THE LIBERAL LABEL: A REFLECTION OF CONSERVATIVE PUBLIC OPINION OR POINTED POLITICAL RHETORIC? A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Communication, Culture, and Technology By Nora Catherine Todd, B.A. Washington, D.C. August 31, 2006 ABSTRACT In the 2004 presidential election, Republicans frequently and successfully attacked Democratic candidate John Kerry for being a liberal Senator from Massachusetts. Since the 1960 election, the use of this liberal label has increased significantly and its connotations have become extremely negative. Examining candidates’ political convention addresses, presidential candidate debates, and campaign commercials reveals obvious trends of the epithet’s increasing use by the Republicans at the expense of the Democrats. Public opinion analysis reveals that the newfound use of the liberal label is not a reflection of Americans’ changing opinion about the political left wing or its ideology; instead, it is the product of a clever conservative campaign strategy. Regardless of their origins, these changes in ideological rhetoric have occurred at the sacrifice of the Democrats’ ideological identity and productive policy discourse. Democrats must reclaim the liberal label to prevent an ideological identity crisis, to protect future left-wing candidates from ideological attacks, and to improve political discourse overall. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS To my mentor, Diana Owen iii

  • 2014 Election Preview OIA GA FINAL10.27.14.Pdf
2014 Election Preview I. Background on 2014 elections The 2014 election had been difficult to predict due to some dead-heat races in the Senate, but it appears that Republicans will have an edge next Tuesday in many close races and are poised to take control of Congress. The House of Representatives will stay Republican- controlled, with very few tight races due to districting. The Senate is the big wild card here as there is a great deal of uncertainty around what could happen in nine key races, just six of which could cost the Democrats their majority. Republicans should be on their way to a shoe-in election, gaining them control of both chambers of Congress due to a very unpopular 2nd term President and Congress’ low approval rating. However, because of campaign gaffes, some lack-luster candidates, and stumbles in races that should have been safe, their take-over of the Senate is in no way guaranteed. In general, Democrats need to focus on turnout/grassroots efforts, and Republicans need to focus on shoring up their base and avoiding gaffes. Things could also change a lot over the next few weeks so event at this late date, some races are very difficult to predict. II. United States House of Representatives All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for re-election. Currently, Republicans control 233 seats and Democrats control 199 seats, with 3 vacancies. The 2014 election is unlikely to change Republicans strong majority in the House and may, in fact, result in a larger number of Republican controlled seats, as they are projected to add 5-7 seats on November 4th.

  • Explaining Technical Breakdowns in Political Communication: Data, Analytics, and the 2012 Presidential Campaign Cycle
Explaining Technical Breakdowns in Political Communication: Data, Analytics, and the 2012 Presidential Campaign Cycle Daniel Kreiss Assistant Professor School of Journalism and Mass Communication University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Paper presented at the International Communication Association Annual Meeting, Seattle, Washington, May 2014 Adapted from Networked Ward Politics: Parties, Databases, and Campaigning in the Information Age. New York, NY: Oxford University Press, anticipated publication date August 2016. Abstract During the 2012 presidential campaign, it was apparent that Obama's re-election effort was far more sophisticated in the use of technology, data, and analytics to target voters, tailor communication to them, and leverage the efforts of its volunteers than its Republican counterpart. Drawing on interviews with senior staffers in the Republican Party and Mitt Romney campaign, as well on the Obama re-election campaign, this paper explores the technical underpinnings of much contemporary political communication. It explains why the Romney campaign was significantly behind its rival in its use of the digital tools, data, and analytics that shape political communication across platforms ranging from cable television advertising and social media to field campaigning. It shows how party dynamics after Bush’s re-election bid, the characteristics of the Republican Party’s extended network of consultants, failures in campaign organization, and the new advantages of incumbency for technical development combined to produce

  • The Politics of the American Knowledge Economy*
The Politics of the American Knowledge Economy* Nicholas Short Harvard University [email protected] August 07, 2020 Abstract The American knowledge economy (AKE) is not a mysterious transition in the organization of economic production. It is instead a politically generated consensus for producing economic prosperity in which intellectual property, and the businesses that produce it, play a leading role. The history of AKE development reveals as much and also shows that, while the legal regimes governing the AKE achieved bipartisan consensus, the AKE would not have emerged without a fundamental realignment within the Democratic Party. The history also shows that the AKE has severe distributional consequences and recent empirical work reinforces the view that the AKE is an engine of geographic, economic, and political inequality. • When God Collides with Race and Class: Working-Class America’S Shift to Conservatism
WHEN GOD COLLIDES WITH RACE AND CLASS: WORKING-CLASS AMERICA’S SHIFT TO CONSERVATISM Mark R. Thompson* The Knights of Columbus are . defending the values of faith and family that bind us as a nation. I appreciate your working to protect the Pledge of Allegiance, to keep us “one nation under God.” I want to thank you—I want to thank you for the defense of the traditional family. [The Family] is a most fundamental institution for our society. I appreciate the fact you’re promoting the culture of life. We’re making progress here in America. Last November, I signed a law to end the brutal practice of partial-birth abortion. This law is constitutional; this law is compassionate; this law is urgently needed; and my administration will vigorously defend it in the courts. We’ll work together to strengthen incentives for adoption and parental notification laws. My 2005 budget [sic], I proposed to more than triple federal funds for abstinence programs in schools and community-based programs above 2001 levels. I’ll continue to work with Congress to pass a comprehensive and effective ban on human cloning. Human life is a creation of God, not a commodity to be exploited by man. I look forward to . defend[ing] the sacred bond of marriage. A few activist judges have taken it upon themselves to redefine the institution of marriage by court order. I support a constitutional amendment to protect the sanctity of marriage by ensuring it is always recognized as the union of a man and woman as husband and wife.
