BC Juvenile.. J. B.=s Thunder Cont. Singer raced a number of stakes horses in New York with veteran trainer Walter Kelley, the best of which was the top grass mare Videogenic, a two-time Grade I winner who earned more than $1 million while making a whopping 73 starts back in the mid->80s. It was about that time that Pollack decided she=d like to have a string in her own name. Kelley picked out a few yearlings, then handed them over to for- mer assistant Mike Daggett to train. In the ensuing years, the Pollack horses were handled by Daggett, and later by Beau Greely and Stall. Stall now conditions all of the Pol- lack colorbearers, which number 10 or 12. The top runners to carry J.B.’s Thunder Coady Photography Pollack=s Columbine Stable silks have been the sprinter Five Star Day (Carson City), who was first or second in 11 of his 16 career starts, winning the GIII Phoenix BC S. in 2000 and the GII Alfred G. Vanderbilt H. in 2001; the talented turf runner Manndar (Ire) (Doyoun {Ire}), winner of the GI Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at Churchill on Derby Day 2000 and the GI Manhattan H. in his very next appearance; and 2002 GI Hollywood Turf Cup hero Sligo Bay (Ire) (Sadler=s Wells). Both Five Star Day and Manndar took Pollack to the Breeders= Cup in 2000. Neither hit the board, but Manndar was beaten just 4 1/2 lengths by Kalanisi (Ire) (Doyoun {Ire}) when eighth in the GI BC Turf. Five Star Day was back for the 2001 GI BC Sprint and also ran eighth, but just five lengths adrift of winner Squirtle Squirt (Marquetry). The stable stars stand out, but they are not alone in Pollack=s heart. AI have to say, I=ve liked something about all of my horses,@ she said. ABut Five Star Day, he was just mag- nificent speed; Manndar had incredible heart and ability, and he was an old soul; and then Sligo Bay, he was beautifully bred and just classy all the way through.@ The latest addition to the honor role, J.B.=s Thunder, was purchased for $42,000 as a Keeneland September yearling. AFrankie and Daphne Wooten picked him out,@ Pollack said. AThey=re the people who break the horse to the saddle and the bit [at their facility in South Carolina]. They were at the sales, and they thought he was beau- tiful and well balanced, and Al Stall looked at him and agreed. They don=t buy all my horses, but I like for them to take a look at them, because they=re the ones that have to break them, and they know what it takes.@ Cont. p9 P TDN HEADLINE NEWS • 11/5/10 • PAGE 9 of 21 • thoroughbreddailynews.com

The Wootens certainly got it right. The bay went gate to wire to break his maiden on the turf at Saratoga Aug. 21, then came back to lead every step in the Breeders= Futurity, winning by four lengths. Pollack was on hand to cheer him on. AHe just amazed me,@ she offered. AI did not expect him to go to the lead, but he did, and my heart was racing all the way around. Finally, when he came around the far turn, and I saw him so far ahead, a friend of mine said I just dropped my head, because I knew he=d won at that point.@ As emotional as Pollack might get when she=s watch- ing one of her horses perform, she is a businesswoman as well, and she operates her stable as such. AMr. Kelley always said, if you have five horses in training, probably two of them won=t be any good, two of them will be OK, and then one will carry the barn,@ she remarked. AThat=s what I learned from Walter Kelley. I look at racing as a business. Some things you do for love, and some things for money. In horse rac- ing, you do it for both.@ Still, it is the joy she gets from racing that keeps her involved. AAny time you win a race, I don=t care if it=s a claim- ing race or a stakes races, your whole life stops at that very moment that the horse crosses the finish line first,@ she said. AEverything else seems slow motion after that. I have to say that every single race is just amazing--actually, any time a horse tries really very hard, it=s amazing to me.@ And the Breeders= Cup is the pinnacle. AI=m very excited,@ Pollack said. AMy gosh, this is what we all work for, to have a horse like this. This is what we all aim for and pray for, so it=s just a >yippee= moment. Every time you wake up in the morning, it=s like, >oh, yippee!= It gives you lots of hope.@

KENTUCKY BLOODSTOCK SALES Fasig-Tipton November - Nov. 7 Keeneland November - Nov. 8-20 Gulf Coast Dispersal Begins at Keeneland Lance Robinson and Jerry Bailey=s Gulf Coast Farm, which announced in early October that it was com- pletely dispersing its bloodstock, will send some 30 horses through the Keeneland November sales ring during Mon- day=s opening ses- sion of the blood- stock sale. The group will sell as hips 5001 through 5032 imme- diately following the last regularly cata- logued lot in the ses- sion. A second Lookin At Lucky Sarah K Andrew group, hips 5033 through 5077, will sell at the end of Thursday=s session of the auction. The Gulf Coast horses are consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency. Gulf Coast has developed a reputation for regularly turning out talented, well-conformed racehorses. Among the 27 stakes winners bred by the farm is champion juvenile and Saturday=s GI Breeders= Cup Classic hopeful Lookin At Lucky (Smart Strike). The farm bred, campaigned and or purchased dual Classic winner Thunder Gulch, Grade I winners Henny Hughes, Yes It=s True and Honour and Glory, as well as graded stakes winners Kensei, Cowtown Cat and Salute the Sarge. Gulf Coast-bred runners to win graded races this term include Conveyance (Indian Charlie), Lou Brissie (Lime- stone) and Grand Adventure (Grand Slam). AWe were primarily involved with mare-leasing in the past,@ Bailey said, explaining the decision to disperse the farm=s bloodstock. AAnd mare leases are no longer a viable option in the industry, so we needed to sell these horses that were involved with the mare leasing. We hope to continue in the industry in other aspects. We=ll con- tinue with the farm in Henny Hughes Sarah K Andrew Florida and training, and we hope to get involved with some other aspects of the industry in the future.@ Cont. p14 P TDN HEADLINE NEWS • 11/5/10 • PAGE 14 of 21 • thoroughbreddailynews.com

Gulf Coast Dispersal Cont. Bailey said discussions of the summer included the option to scale back, rather than completely disperse. AWe had discussions on all of that,@ he said. AWe feel if one has a dispersal, it goes best with the buying public if they know they are going to get a chance with all of your horses, rather than just a chance at what you want to sell them. So I think anytime there is a dispersal, it makes for a better marketplace.@ The Gulf Coast dispersal has Kensei A Coglianese generated plenty of interest from potential buyers, accord- ing to Taylor Made=s Mark Taylor. AWe=ve had a lot of people calling the farm and want- ing to come out and see both the mares and the foals,@ Taylor confirmed. AI think Gulf Coast has such a reputa- tion in the market for producing not only really top- class racehorses, but also, their signature thing is con- formation. The great thing about a Gulf Coast horse, when you get a runner, they are great-looking, too, and their value automatically goes up. So there have been a lot of people that really want to get a piece of that Gulf Coast legacy.@ Through Taylor Made, Gulf Coast sold Private Feeling (Belong to Me), the dam of Lookin At Lucky and Kensei, for $2 million at last year=s Fasig-Tipton November sale. The mare=s yearling colt by Afleet Alex sold for $750,000 through the Gainesway consignment at this year=s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale. The dispersal will give bidders the chance to own a piece of a proven system. AA lot of people who have historically tried to buy out of these Gulf Coast mares and get shut out--whether it be pinhookers or end users, they haven=t been able to get the horses bought,@ Taylor said. ASo they say, >Oh man, I loved Grand Adventure or I loved Conveyance and I was an underbidder.= They know that these are really good-looking horses, so people are looking to come out because they know this is a great opportu- nity; >Maybe I can afford to get a younger sibling or something out of the mare, or even get the factory bought and I can continue to produce my own.=@ Taylor is particularly impressed with the Gulf Coast weanlings selling at the November auction. AIn my scale, an A minus is a really high grade for a weanling,@ Taylor said. AIf I look at 100 foals, there typically might be 10 A minuses. If you look at this Gulf Coast group, there are 15 just in that group alone. Just across the board, it=s a very good group of foals.@ Included in the group is hip 5023, a colt from the first crop of GI Breeders= Cup Classic winner Raven=s Pass (Elusive Quality). Out of Eishin Bridle (Unbridled), who precedes her weanling into the Keeneland ring, the gray is a half-brother to stakes winner Road Read (More Than Ready) and to Grade I stakes placed Be Smart (Smarty Jones). Certainly, the creation in 2001 of the broad-based coalition known as the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium (RMTC) has made drug reform a priority and given the industry a vehicle to conduct necessary research and make recommendations. In fact, the McKinsey Report served as the road map in the early days of RMTC. The RMTC's Drug Testing Initiative, in particular, has made significant inroads, as we heard from Alan Fore- man, an RMTC board member, at the Round Table Conference in August. The six major recommendations of the McKinsey Report were: Animal selection policy: adopt a new system built around testing 50 percent of the winners and other specific finisher categories. Two states, Kentucky and Washington, are experi- menting with this philosophy for the first time ever this year. There is still resistance to such a policy from many industry stakeholders but that could change if there are remarkable results in these two states. Sample collection and documentation process: all steps in the sample collection process should be fully documented to minimize litigation problems and an industry-wide split sample process should be adopted to maintain fairness. This has been almost universally adopted. There are almost no cases overturned anymore due to chain of custody issues and while the mechanics of the split sample programs still differ between the states, the opportunity is afforded in all. The RMTC, as part of its Drug Testing Initiatives, has Research and technology management: a national contracted with a company to provide, for the first time research program should be adopted to establish ever, an independent quality assurance program that threshold levels; develop tests for drugs where current will go into place in 2011. I been reading Mr. Whiteley's essays (TDN 11/4/10) with great interest, and I think the latest, dealing with stud fees, is finally getting to the heart of the matter. If you're trying to judge the viability of any business (assuming, of course, that there's a market for the product), it all boils down to two factors: What's the cost structure? And how do you get paid? If the cost structure is out of whack, the business isn't going to make it. The thoroughbred industry is so compartmen- talized that it's easy to forget that it's really just one long (very long) supply chain, and that the end product is the horse on the track. That's where the industry gets paid. All the other activities, starting at the breed- ing shed, are processes in the production of that horse. If the cost of these processes adds up to more than the revenue the horse can generate, you need to find some savings--in a hurry. Most of the processes involved in the production of a racehorse seem to be based on real factors: labour, overhead, the cost of capital. Stud fees, well, stud fees are something else again. If the percent- age of "A" runners produced by even the most suc- cessful sires is in the single digits, how can these fees be justified economically? If your financial advisor sug- gested an investment of $100,000, with a 95% chance of failure, what would you say--besides "Goodbye?" Stud fees don't seem to have any basis in economic reality, and the shockingly low percentage of profitable weanlings and yearlings would seem to bear this out. The market is saying that these horses are not worth their cost of production, and the biggest part of that cost is the stud fee. This is an agribusiness, and if the cost of seed is greater than the value of the crop, you're eventually going to have to start growing some- thing else. Michael Gojanovich, Guelph, Ontario

SWORD DANCE DIES AT 26 Top Florida stallion Sword Dance (Ire) (Nijinsky II--Rosa Mundi, by Secretar- iat) died of natural causes at Gil and Marilyn Campbell=s Stonehedge Farm South Monday. Retired to stud in 1990 and pensioned in 2004, the multiple graded stakes winner was 26. The winner of the GII Del Mar H. was responsible for 23 black-type win- ners, including GI Arlington Million winner Marlin and millionaire and graded stakes winner Blazing Sword. ASword Dance was the first big stallion we purchased, and he brought Stonehedge and Mr. & Mrs. Campbell a lot of success,@ King said. AHe was a foundation horse in Florida, one of the few to sire an Arlington Million winner. He had a foundation pedigree, and he was such a consistent sire for so long. He will be missed.@ Sword Dance will be buried at the farm.
