LÜTEM Review of Armenian Studies 3 No. 24, 2011 4 Review of Armenian Studies No. 24, 2011 EDITORIAL NOTE s a tradition, the first article of the current issue of our Journal is Facts and Comments which summarizes the significant Adevelopments regarding the Armenian Question. The developments in concerning the punishment of those denying the Armenian genocide allegations have gained so much significance that the entire article has been dedicated to these developments. The second article of our Journal is entitled Mkrtich Portukalian and the “Armenia” Journal (From Terrorism to Skeptical Modesty) written by Prof. Dr. Louis Mattei. Prof Mattei sheds light on the life of Mkrtich Portukalian who is not well known but has an important position within the “revolutionary” Armenian history and particularly his “Armenia” Journal that has been published. Prof. William Schabas is considered as authority within the field of Genocide Law and his book entitled “Genocide of International Law” is his most well known publication. It could be observed that the complications and EDITORIAL NOTE contradictions experienced in regards to the concept of genocide, mostly due to political reasons, are also present in Schabas’s book. Prof. Dr. Sadi Çaycı addresses these complications in his article entitled The Concept of Genocide in International Law: William A. Schabas’s Views on 1915 Armenian Events. Dr. Bahar Senem Çevik-Ersaydı, in her article entitled Dehumanization in Cartoons: A Case Study of the Image of the Turk in Asbarez Newspaper, presents how the Turkish image is tried to be dehumanized with the cartoons published in this newspaper of the Armenian Diaspora. Derk Jan van der Linde’s article entitled The Armenian Genocide Question & Legal Responsibility deals with the Armenian Genocide Question from a legal standpoint. Linde seeks to answer whether any form of direct state and/or individual responsibility can arise under the workings of the Genocide Convention and whether it is in fact legally correct to apply the terminology of genocide to the events of 1915. Review of Armenian Studies 5 No. 24, 2011 Armenia and Iran are neighbors. Moreover, there is an important Armenian minority in Iran. Apart from being neighbors, these two countries also maintain close relations for being in opposition to Azerbaijan. In her article entitled Iran and Armenia: A Symbiotic Relationship, Assistant Professor Zeynep Kaya provides an insight to the complicated and complex relations of these two countries. French singer Charles Aznavour who is of Armenian origin has written a book concerning his own life. In his article entitled Charles Aznavour’s Book Entitled D’une Porte L’aue (From One Door To The Next): Historical Facts and Turkish Armenian Relations, Doğanay Eryılmaz addresses the statements of Aznavour in his book regarding Turkey-Armenia relations and draws attention to his significant lack of information on this issue. This issue contains one book review. The book of English journalist/writer Robert Fisk entitled The Great War of Civilization: The Conquest of Middle East written in 2005 has just recently been translated into Turkish. The USNRC program, integrated within the overall IAEA-led initiative for safety re-evaluation of the WWER plants, has as its main thrust the technical support to the Armenian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (ANRA) through close collaboration with the scientific staff at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). Several major technical areas of support to ANRA form the basis of the NRC program. These include the seismic re-evaluation and upgrade of the ANPP, safety evaluation of critical systems, and the generation of the Safety Analysis Report (SAR). Specifically, the seismic re-evaluation of the ANPP is part of a broader activity that involves the re-assessment of the seismic hazard at the site, the identification of the Safe Shutdown Equipment at the plant and the evaluation of their seismic capacity, the detailed modeling and analysis of the critical facilities at ANPP, and the generation of the Floor Response Spectra (FRS). Based on the new spectra that incorporate all new findings (hazard, site soil, structure, etc.), the overall capacity of the main structures and the seismic capacity of the critical systems are being re-evaluated.

  • Memorializing the Earthquake
    MEMORIALIZING THE EARTHQUAKE Gayane Shagoyan “When I was four, once I said that although I have not seen the earthquake I did remember it”. The author of these words was born seven months after the earthquake.1 he present article deals with the problem of moralization of the dev- astating earthquake of December 7, 1988 in Armenia that took the lives of 25,000 people and completely or partially destroyed the cit- ies Spitak, Leninakan (now Gyumri) and Kirovakan (now Vanadzor). TI will focus on the processes of remembering and forgetting the earthquake on the example of one of the cities most damaged during the disaster – Gyumri (the second largest city in Armenia). These processes will be analyzed in the context of correlation of two types of memories following the terminology of J. Assman: Communicative and cul- tural memories,2 in other words living, everyday memory (story-telling, rituals of commemoration, and subject memory3) and official, monumental memory which has canonized the cultural text on the event. Of these two types of memories the communicative memory is evidently more emotional and aims to communicate the experience of the trauma to future generations. According to one school girl from Gyumri, time does not heal but rather sharpens the perception of pain: “The pain gets worse when the wound cools off”.4 But this does not disclaim a certain flexibility of communicative memory. 1 From the essay of the school student of tenth grade of Akhuryan school No 1.     Constructing the post-Soviet Armenian National Habitus: The Armenian Genocide and Contested Imaginations of Armenianness by Sevan Beurki Beukian A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Political Science University of Alberta © Sevan Beurki Beukian, 2015 Abstract Armenians around the world commemorated the centennial of the Armenian Genocide in 2015, underscoring how compelling it is to consider contemporary expressions of their identity in relation to collective traumatic memory. This study examines the impact of the collective memory of the Genocide on the discursive shifts in Armenian national identity from 1988 until 2013. Inspired by Bourdieu’s concept of habitus and critical discourse analysis, the theoretical framework of the dissertation links national habitus to the literature on collective memory and trauma and gendered constructions of the nation state. The main research question guiding this study is: How is ‘Armenianness' constructed in the period 1988-2013? A secondary research question examined is: Has the dominant discourse on ‘Armenianness’ shifted or changed in this period, and if so, how and why? This study identifies four main pillars of Armenian collective identity in the contested construction of the discourse of ‘Armenianness’: 1) the place of women and constructions of femininity; 2) the 1988 movement in Armenia; 3) diaspora-homeland relations; and 4), Turkey- Armenia relations. Using discourse analysis to analyze 48 semi-structured interviews conducted in Armenia and Karabakh in 2011 and other ‘texts’ such as government documents, speeches, videos, and documentaries, the case of Armenia is examined not only horizontally across time, but also across several issues that shape the political and social environment of post-Soviet Armenia.
