FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR Happy 2016 to our friends familiar and new at the Playhouse! What a year 2015 was for us: two Ovation Recommended shows (A Walk in the Woods and Always…Patsy Cline); the incredible demand for tickets for Patsy that had us extend the show three times; our first ever Ovation nominations; the launch of our Advisory Council; the expansion of our Board with many new members joining us; our biggest donation ever from a private Foundation; the success of our Fall Fundraising Appeal for matching donations which will allow us to install air-conditioning in the lobby; and our wonderful collaboration with the Volunteer Center of San Gabriel Valley led by our friend Penny Arroyo. And to top it all off we ended this remarkable year at SMP with the sold-out production of A Christmas Memory. (We are so happy that our Christmas offerings have become a traditional part of the holiday for so many of you. Look for the revival of 2014’s A Little House Christmas next holiday.) We have so much planned for you in 2016. Our mission to present American stories will lead us to some beautiful offerings to end our season this year including one of the greatest musicals ever written (look for an announcement soon), one of the greatest plays - The Glass Menagerie, and our third annual Field Trip Series presentation of E.B. White’s beloved Charlotte’s Web. 2,500 elementary students from seven school districts and SGV private schools will attend weekday matinees. Through the generosity of the Gilb Family Foundation nearly 50% of the expenses are covered but we continue to raise funds to help us underwrite low-cost tickets for the financially-strapped public schools. SMP is at a cross-roads. The time and costs associated with our expanded mission are so much greater than even three years ago, add to that the increased expectations of the digital world and we find ourselves needing a small army to accomplish all we want to achieve. We know we have to shift from an all-volunteer organization to a non-profit with some paid staff to do the extensive work of running and maintaining the Playhouse. The Board will meet in January to craft a strategic plan for the next few years. We will be turning to you, our loyal friends for help to make our plans reality. Promise me you will stop me in the lobby next time you are here so we can get to know each other by name and we can begin an ongoing conversation. There are so many ways SMP is working to enrich your creative journeys. See you in the lobby! Michael Albright, David Gordon, Suzanna Guzman, Robert Lebano, Ann Scott- Putney, John Sparks, Manuela Markarian A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR For those of you who are long-time patrons, you’ll remember the days when SMP produced a lot of thrillers. It has been several years since we last did one and I’m thrilled to be directing one of the best ones ever written - Ira Levin’s Deathtrap! This show was originally slated to open on October 2 but because of the extensions of Always…Patsy Cline we moved it to a January opening. It is my great good fortune that the cast and designers all stayed with me through the various postponements. This is a dynamite cast and we have had a ball figuring out how to murder each other (in the show!) and just how much blood we’ll use! Acting is pretending. All of us in the theater were probably once those kids with hyper-active imaginations who jumped at the chance to play cops & robbers, or prince & princesses, or superheroes! So to get to work on a show where part of the consideration is how to hold a dagger so it looks most menacing, or how to believably die on the hearth rug, or exactly when to scare the audience is just so much fun. And for me it is such a pleasure (and relief) to be back in the rehearsal room. It’s been a year since I last directed and I’ve really missed it. Thrillers are tricky. In many ways they are melodramas – making sure that the plot elements are clear is so important. That makes the direction much more technical than usual. Part of my job is to be the surrogate for the audience – to make sure that they catch everything that they are supposed to. So if actor A says something that causes actor B to react and that reaction is critical to the forward movement of the play – then actor B has to wait a beat for the audience to see the reaction. If they react too soon the audience will miss it. This is a different way of thinking about acting than many actors are used to. Lucky for me that I have had this wonderful cast to work with on this show. I am also indebted to the entire design team and crew who put in countless hours to make sure that we give you an evening of thrills and chills and surprises! Let me know if you enjoyed the return of thrillers to SMP – I have another ingenious one in my hip pocket that I would love to do for you. Running September 27th through October 27th, the play is a rarely-produced work from the acclaimed author of the novels Rosemary’s Baby, The Stepford Wives, and A Kiss Before Dying, as well as Deathtrap, which holds the record for Broadway’s longest running mystery play. Veronica’s Room represents the Bohemian Pillar of Freedom in BoHo’s 2013/2014 Season. THE PLAY “[Ira Levin] is the Swiss watchmaker of the suspense novel… he makes what the rest of us do look like those five-dollar watches you can buy in the discount drugstores.” -Stephen King, Danse Macabre This intimate thriller explores the thin line between fantasy and reality, and the lengths one is willing to go to find absolution. Students Susan and Larry find themselves enticed to an old New England mansion by its elderly caretakers in order to meet Cissie, the sole surviving member of the mansion’s family. They insist that Susan bears a striking resemblance to Cissie’s long-dead sister, Veronica. If Susan will agree to briefly impersonate Veronica, they believe it will comfort the dementia-afflicted Cissie and allow her to die in peace. But what begins as a simple errand of mercy quickly spirals into a nightmare cycle of guilt, sacrifice, and murder.

The play is about Sydney Bruhl, a successful writer experiencing a dry spell who tries to steal a script idea from one of his students. He offers a collaboration, which the young man quickly accepts. Suspense mounts as the plot evolves with cleverness, thrills and laughter with the pieces of the play rearranged and twisted again and again until the startling final moment. According to the book It’s a Hit!, Levin based the role of Sidney partly upon himself. Following his success with No Time for Sergeants, which starred Andy Griffith and ran for two years, Levin found it tough coming up with a follow-up.

  • Ira Levin: an Appreciation by Robert S
december Grand Master named by Ed Gorman No one has more succinctly defined the themes of Bill Pronzini’s work than Marilyn Stasio. In her review of Bill’s novel Blue Lonesome, she wrote: ”There is a sharp sense of place in this moody crime novel, which evokes even the inner landscape of the hero's mind… For all the spareness of its style, this is a rich study of alienated people and the big open spaces where they live.” While not all of Bill’s novels are set in the wide open spaces, all of them show the impact of environment on character. In Bill’s most famous novels, The Nameless Detective books, we see Nameless grow and change as his city of San Francisco grows and changes. I know of no other series where we see a man actually go through so many different phases in his life. Friends die, lovers fade, jobs change, his attitude about himself and the world evolve constantly. The Nameless of 1971’s The Snatch is a far different man than the Nameless of 2007’s Savages. Another remarkable aspect of the Nameless books is that they’ve stayed true to their original blue-collar origins. Nameless may delve into the worlds of the rich and prominent from time to time, but he remains a working class man not given to glitz or glamour. He speaks for people that much of American fiction seems to have lost interest in. But Bill’s career has not been limited to series fiction. In his suspense novels, from the extraordinary Snowbound to the recent masterwork The Crimes of Jordan Wise, Bill has demonstrated that suspense can be both entertaining and thought-provoking at the same time.

The American Century Theater Presents Ira Levin’s Dr Cook’s Garden Audience Guide 2 September 9–October 4, 2008 Edited by Jack Marshall About The American Century Theater The American Century Theater was founded in 1994. We are a professional company dedicated to presenting great, important, and neglected American plays of the Twentieth Century… what Henry Luce called “the American Century.” The company’s mission is one of rediscovery, enlightenment, and perspective, not nostalgia or preservation. Americans must not lose the extraordinary vision and wisdom of past playwrights, nor can we afford to surrender our moorings to our shared cultural heritage. Our mission is also driven by a conviction that communities need theater, and theater needs audiences. To those ends, this company is committed to producing plays that challenge and move all Americans, of all ages, origins and points of view. In particular, we strive to create theatrical experiences that entire families can watch, enjoy, and discuss long afterward. 3 These study guides are part of our effort to enhance the appreciation of these works, so rich in history, content, and grist for debate. (Minneapolis; February 25, 2013) — The Jungle Theater continues its 2013 season with DEATHTRAP, Ira Levin’s 1978 Tony-nominated play, which holds the record for the longest running comedy-thriller on Broadway. Designed and directed by Artistic Director Bain Boehlke, this is the first time the theater has presented this ingeniously constructed play that pairs gasp-inducing thrills with abundant laughter. Steve Hendrickson stars as Sidney Bruhl, with Cheryl Willis as Myra Bruhl and Michael Booth as Clifford Anderson, both of whom were in the Jungle’s 2012 Dial M for Murder, another mystery masterpiece. The production also features Jungle favorites Claudia Wilkens (Helga ten Dorp) and Terry Hempleman (Porter Milgrim). Deathtrap opens at the Jungle March 29 and runs through May 19, 2013. In Deathtrap, Sidney Bruhl, an accomplished writer, has had a series of box office flops and is having trouble writing his next big hit. When he reads a play by Clifford Anderson, a younger writer, he decides to steal the script and kill him. Deathtrap ran for four years on Broadway with over 1,800 performances. Thirty-five years after its release, it is still being performed in theaters around the world. With Boehlke’s reputation for exquisite design, brilliant casting and razor-sharp direction, the Jungle’s production will grab even those who are familiar with the plot’s clever twists and turns.

Act I Scene 1: An afternoon in October Scene 2: That evening Scene 3: Two hours later Fifteen-minute Intermission Act II Scene 1: Two weeks later Scene 2: A week later Scene 3: A week later Director’s Notes Deathtrap became one of my favorite movies when I saw it 20 years ago. I was not aware that it had been a Broadway play, and I would never have dreamed that I would have the opportunity to direct such a wonderful story. Deathtrap, the play, is certainly the most exciting Reno Little Theater play that I’ve worked on and is, I suspect, the most exciting RLT play since 1983, when Reno Little Theater presented Deathtrap the first time. Of course, I might be a little biased. Besides having the good fortune to direct Deathtrap, I am delighted to be working with such a wonderful cast and crew. Without their competence, it would be just another play. I hope that you enjoy watching the show as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you. I have found working with everyone associated with Reno Little Theater to be enjoyable, rewarding, and educational.

Veronica’s Room The play is set in a room in a house about an hour’s drive from Boston. The time in an evening in spring. Act One Susan Fifteen Minute Intermission Act Two Veronica Director’s Notes I have been fortunate to direct two wonderful thrillers by Ira Levin; I am attracted to thrillers, with their action and intrigue, and I have always enjoyed orchestrating surprises. With many thrillers, unlike conventional mysteries, it is impossible, unless one is psychic, to predict what will happen next. Ira Levin is particularly adept at lulling audiences into thinking that all is well, only to hit them hard in the next act. My good fortune has been extended to working with yet another wonderful, talented cast and crew. Everyone worked incredibly hard to make this play first class, surprises and all. Without them, and without support from a lot of other Reno Little Theater people, and without the support of our audiences for the past 70 years, this performance would not have been possible.
