Nichols Professor of Communications Associate Dean for Graduates Studies and Research *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School ABSTRACT Competition and diversity are touchstones in media policy, but the relationship between them is not clear despite a great number of studies because even studies dealing with their relationship, did not measure the intensity of competition. This paper investigates the relationship between market competition and program type diversity in the over-the-air television industry. Specifically, market competition is divided into intra-network competition and intra-media competition, i.e. terrestrial television vs. cable TV. Also this paper uses a comprehensive model of program types, with 281 program type categories, which have never been used in previous studies. The results show that program type diversity keeps decreasing over time and intra-network competition has a negative effect on program type diversity. Also, intra- network competition is a more important factor on program type diversity than inter- media competition.

We grew up with western movie stars like John Wayne, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Audie Murphy, Randolph Scott and many more. Western actor Bob Steele was born Robert Adrian Bradbury on January 23, 1907 in Portland, Oregon, into a vaudeville family. After about ten years of touring, the family settled in Hollywood, California, where his father soon found work in the movies, first as an actor and later as a director. Bradbury actually directed John Wayne in more westerns than any other director, albeit low-budget ones. By 1920, Robert Bradbury hired his son Bob and Bob's twin brother, Bill (1907–1971), as juvenile leads for a series of adventure movies titled The Adventures of Bob and Bill. Steele's career began to take off for good in 1927, when he was hired by production company Film Booking Offices of America (FBO) to star in a series of westerns. Renamed Bob Steele at FBO, he soon made a name for himself by working for almost every film studio, including Monogram, Supreme, Tiffany, Syndicate, Republic (including several films of the Three Mesquiteers series) and Producers Releasing Corporation (PRC) (including the initial films of their "Billy the Kid" series), plus he had a role in an adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel, Of Mice and Men in 1939.

    Some Guidelines for evaluating media portrayals of Indians Cultural questions: How are Native Americans portrayed? Are they portrayed as savages or primitives? Inferior? Simple? Or are they portrayed as members of a complex culture with norms and values and religious systems that ask the same basic questions as other societies? Are Native Americans lumped together as one culture, as if there is only one Indian culture? Are they seen as diverse, following the same practices, with the same lifestyles and customs? Are they depicted as cultures of the past, without contemporary significance? Is the focus on the material? On objects? Or is there a recognition of the deeply alive nature of Native cultures and an emphasis on the importance of the sacred in everyday life? Are Natives depicted as individuals or as communities? Is the communal nature of Native societies understood and respected? Are Natives measured by the standards of success of the majority culture or by their own standards? Are gender and elderly roles treated with importance? Many Native cultures are matriarchal and all value the wisdom of elders and the importance of ancestors. Or, are Native cultures presented according to Western standards for gender and generational issues? History: Does history reflect the viewpoint of the victor? Is an Indian massacre called a triumph or a victory for example? Is sovereignty respected? Are Natives depicted as self- determining? Are the contributions of Native Americans recognized? It contains critical annotations and evaluations of approximately 1,000 books, most published 1960-93, and points out controversial titles and disagreements about specific books. The focus is primarily on materials for elementary and secondary students but also includes publications of interest to the general public. Sections are organized by culture area--General, Southwest, Northwest Coast, California, Plateau, Arctic, Plains, Great Basin, Subarctic, Northeast, and Southeast--and each area is further organized by tribe and then divided into nonfiction, fiction, biographies, and traditional stories. Within each section, entries are listed alphabetically by author and include publisher, publishing date, and number of pages. Broad reading-level categories are indicated as lower elementary, upper elementary, secondary, or adult.

Roy Rogers' early success came as a musician with The Sons of the Pioneers before he began a solo career as a Republic Pictures singing cowboy star. His successful career led to decades of working in radio, film, and television. Dale Evans began her work as a singer on the radio and in night clubs, before starting work as a film actress. She and Rogers worked together in B Westerns for Republic Pictures before starring in their own television shows and public appearance tours. In addition to her work as a performer, Dale Evans also published inspirational books. The Archive has a small selection of the personal papers of Rogers and Evans, and their manager Art Rush, but is primarily a business archive reflecting brand marketing strategies and offering insight into fan reception.
