Anat Zanger Tel Aviv, December Introduction The traditional history of culture takes into consideration for each chrono- logical section only “new” texts, texts created by the given age. But in the real existence of culture, texts transmitted by the given cultural tradition or introduced from outside always function side by side with new texts. (Juri Lotman, ) Cinema as a social institution knows what Scheherazade seems to have known all along: to narrate is to triumph over death. Hence, in an ongoing ceremony that occurs in the darkness of the movie theater (and lasts, ultimately, more than nights), society constantly delivers its encoded messages. The constant re- petition of the same tale keeps it alive in social memory, continually transmit- ting its meaning and relevance. It is in this context that I suggest that the pre- sence of repetitive chains of remakes can be identified as “hidden streams” (Bazin’s term, ) in the imaginary archive of the cinema. The tendency of cinema to produce a “remake” that retells a previously suc- cessful story has to be accounted for in the light of the medium’s unique capa- city for reproduction. Given the fact that recorded versions already exist, what is the purpose of re-addressing and re-articulating the same story time and again? The aim of this book is to trace the cultural and aesthetic instrumentalities of the chains of remakes and to locate the remake as part of the cinematic insti- tution that has shaped and reshaped collective imagination through the sites of its pleasures, fears and traumas. The relationship between original and version encapsulates the dialectic of repetition, the dialectic between old and new, before and after, desire and fulfill- ment. Using the tales of Psycho, Carmen and Joan of Arc as its navigators, Film Remakes as Ritual and Disguise explores the phenomenon of multi-versions as one that illuminates the preferences and politics of the cinematic apparatus through its choices of repetition and differentiation. One of the most popular series that the cinema has produced stems from Alfred Hitchcock’s film Psycho (). Cinema (and culture) embraced Psycho and endowed it with a “cult” status, complete with quotations, allusions, ho- mages, and direct and indirect transformations. Three sequels have so far been made – by Richard Franklin (), Anthony Perkins (), and Mick Garris (). Homage was paid to Psycho with pastiches like Tobe Hooper’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre (), John Carpenter’s Halloween () and Brian de 10 Film Remakes as Ritual and Disguise Palma’s Dressed to Kill (). To that one might add Douglas Gordon’s vi- deo installation Hour Psycho () and the installation at the Hitchcock ex- hibition at the Pompidou, Paris (). But it is Gus Van Sant’s remake and declared homage to Psycho that overtly discusses the question of cinematic re- petitions. I will be using Psycho to trace the dynamics of repetitions within the framework of the horror genre which operates in and vis-à-vis mainstream cine- matic conventions. Over fifty cinematic versions of the Carmen story and almost forty of the Joan of Arc story have been produced to date. There are fewer remakes of (or sequels to) such works as Anna Karenina, The Three Musketeers, The Decameron, Don Quix- ote, Faust, the Cleopatra story or any of Shakespeare’s plays. This previously unnoticed “statistic” is clearly charged with meaning: both the Carmen and the Joan stories deal with exceptional female heroines who challenge social conven- tions and die as a result.

RUN LOLA RUN followed in 1998, with Franka Potente and Moritz Bleibtreu finding themselves as the protagonists in a huge international success. The film won numerous awards, including the Deutscher Filmpreis in Gold for best directing. Next came THE PRINCESS AND THE WARRIOR (2000), also with Frank Potente, followed by Tykwer’s fist English language production HEAVEN (2002), which is based on a screenplay by the Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski and stars Cate Blanchett and Giovanni Ribisi.

This country has seen in Hollywood an effective structure for approaching the audience. With the purpose of approaching national and international audiences, Meximo has not only adopted some of Hollywood cinematographic genres, but it has also combined them with Mexican genres such as “Cabaretera” in order to reflect its social context and national identity. The Melodrama and the Film Noir were two of the Hollywood genres which exercised a stronger influence on the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema. Influence of these genres is specifically evident in style and narrative of the film Aventurera (1949). This film shows the links between Hollywood and Mexican cinema, displaying how some Hollywood conventions were translated and reformed in order to create its own Mexican Cinema. Most countries intending to create their own cinema have to face Hollywood influence. This industry has always been seen as a leading industry in technology, innovation, and economic capacity, and as the Nemesis of local cinema. This case study on Aventurera shows that Mexican cinema reached progress until exceeding conventions of cinematographic genres taken from Hollywood, creating stories which went beyond the local interest. In “Opera and the Lease of Voice,” a chapter of A Pitch of Philosophy (1994),1 as in a relatively recent essay entitled “Opera in (and as) Film” (2005),2 Cavell develops a compelling argument about the link between these two art forms. According to him, opera and film represent two historically distant attempts to come to terms with the same “cultural trauma,” one he characterizes as “having to do with a crisis of expres- sion, a sense that language as such, reason as such, can no longer be assured of its rela- tion to a world apart from me or to the reality of the passions within me.”3 Such a crisis has a name: it is called skepticism. It comes as no surprise to those familiar with Cavell’s work, namely with The Claim of Reason (1979), and his books on cinema — The World Viewed (1971), Pur- suits of Happiness (1981), Contesting Tears (1996), and Cities of Words (2005) — that skepticism and the manifold efforts to overcome it are among the major Leitmotive of Cavell’s thought.4 Likewise, it is well known fact that for him Shakespeare’s (tragic) theatre and Descartes’s (solipsistic) philosophy were crucial manifestations of — and, concomitantly, attempts to appease — the increasingly generalized anxiety, which came of age around the transition between the sixteenth and the seventeenth centuries, !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1. Films from all around the world have been shot in Scotland. A: I wanted to present a group of children on whom absolute values are being imposed. What I was trying to say was that if someone adopts an absolute principle, when it becomes absolute then it becomes inhuman. The original idea was a children’s choir, who want to make absolute principles concrete, and those who do not live up to them. Of course, this is also a period piece: we looked at photos of the period before World War I to determine costumes, sets, even haircuts. I wanted to describe the atmosphere of the eve of world war. There are countless films that deal with the Nazi period, but not the pre-period and pre-conditions, which is why I wanted to make this film.

Paragraph Synopsis A Moment in Time, a new film by Oscar-winner Ruby Yang, is a one-hour documentary about the experience of the Chinese in America through the films they loved -- from Cantonese opera to Westerns. It harkens back to a time when six movie theaters in San Francisco’s Chinatown crystallized the memories, the beliefs, the sorrows and aspirations of Chinese immigrant families. Chinese movies reduced an older generation to tears. They challenged the young to find out how they could be American and Chinese at the same time. The principal speakers in A Moment in Time grew up here: Irene Dea Collier, Jimmie Lee, Chuck Gee, Cecilia Wong, Amy Chung, Norman Fong. As children they associated Chinese movies (and the Chinese language) with their parents’ alien, backward world. Eventually they found their own reasons to appreciate Chinese film.
