PROFESSIONAL APPOINTMENTS

Executive Director of The Brubeck Institute/ Associate Professor of Music University of The Pacific, 2011-Present Created: • Partnerships for presenting and education with organizations including The United Nations,The Smithsonian, Jazz at Lincoln Center, The Open World leadership Center and others. • Educational outreach programming with The Stockton Unified School District, The City of Stockton, The Downtown Stockton Alliance and others featuring multiple national partners and artists. • Two innovative (NASM approved) accelerated undergraduate programs for Jazz Studies Major including the Brubeck Fellowship Program and The Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Studies (Honors)/Brubeck Track. • Take-Five Jazz Club University/Community Partnership as a platform for local, regional and national artists to perform and as a tool for education outreach. • New rehearsal facility for Brubeck Fellows, established as a high definition video facility for virtual master-class interactions with distinguished faculty in remote locations. Leading artist/educators Stefon Harris and Edward Simon are current artists in residence. • Transformed vision, staff and resources for the five programs at The Brubeck Institute, including The Brubeck Collection (oversaw program expansion to externalize the Archive), The Brubeck Fellowship Program (honed and focused pedagogical content), The Summer Jazz Colony (expanded to include International students and faculty), The Brubeck Festival (now a major regional event), The Outreach Program (over 10,000 students reached from 2012-2014). • Managed Institute with multiple high level stakeholders including the Brubeck Family during a time of great transition as Dave and Iola Brubeck passed away in 2012 and 2013 respectively. Teaching duties are divided between the jazz students and the music industry students with some overlap. The jazz students are more performance oriented, demanding consistent attention throughout a four-year course of study. I teach the industry students upon their arrival as first-year students, and then supervise their final 4th-year work as they move into internships and beyond.

At Eastern Illinois University duties were concentrated on jazz pedagogy from individual lessons, first year to graduate level, small groups and big band. The history course (MUS 2557G) accommodates 150 students many of whom are non-majors. Aural training is part of the traditional theory core. Under my watch, several undergraduate students passed successfully into the masters program and are currently completing doctoral work at the University of Illinois.
