7. Conclusion : Telefilm, Cross-Media Migration, and the Demise of the Film Serial Abstract The conclusion offers an outlook past the 1940s. It places film serials in the context of the shifting cinema landscape in the 1940s and 1950s and the rise of television. The chapter compares the viewer address of film serials to television’s programming in terms of a ‘segmented flow’ and argues that film serials imagined and practiced a televisual mediality before the advent of TV. Serials and television thus became convergent media, which counters the prevalent notion that television killed film serials. The chapter further stresses the adaptability of the film-serial form to varying exhibition and distribution contexts, which helps to explain their continuous reappearance in the multiple ‘new media’ in the second half of the twentieth century and in the digital culture of the twenty-first century. Keywords: television programming, televisual flow, post-WWII film history, independent film production The present moment is an arbitrary one to end a study of film serials. Al- though the heyday of their production is well in the past, serials that were thought to be lost continue to reappear in archives or in private collections. Online fan groups like the serialsquadron.com offer increasing numbers of serials on DVD. Other enthusiasts make them available on youtube or upload them to archive.org, and scholars like Richard Koszarski are making an effort to locate ‘new’ film serials. In the final months of writing, for instance, Pathe’s The House of Hate (1918) was located in Russia, digitalized, and translated back into English. -

Stu Davis: Canada’s Cowboy Troubadour by Brock Silversides Stu Davis was an immense presence on Western Canada’s country music scene from the late 1930s to the late 1960s. His is a name no longer well-known, even though he was continually on the radio and television waves regionally and nationally for more than a quarter century. In addition, he released twenty-three singles, twenty albums, and published four folios of songs: a multi-layered creative output unmatched by most of his contemporaries. Born David Stewart, he was the youngest son of Alex Stewart and Magdelena Fawns. They had emigrated from Scotland to Saskatchewan in 1909, homesteading on Twp. 13, Range 15, west of the 2nd Meridian.1 This was in the middle of the great Regina Plain, near the town of Francis. Sons of the Pioneers Charity Benefit Concert
SONS OF THE PIONEERS CHARITY BENEFIT CONCERT The legendary Sons of the Pioneers will be appearing in concert on Saturday evening, November 3, at 6:30 p.m. at the Victor Valley College Performing Arts Center, in Victorville, California. This special charity performance will benefit the abused children served by the Happy Trails Children’s Foundation in Apple Valley, California. For decades, the Sons of the Pioneers have musically painted unforgettable images of the West; horses, cattle, cowboys, trails, tall timber, canyons and prairies. Their original songs like “Tumbling Tumbleweeds” and “Cool Water” are classics forever entwined into the lore and mystique of the American West. Both songs have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. The Sons of the Pioneers are the most highly awarded singing group of all time. Among their many prestigious awards, they have been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Western Music Association Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and the National Cowboy Hall of Fame – Hall of Great Western Performers, for their legacy of works in literature, music, film and television that reflect the significant stories of the American West. The Smithsonian Institute named them as “National Treasures.” The Sons of the Pioneers history began in the fall of 1933 when a young man from Duck Run, Ohio, Leonard Slye, then only 22 years of age and living in Southern California, contacted two of his friends, Bob Nolan and Tim Spencer, to form a musical group. They worked long and hard to develop a unique close harmony sound that has had an enduring influence on American music to this day. -

Whether with the blues, the Big Mac, tailfins on Cadillacs, or the legacy of space travel, the United States continually astounds and, from time to time, confounds the world with its prolific cultural productivity. Things American are everywhere, at least anywhere a radio wave can reach a receiver or a satellite signal can touch a television set, and two of the most ubiquitous Yankee exports are the mythical cowboy of the Wild West and country music. Bob Livingston, an accomplished Austin musician, has helped to shape these singular institutions into an effective tool of American diplomacy. Since 1986, Livingston has toured extensively in South Asia and the Middle East as an emissary of the State Department of the United States presenting a musical program he calls “Cowboys and Indians.” He describes his mission (with his tongue only partially in his cheek) as an attempt “to achieve world peace through cowboy songs and yodeling.”1 Livingston’s ambitious crusade has touched the lives of thousands around the world by offering a refreshing and holistic view of American culture.
