After five years inside, Warren would much rather be lying under a palm tree up north, than creeping around alleys in a hole like Glenmoore. But first he has to deliver on a promise he made to his cellmate Sumo. So now he has a photograph of a girl and a house, and a psychopathic guard dog to make friends with. One last job. Should be straightforward. But then he’s forced to join a local support group as part of his parole. Which turns out to mean sitting round playing board games with a bunch of weirdos like Sally, a cat-burglar in training, Tom, a kid with anger problems, and Bev and Clem, a pair of old ducks with a penchant for poker. Well, Warren can deal with that. Trouble is, the group doesn’t know how to deal with Warren. They haven’t had a new member in years, let alone one who is a real criminal, and it turns their cosy world upside down. Allegiances get tested, secrets come out, things go missing. And somebody in the group wants Warren gone. Warren would rather be gone himself, but it’s not easy to get the job done with Sally following him around. She has big career plans, and they involve Warren. He’s not getting away that easily. ONE LINE SYNOPIS Warren steps out of prison and straight into a self-help group whose idea of therapy is to play board games. He has written and directed about a dozen since then - on super8, digital tape and film. His first two super8 films won the Metro Super8 Film Festival two years in a row, after which the festival closed down. This had nothing to do with him. His16mm film ‘Rubbernecking’ (3mins, 1999) won the Pegasus Award, a short film competition established by Ansett Airlines, which only ran for a year. That’s the competition, not the airline... His16mm film ‘Vitalogy’ (20mins) travelled overseas a lot, and won third prize somewhere in Switzerland. It also won best short comedy at the Melbourne International Film Festival in 2001. His miniDV film ‘The Little Woman’ and ‘In Your Dreams’, won the awards at Tropfest in 2004 and 2005 respectively, and ‘The Little Woman’ won the best short film at the 2004 Melbourne Comedy Festival. All these festivals appear healthy. ‘The Glenmoore Job’ is the latest project and will screen on SBS TV in the New Year. CASE PROGRAM 2007-98.1 Reviewing the Australian film industry An indigenous film industry is not about the box office – the French value on culture, diversity, and the value of a mirror on society is a far more relevant model.1 John Maynard, Producer, Romulus My Father Australia is a strange place when it comes to film finance. It’s always been puzzling to me. You speak the same language, you’ve got great production facilities, you’ve got studios down there, you’ve got great locations, and you have some of the biggest stars, but when it comes to actually making movies for the international market, it rarely happens that you have an Australian producer who finances it using Australian money which hasn’t been subsided and makes it as an international film.2 Jared Underwood, Film financier Film investment is probably one of the riskiest investments and even if you go on to Hollywood, less than one in ten films actually go into a profit. Most of the world is independent film making and wherever you go, anywhere in Europe, there's always some sort of subsidy to support an independent film industry.3 Brian Rosen, Chief Executive, Film Finance Corporation After a renaissance in Australian film-making during the 1970s, by 2006 production levels had slumped to their lowest point since the early 1990s. Spending on television drama was in decline and foreign film production had plummeted dramatically from previous years. As private investment was dwindling, financing was increasingly in the hands of the Film This case was written by Marinella Padula, Australia and New Zealand School of Government, for Peter Thompson as a basis for class discussion rather than to illustrate either effective or ineffective handling of a managerial situation.

Sensibel und selbstzerstörerisch Erinnerung an Heath Ledger (4. 4. 1979 – 22. 1. 2008) Von Frank Noack Heathcliff Andrew Rufus Gregory Fitzpatrick Peter Bob Ledger III wird am 4. April 1979 in Perth (Australien) geboren. (Heath Ledger zu Johannes Bonke in Ulysses, Februar 2006) "I never went to acting school; I never had acting classes or lessons. ... All my mistakes are on film - my growing process and learning process is documented." (Heath Ledger zu Alonso Duralde in The Advocate, 17.1.2005) Auf ein wenig Theatererfahrung folgt sein Fernsehdebüt mit der Serie Sweat: "I had no idea what I was doing. It was a terrible performance; it was a terrible TV show - I'm awful in it ... it's just a teenage kid who confesses to his friend hat he's gay." NAME OF FILM: Chopper (R18+) YEAR OF ORIGINAL RELEASE: 2000 DIRECTED BY: Andrew Dominik STARRING: Eric Bana, Vince Colosimo and Simon Lyndon MELBOURNE LOCATIONS INCLUDE: Pentridge Prison and BoJangles nightclub. MY STAR RATING: 4.5 stars IN A NUTSHELL: A fictional dramatisation and exploration of the life of notorious convicted criminal Mark Brandon “Chopper” Read. Before Carl Williams, there was Mark Brandon “Chopper” Read, rescuing ordinary Melbournians from shady underworld figures and “other assorted scallywag behaviour”. Inspired by Read’s best-selling autobiography, From The Inside, Chopper is a tantalisingly treacherous squirm-in-your-seat exposé of the twisted bloody antics of Australia’s most recognizable criminal. The casual brutality and constant bombardment of the insalubrious, seedy and obscene, is complemented by a dark humour, that makes for a psychotically compelling journey. Besides, no-one minds seeing repulsive greasy- haired convicted criminals and crippled wogs, foul-mouthed prostitutes or irritating foreigners getting stabbed, shot, bashed or killed. Right? Welcome to the confused set of amorals and unjustifiable justifications that govern Chopper’s (Eric Bana) world. Chopper seems oblivious to the often-gruesome violence when contemplating and committing atrocities, yet suffers inconsolable remorse and appears visibly traumatised by the consequences of his actions, as if the outcome of repeatedly stabbing a man in the face is somehow unforeseeable. So is he “a good bloke (fanciful story-teller and humanist of sorts) down on his luck”, or simply a hypocritical sadist who “bashes people just to get a name” for himself? The naive folk-law loving adolescent in me would like to believe the former.

  • Chopper Film Pitch
Chopper Film Pitch Mark Brandon Reid, AKA ‘Chopper’, stand-over man, unremorseful underworld killer, inventive philosopher and Australia’s most infamous living criminal. Although 19 souls have fallen under his weapon, his bright personality and colorful imagination has landed him with a cult status. In a way Chopper is witnessed as a prospective ‘hero’, cleaning up the Victorian underworld. As his target victims were all of a criminal status, such as drug dealers and thieves. Chopper spent the most part of his life in state penitentiary, and was eventually released after cutting off his own ears. Beneath all the tattoos, guns and murderous antics the complex psychology of an average intellectual, friendly natured man is revealed. The film ‘Chopper’, directed by Andrew Dominik, is a great example of quality Australian cinema and I believe it should be screened at this International Film Festival. The film was inspired by the national best-selling books by Mark 'Chopper' Read himself. It seamlessly captures the dramatic elements of our country’s criminal underworld. It also encapsulates the frightening, savagely funny and twisted story of Mark ‘Chopper’ Reid. Chopper Read is the latest in a distinguished line that includes Ned Kelly, Mad Max, and Russell Crowe's Hando in "Romper Stomper." The film illustrates powerful cinematography, great acting and an unforgettable story that will undoubtedly keep any audience on the edge of their seats. This film takes the covers off Australia’s most infamous criminal icon to expose the rawness of Mark Brandon Reid’s most powerful blow to Australia’s criminal history. The film follows Chopper’s dreams of making a name for himself as a legendary crime figure.
