I first heard the soundtrack for "Honk!" in 2001 when Cabrillo Stage in Santa Cruz was holding auditions for the show. Of course I knew the story of the "Ugly Duckling", or at least I thought I did, but after listening to the music from this show, I fell in love with the story and its message allover again. I was fortunate enough to be cast in that production, and had one of the best show experiences I've ever had. I hoped that someday I would be able to direct/choreograph this show for WVLO, as I feel it is a show that is just made for community theater, both the people that perform/work on the show itself, and the wonderful theater patrons who come to see our performances.

A family-friendly show with a positive message-now we don't see that much anymore, do we? "Honk!" makes its presence felt with the wonderful, hummable tunes, and more so with the wonderful cast of characters brought to life. I am fortunate to have such a fabulous cast to work with-each of them has been a joy, and all bring such a wonderful touch to each character they play. (See if you can count how many animals we have in this showl)

I would like to challenge you to really listen to the lyrics in this show-es- pecially in the songs "Different" and "Warts and All". Jeff (our Ugly) and I were talking about how the songwriters get their message across, and these two songs really epitomize what they are trying to say. For example, in "Different", Ugly sings "Different isn't spiteful, different isn't wrong, so why is it so hard to get along?" And "Warts and All" is pretty much self explanatory!

So sit back, enjoy this wonderful show, and please tell your family and friends (and their friends) to join us in a wonderful fairy tale told with a new twist! -Geri CarlsonSauls COMING TO THIS THEATER .., I- I SDG: "Thoroughly Modern Millie"-May/June 2007 I I Tickets (408) 266-4734 I I WVLO: "Wonderful Town"-June/July 2007 I I Tickets (408) 268-3777 I , J ...... 2 _------_ CAST OF CHARACTERS (In Order of Appearance) Steve Anthony Bob/Jay Bird Anastasiya Bauswell Waddles/C9llage Solo Doug Brook Greylag/Father Swan Kristin Brownstone Queenie Molly Carter Lowbutt Jeff Clarke Ugly Ben D'Angelo Rooster/Barnacles Carolyn Dil.oreto Billie, a duckling Emmy Farese Beaky, a duckling Molly Gazay Snowy/Floor Manager Wendy Gregg Spikey Michael Johnson Drake Kimberly Kay Henrietta Cliff Mills Turkey/Blizzard Duet Marissa Parkhurst Downy, a duckling Alisha Patterson Penny Karyn Rondeau Maureen Jennifer Smith Squeaky/Pinkfoot Jay Steele Bullfrog Laura Toby Dot Justin Torres Cat Katya Vigil Fanny/Blizzard Duet Alexandra Vigil. IN MEMORIAM We dedicate this production to the memory of these loyal and special supporters. B.J. Publicover-She was one of our first leading ladies with West Valley Light Opera. Her portrayal of Widow Corney in our very first production of "Oliver" in 1965 won her many accolades and set the stage for her delightful characterizations in several of this organization's early musicals. B.J. was a member of The Overtures', the Association's traveling troupe, for over 25 years and most recently was one of the soloists with the Garden City Chorus. To her four sons and their families, we offer our heartfelt sympathy for their loss. Gene Collinge-We lost a dedicated volunteer and staunch supporter in January in this wonderful gentlemen who helped "behind the scenes". For more than 30 years, he was there to help the tech crew move into and out of the theater, even after he moved out of the Bay Area. He was with the Tech Directors to assist with rigging the roll drops and to provide the extra hands to assemble stairs, platforms, and set pieces. He will truly be missed. Our deepest sympathy to his loving wife, Elizabeth. Shirley Thannisch- This devoted stage mother to one of our very talented performers, Steve Thannisch, was also one of our regular subscribers and supporters for many years. We will miss her infectious smile and cheery attitude. We extend our deepest condolences to Steve and his family.

A home-run hit on Broadway, the musical won 8 , including Best Musical and boasts a clever book and rousing score. Lots of major baseball league laughs and splendid entertainment for all ages. "Grease" June/July 2008 Book Music & Lyrics by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey Appearing in this theatre for the first time is this rollicking musical comedy, "Grease", which opened in 1972 and became one of Broadway's longest-running musicals, with Barry Bostwick, Richard Gere and Patrick Swayze sharing the leading role. It takes a nostalgic look at growing up in the ultra-cool 50's, when slicked-back hair, beehive hairdos, tight pedal pushers, bobby sox, pajama parties, and drive-in movies were the rage. In 1978 Paramount Pictures released its film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton- John and it became one of the highest-grossing movie musicals of all time. A recent realiryTV show, searching for talent for a Broadway revival, has brought more attention to this era and this production which made Broadway history with its 8-year run. "Hairspray" is the most recent musical to bring the same look and sound of the 50's. Popular songs include "Summer Nights", "Greased Lightnin" and "We Go Together". 13 WHO'S WHO ON OUR STAFF

Elizabeth Dale (Producer) Our versatile and energetic Vice President for the past 19 years introduces you to another new and different musical comedy. Last season she produced the delightful Jerry Herman's "Marne" and now brings you a new British musical comedy that won the Laurence Olivier Award in London. She has been involved with so many productions either t as Producer, SM, ASM, stage crew or all around assistant, they are just too numerous to mention. Elizabeth gives her husband, Les, and daughter, Julie, the credit for getting her involved in community theater. And every once in awhile, she makes them help her to remind them of their introduction to this particular phase of the arts.

Geri Carlson Sauls (Director/Choreographer) Geri returns to our WVLO staff working with Elizabeth again, especially on a show that she has been wanting to get on this stage for several years. She previously directed/choreographed "42nd Street" and "Will Rogers Follies" as well as choreographing "Kiss Me Kate". On our WVLO stage she appeared in "Smokey Joe's Cafe" and as Sheila in "A Chorus Line" for which she won an ERMA award. Other directing and choreographing credits in- clude SCp's "A Chorus Line", "Joseph ..Dreamcoat" and "Jesus Christ Superstar" and SDG's "The World Goes Round". Geri has choreographed and performed in too many other shows to mention in the Bay Area. She teaches tap, jazz and musical theater jazz at Dancenter in Capitola and spends her daytime hours as a veterinarian. She extends her thanks to Janie Scott for introducing her to this show, Howard for all his fabulous ideas and, of course, her husband, Chip, for his undying love and support.

Howard L. Miller (Assistant Director) This is Howard's second show on a WVLO staff, having served as Stage Manager for "The Boy Friend". He has appeared on our stage as Harry, the Horse, in "Guys & Dolls", Max in "42nd Street" and Ralph in "Kiss Me, Kate". His directorial credits include "Oklahoma!" for SDG, "Smoke On The Mountain" for Tabard Theatre and "Steel Magnolias" for STOC. He is delighted to be working again with Geri and hopes there will be more shows in the future. 'Love to Griff & The Boys.'

14 Roberta "Bobbie" Howe (Music Director) Bobbie is delighted to return for another WVLO production, having last conducted "Oliver!" in last season's opener. An elementary school band teacher by day, she keeps busy training the next generation of pit musicians. Her first appearance with WVLO was in 1971 as a walk-on for the kid's band in "The Music Man", and she has been hooked ever since, playing reeds in our orchestra for many seasons, as well as with SDG, SCP, Western Stage and local concert bands and orchestras. She met her husband, Mi- chael Maida, during our 1989 production of "Guys & Dolls". Thanks to all of her ~ wonderful friends (especially the rnusiciansl) at WVLO, and to Michael who is appearing in our reed section once again.

Katie Coleman (Vocal Director) Katie is a freelance musician and music teacher in the Bay Area who returns for her second show with WVLO in this staff position; she was also part of our "Oliver!" staff last season. Since receiving her Bachelor of Music degree from University of the Pacific in 2004, she has been involved in over 25 productions in the Bay Area either as pianist, trumpeter, music or vocal director. Vocal Direction cred- its include "42nd Street", "Barnum", "Fiddler On The Roof", "Wind In The Willows" and most recently "The Melody Lingers On" at PHS. She also played in our orchestras for "Big River", "Marne" and "Aida", our first production this season.

Stephen C. Wathen (Production Designer) Singing Stephen's praises as our set designer is easy since he launches his 55th production with WVLO, his most recent was the unique set for ''Aida'' at the beginning of this season. However, in the meantime he has been busy designing SDG"s "She Loves Me" and ATC's "Rocky Horror Show" over the holidays. as well as painting the drops for the Stagestruck Production of "Peter Pan" at Ohlone College. Stephen's impressive list of credits includes over 300 stage productions, 25 movies and a few hundred TV shows. He is also a published playwright, well-known for his scripts of "Dracula", "The Three Musketeers" and "Night Of The Demons". He has also created special effects for George Lucas films and was involved in designing and building sets for "Planet of Dinosaurs", "Birdy" and "Demonhunter".

15 Michael Glenn Munoz (Lighting Designer) With this produc- tion, Michael lights up his 29th show for WVLO, Our regular subscribers will remember his extraordinary lighting effects he created for "Aida" at the beginning of our season. Other lighting credits have been noted by SCPL, SCp, CCMT, SDG, Wood- minster Amphitheater and Teatro Vision. He received his BA degree in Fine Arts at SJSU and loves to get on stage whenever the right role comes along.

Ken McCreight (Stage Manager) Although Ken made his first stage appearance as a slave wrangler in "Big River", his favorite roles have been backstage as Stage Manager for the first pro- duction of "Pulse" and crew for "Who's Tommy". This is his first production with WVLO, but other credits as SM include "Secret Garden", "How To Succeed ... ", "Who's Tommy", "Guys & Dolls" and "Annie". A native Californian, he enjoys spend- ing time with his wife, Michele, daughters, Carla, Caren and Tiffany, and son, Joey.

Bob Nelson (Sound Designer) Bob returns for his 17th pro- duction with WVLO, his most recent for our first show of the season, "Aida". He also designed the sound for everyone of our productions last season. His long list of impressive credits in- clude sound design for SDG, ATC and he serves as the resident sound and lighting designer for PHS where he also currently teaches Technical Theater classes. We're always pleased that Bob makes time in his busy schedule to perform this very important task for us.

Sue Howell (Costumer) Sue returns to our staff after having costumed "Aida", our last production. Her impressive list of credits includes many Bay Area theater companies; "Miss Saigon" and "Once On This Island" with CMTSJ; Paramount's Great America; FJC as seamstress and she is currently a stitcher for Ballet San Jose as well as serving as the resident Costume De- signer for the Roberta Jones Junior Theater (formerly SC Junior Theater). Sue earned her BS in Physical Therapy at CSU in Long Beach and attends FJC to acquire her Certificate of Completion in Theater Technology.
