Chairman’s Report

Season 2016/17 was my first year appointed as the Chairperson of the WDCA Board. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Nick Frampton, the previous Chair, for the manner in which the Association has moved with the times and into the modern era under his watch. This is very evident when I see neighbouring Associations watching us carefully and seeking us out for advice on how we are doing business, so they can improve their lot.

Cricket-wise, the 2016/17 was one of the most even cricket seasons in the history of the Association. The new playing format of T20 fixtures, one day and two day fixtures played an important part in that. With the match points accumulated throughout the season adding to the final ladder, this resulted in unpredictable changes right to the last round. Thanks to the Clubs and club members who provided their valuable input into a changed playing schedule. This information provided the Board with the tools to introduce a revitalised competition which was fair to all Clubs and gave Clubs more opportunities to achieve at the various game formats. It is the intention of the Board to continue into the near future with these formats with minor adjustments to be considered as become necessary.

The WDCA continues to be one of the larger Cricket Associations in the Country Victoria with our senior and junior numbers holding strongly and remain a key stakeholder in the Western Waves Region. A special highlight this season for the WDCA was the Senior Country Week teams outstanding performance at Melbourne Country Week in February. Playing in the Provincial grade, the WDCA acquitted itself extremely well playing off in the Grand Final on the Friday being narrowly beaten by provincial Geelong. Congratulations to all the playing team members and the management and support group led by Ray Drew and Glenn Kelson for their efforts, achievement and commitment to representative cricket.

At local level, congratulations go to the format Champions for the season 2016/17; One Day Cricket Premiers - Woodford Cricket Club, T20 Cricket Premiers - Russells Creek Cricket Club, Two Day Cricket Premiers and Season Champions - Woodford Cricket Club.

Congratulation also to John Houston (Woodford Cricket Club) and Don Herbert (Allansford Cricket Club) for their achievement of Life Membership of the WDCA this season. Well deserved.

Once again, the Sungold T20 Competition on Australia Day was an outstanding success. I thank Ross McKean and Sungold Milk, our major sponsor, for their promotion and support and their continued close working relationship with the WDCA in regard this competition and cricket in general in the area.

Special Mention to all member Clubs who supported the WDCA in the Warrnambool Under 17 Country Week Competition and the supply of Finals grounds. The Club curators once again came to the fore with their outstanding efforts in their cricket preparation work for this carnival and throughout the entire season. The Reid Oval was very well presented for the Grand Final by the Nestles Cricket Club and the Warrnambool City Council ground staff and the showpiece event culminated in the outstanding game of cricket that was played on the grand final weekend between Woodford and Russells Creek Cricket Clubs. I would like to sincerely thank our loyal sponsors and supporters, Sungold Milk, Kookaburra Sports, The Standard Newspaper, 3YB Radio, Subway Restaurants, National Tiles, South West Sport, and All Fresh Foods. Their valued commitment to Cricket in the WDCA is very much appreciated and has made an immense impact on the promotion of cricket in the South West.

Finally, I believe we currently have a very well balanced and experienced Board, comprising of Michael Harrison (General Manager), Bruce Membrey (Senior Vice President) and Tony Brown

(Junior Vice President), Andrew Sloane, Ray Drew and Nick Frampton. A special thanks also goes to Danny Rook, Terry O’Keefe and Stephanie Townsend who became Board members during the season. Their special expertise has been invaluable. All members have worked extremely hard towards our aim of us being a totally professional body to administer the game in the best interests of all clubs and cricket in this area in general. A special mention also, to Tony Brown who took on the important role of Treasurer when daughter Angela moved away from the local area during the season.

It has been a pleasure and privilege to lead this team. I thank you all very much for your support and co-operation throughout the season and look forward to taking the Association to greater heights in the future.

Gordon McLeod WDCA Chairperson

General Manager’s Report

Firstly I wish to thank the Board for allowing me the opportunity to be a part of the administration team of the Association once again. I would to thank Board, Member Clubs, Umpires and cricket lovers for their support over the past twelve months.

Many thanks to all our wonderful sponsors and your support is much appreciated as I would like thank Sungold Milk, Kookaburra, National Tiles, Ace Radio 3YB and All Fresh. Thanks once again to our very valuable sponsors and I trust that we will all support these sponsors as they have supported us.

Our Representative Teams performed very well again this season and represented the WDCA in the manner we all expect. Our Junior teams performed well with Warrnambool Gold winning the Under 15s at Horsham against Colac, Warrnambool Blue winning the Under 13’s over Warrnambool Gold at Portland along with the Under 17s, Warrnambool defeating Colac in Division 1 competition, with Colac winning Division 2 over Warrnambool. At the Festival of Cricket, saw our over forties participate in a changing format.

Melbourne Country Week side performed well in Provincial, making the final and only just falling short of the well fancied Geelong side. It was a fantastic effort by all concerned on and off the field which saw our team play some very hard fought and good cricket over the week.

Many thanks you to all those people who gave their time and effort to make sure our representative teams were successful; coaches, selectors, managers, scorers, bus drivers and the players who contributed to enjoy and play good cricket.

Sungold Twenty20 continues to grow and is one of the best Twenty20 competitions in country Victoria. Congratulations to the Russells Creek Cricket Club for representing the WDCA and being successful. Thank you to our Major Sponsor in Sungold Milk and all of our other sponsors - Clinton

Baulch Isuzu, Visy and Warrnambool City Council. Thank you also to Allansford, Dennington and West Warrnambool Cricket Clubs for hosting matches on behalf of the Sungold committee.

Finals last season proved to be close hard fought games with good crowds attending all finals. Congratulations to our Premier Clubs: Sungold Division1 – Woodford Cricket Club Kookaburra Division 2 – Russells Creek Cricket Club The Standard Division 3 – Nirranda Cricket Club Sungold Under 17 – Woodford Maroon Cricket Club Under 15 – East Warrnambool Cricket Club Under 13 – Koroit Cricket Club Girls Under 16 - Woodford Blue Cricket Club

Congratulations to all award winners in all grades of cricket in season 2016-17

I would also like to thank Charlie Rivett and the Umpires for another good season of umpiring.

I would also to thank the Board for their support and being able to look into the future which has seen changes to senior cricket, umpiring, policies and will focus of improving cricket for those who play, administrate or just love watching our great game

Finance Report

Season 2016/2017 has been a strong year for the WDCA both on and off the field. Of particular note is the development of the WDCA Girls Renegades competition, and our representative teams, such as that of the Melbourne Country Week squad who played off in the Final in Provincial Grade. These opportunities come at significant cost to players and their families, and the Association.

The WDCA firmly believes in advancing the interests of WDCA cricket through these opportunities, however there is a delicate balance undertaken to keep cricket affordable in an increasingly expensive world. Hence, the WDCA budgets for a breakeven financial result each year.

At the time of writing this report, the Warrnambool and District Cricket Association has seen a slight loss over the past financial year in the vicinity of $1800. However, there are several factors contributing to this such as Sungold’s generous sponsorship and National Tiles’ Club Championship sponsorship scheduled to be paid in the 2017/2018 financial year, and a lower total rebate amount from Kookaburra for Sungold cricket balls (with 2015/2016 stock being used). Furthermore, honorariums from both 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 were paid in the same financial year. Giving consideration to these factors, the WDCA has produced an outstanding result.

The WDCA does not expect a significant shift in 2017/2018, however it should be noted that the prospect of iPad purchases for clubs has been discussed. The specifics are to be finalised, however the core motivation for this is to transition to online scoring which will vastly improve the accuracy of record keeping, and reduce the time demands on volunteers.

The WDCA would like to thank all its wonderful sponsors such as Sungold, Kookaburra, The Standard, 3YB, All Fresh, Subway, National Tiles, Youngs Chartered Accountants, Shaun Brown, The Coffee Guy and South West Sport. This has been further complimented by funding for Girls Cricket through Cricket Australia, of which we look forward to seeing be further developed and embraced by the region.

Thank you to Young & Associates for your support of the WDCA through the provision of Xero online. Over the past twelve months, the WDCA has transitioned to this software with Angela and Tony Brown both sharing the Treasurer’s role throughout the year, and doing a remarkable job of getting up to speed. Thank you to you both.

Well done to all clubs in 2016/2017 and best of luck for the oncoming season.

Andrew Sloane Director of Finance

Melbourne Country Week Report

Our Warrnambool squad travelled to Melbourne on the Sunday afternoon, booking into accommodation at the Quest Apartments in Flemington, with the high hopes of having a competitive week at Melbourne Country Week.

The squad including 4 debutants within the team of Nathan Murphy (c), Nick Butters (vc), Cam Williams (vc), Hank Schlaghecke, Mark Murphy, Tom Batten, Ben Threlfall, Jim Elford, Kyle Humphrys, Jason Mungean, Brett Eldridge, Brody Couch, Kory Howlett and Tyler Fowler. Our team had to encounter a difficult draw with games against Bendigo, Mornington Peninsula, Traralgon & Ballarat ahead throughout the week.

A light training run on Sunday night set the scene for the week ahead with all the guys keen and enthusiastic about the session and week ahead.

Day 1 Bendigo vs Warrnambool at Hoppers Crossing

Bendigo 6/220 def by Warrnambool 7/234 C Williams 65, T Batten 47*, T Fowler 3/39

Our Warrnambool team arrived at Hoppers Crossing ready for the game early- 3 debutants in Jim Elford, Kory Howlett and Tyler Fowler set themselves for their debut games at MCW. Bendigo batted first and set a tough total of 6/220 off their 50 overs. The game was always going to be tight, with

Warrnambool losing Brett Eldridge to an injured arm after our fielding efforts, causing the need to reshuffle our batting order. Cam Williams was the star with the bat making 65 from the opening position, he was ably assisted by Tom Batten with a fine 47no. The pick of our bowlers was Tyler Fowler who bowled good lines for the day. An excellent start for the week however the loss of Eldridge to our batting stakes made life a little more difficult for the days ahead for both our selectors and team structures.

Day 2 Mornington Peninsula vs Warrnambool at Frankston

Warrnambool 146 def by Mornington Peninsula 8/215 C Williams 47, B Threlfall 25, H Schlaghecke 2/24

After a late trip back from Hoppers Crossing the evening before due to our injury concerns- it was an early start for the trip to Frankston the next morning. The team was in good spirits as we took in the many attractions of inner Melbourne under the bus driving skills of Nathan Hoy. Warrnambool batted first in good conditions however tight bowling and excellent fielding, Warrnambool was restricted to a score of 146. Mornington produced with the bat and victory was handed to Mornington at their home ground. Not a great day for Warrnambool as we were very flat after a considerable bus trip however a very good learning experience taken on board by our players on how well drilled Mornington were and tactically well prepared they were for our game style.

Day 3 Warrnambool vs Traralgon at Brunswick

Traralgon 134 defeated by Warrnambool 8/303. B Threlfall 3/12, H Schlaghecke 2/21, C Williams 83, M Murphy 73

Warrnambool came out with all guns blazing on our 3rd game for the week after a disappointing previous day. Traralgon was skittled for 134 on a reasonably good wicket. Best of the bowlers were Ben Threlfall with 3/12 and Hank Schlaghecke 2/21. Fielding was excellent with Warrnambool on the top of their game. With our 3rd rescheduled venue for the week- the boys produced our best batting performance for the tour. Cam Williams made a punishing 83 and Mark Murphy produced an excellent performance with a solid 73. This game saw Warrnambool come back into contention for a place in the final with the two ladder leaders to play each other on Thursday. A special mention to Brodie Couch in making his debut for the Warrnambool team.

Day 4 Warrnambool vs Ballarat at Dandenong.

Ballarat 192 & 6/36 defeated by Warrnambool 226 C Williams 87, T Batten 63 J Elford 4/13, K Howlett 3/36. 2nd Innings: K Humphrys 3/19

WDCA arrived at Dandenong after another long trek to the match with the Warrnambool side in high spirits. Warrnambool won the toss and Ballarat batted first on a damp wicket setting a competitive total of 192. Pick of our bowlers was Jim Elford taking a fine 4/13 and Kory Howlett taking 3/36. Warrnambool in reply led by Cam Williams with the bat with a magnificent 87, ably assisted by Tom Batten with a fine 63 took the points in the game. With time left for second innings points, Ballarat batted for a second time. With a finals position up for grabs and Warrnambool searching for additional

bonus points, WDCA produced an excellent effort in acquiring 6/36 in the second innings securing a position in the Grand Final on Friday. Kyle Humphrys was the pick of the bowlers in the 2nd innings taking 3/19.

Grand Final Geelong vs Warrnambool at the Albert Cricket Ground

Geelong 8/188 defeated Warrnambool 7/181 H Schlaghecke 4/24, T Fowler 2/24, K Humphrys 46, B Threlfall 39

Warrnambool arrived at the game early for a good warm up prior to proceedings. Geelong batted first making a well compiled 8/188. Fielding was sharp and our bowling was well led by Hank Schlaghecke producing a fine 4/24 and Tyler Fowler an excellent 2/24. Warrnambool got off to a flier with Cam Williams (27) and Nick Butters (27) taking early control of the game. Geelong then put the clamps on our bats with their slow bowlers producing very tight overs restricting our run rate. Warrnambool struggled to 7/181 with fields set around the boundary restricting our ability to get the runs required to win. Top scores for the day were Kyle Humphrys 46 and Ben Threlfall 39. Obviously we can learn from this experience and gain confidence that we are not far away from taking home a Provincial final.

Overall, I am very proud of all our teams’ efforts throughout the week and they deserve hearty congratulations for their efforts. Congratulations to Nathan Murphy who led the team with pride and inspiration throughout the week as of the WDCA team. Special mentions go to Cam Williams on a fantastic week with both bat and gloves, Hank Schlaghecke and Jim Elford with the ball. Congratulations to Tom Batten and Ben Threlfall on their efforts throughout the campaign. I congratulate Cam Williams on achieving 'Player of the Week' for the Warrnambool team.

I thank in particular the support staff in Nathan Hoy (as Bus Driver), Michael Harrison in his assistance with our score information, Locky Eccles for his continued support as Masseuse and not forget the hard work of Ray Drew as Coach; all your support, input and encouragement throughout the week was invaluable to the team. I thank the association for their continued support in particular Michael Harrison for organising such excellent accommodation.

I believe if we continue in the direction that we are taking, future success at Melbourne Country Week with not be far away in Provincial. I encourage all cricketers within the Association, to continue to make themselves available to support future campaigns with the aim of getting Warrnambool cricket back to number 1 in the Provincial grade. It was terrific to see 30 odd cricketers take part in try outs for the squad this year and the strong comradery that existed within that entire squad.

Thank you all for your support!

Junior Cricket Annual Report

The 2016/17 WDCA Junior Cricket season was once again a very successful one with clubs junior team numbers holding up strongly and the grade levels remaining very competitive. In the Under 17’s we increased to a ten team competition which included a team from the Grassmere Cricket Association. The availability of player in this age group from other neighbouring Associations has enabled our Under 17 numbers to prosper and the competition to become stronger. It is pleasing to see all Clubs participating in the lower junior age levels where in the under 15’s there were 12 teams, Under 13’s- 14 teams and Under 11’s-16 teams. The continued growth in junior numbers does auger well for the future of all Member Clubs. The Under 11 level competition continues to thrive and expand and it is encouraging to see Clubs take up the opportunity to enter two teams to provide more chances for our youngsters to play cricket under the exciting modified rules and in a non-competitive spirit. Thanks to the Russells Creek Cricket Club for hosting this season’s finals Under 11 gala day. Congratulations also to the two Under 11 teams, Merrivale Tigers and Port Fairy Pirates for their excellent season performances.

The Playing Format of exposing teams to T20 games, Two day matches and for Under 17’s and Under 15’s to experience turf play continued this season. During the season Inter Association matches were also played against Hamilton and Mt Gambier Cricket Associations from Under 17 to Under 14 age levels. It is noteworthy that selection in these teams is most sought after and as well it is seen to give players the opportunity to compete at a higher level of cricket and test their skills against other talented players Associations.

Again, this season the WDCA provided three Under 17 teams in the Warrnambool Country Week, two at Under 15 level at Horsham and two at the Under 13 Portland Country Week. Once again we are proud of our Country Week record for this season being winners at Under 13 Portland Country Week (Warrnambool Blue) Under 15 Horsham Country Week (Warrnambool Gold).

At the Subway Under 17 Colts Country Week the Warrnambool Gold team led by Coach Cory Couch (Nirranda) were premiers and champions after decisively defeating a Colac And District Association team. The Warrnambool Blue Team in Division 1 and the Warrnambool Division 2 team acquitted themselves well but were unable to reach the heights required to play finals. There were three outstanding player highlights at Country Week. Wil Fleming (Merrivale) 104, Tom Jackson (Woodford) 108 and Jordan Rundle (Nirranda) 6/10 in a T20 Match. Congratulations too to Bailey Jenkinson (Nestles) for winning the player of the week in Horsham.

The WDCA thanks the commitment of Subway for supporting our Under 17 Country Week Competition and appreciates the efforts of Anton Lucas in this regard.

Junior Development Program

The WDCA Junior Development Program continues to show the benefits of advanced coaching for the players who achieve selection into the program. Thirty five WDCA junior players were involved in the program this season. It was very clear that many of them showed immense improvement under the coaching expertise of Andrew Thomson, Jason Mungean, and Dan Schuppan and other senior club players who assisted in the program from time to time. A job very well done by the coaches and very much appreciated by the players, parents and the WDCA Board members. Again the Clubs are no

doubt the beneficiaries and with each Club now required to have Level 1 qualified junior coaches (Community Coaches) this coaching and training can be enhanced further at Club Level.

The 2017/18 program will commence on Sunday 30th July, 2017 at Action Sportz Indoor Cricket Facility. This season there are 11 WDCA Junior players who have been selected in the initial Western Waves squad at Under 14 level and 24 other players who have been chosen to participate.

Girls Cricket

The inaugural Warrnambool Renegades Girls Cricket Competition was borne during season 2016/17. With Sponsorship available from Cricket Australia and the enthusiasm of the WDCA Clubs, ten girls teams entered formal competitions at Under 13 and Under 16 Levels.

These matches were played on Wednesday nights after school. Over 100 girls played games over a six week period. All girls showed incredible improvement as the season progressed. The highlight of the season was the Final play off between Woodford Blue and Nestles who played as a curtain raiser to the Sungold Cup on Australia Day at Allansford. Woodford was victorious, being a close winner (99 runs to 90). The Clubs involved in the girls competition were Woodford (2 Teams,) Nestles, Brierly Christchurch, Nirranda, Grassmere, Russells Creek, East Warrnambool YCW, Koroit (2 Teams). There was very positive feedback received from the participants at the de-brief meeting. It is encouraging to know that other Clubs will enter teams in the girl’s competition in season 2017/18.

I would like to say thanks to Stephanie Townsend for taking on the role of Girls Cricket Ambassador. Her presence and encouragement and well credentialed coaching skills was invaluable to the teams. Also a big thank you to Andrew Sloane for his commitment and encouragement to ensure the girls competition became a reality. To both people a job extremely well done.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the dedicated work and commitment of the Junior Committee, Daryl Gunther (Secretary), Danny Rook (Rules/Country Week involvement) Andrew Thomson and Jason Mungean (JDP Coaching) , Richard Hodgens (Junior Registrar) and members of the Junior Executive who have met as required and assisted me in the smooth operations of Junior Cricket. Thanks also to the Club Junior Delegates who have been most co-operative and who as well have assisted greatly in the general administration of Junior Cricket. The WDCA is truly very conscious of the time and effort and hard work that Club volunteers put in to managing teams.

I also thank my fellow Country Week administrators, Peter Allan, Keith Ellerton, Daryl Gunther, Michael Harrison, Danny Rook, Terry O’Keefe and Bill Masterson for their efforts in ensuring that this competition maintains its high reputation in the Western Waves calendar.

We are the envy of many Cricket Associations in the Western Waves Region. We have strived to be innovative to provide our junior players the best opportunities we can, with the strongest local competitions to play in and the exposure to quality coaching to prepare them to further their endeavours in cricket.

With changes to junior cricket structures ahead, the WDCA must keep abreast of these to ensure that the opportunities to play are never diminished.

Having been the Director of Junior Cricket for over twelve years now I believe it is time for a new face to appear to take over this role. During this season I am hoping that a successor can be encouraged to fulfil this very rewarding responsibility.
