4 COURTSIDE – APRIL 2010 COURTSIDE – APRIL 2010 5 GOOD WEATHER AND THE PROMISE OF GREAT TENNIS AND SQUASH ENCOURAGED A LARGE CROWD TO THE OPEN DAY HELD ON 28 FEBRUARY. Several Members took the opportunity to bring family and friends and a number of tours were conducted to showcase the new clubhouse, facilities and services. At midday, guests were invited to attend a celebration in the refurbished Kooyong Room and a crowd nearing 200 in number enjoyed drinks and a bite. President Ian Hill congratulated the Building Development Committee and all involved in the planning and construction of the renovated and extended Clubhouse. “Kooyong today is clearly one of the great clubs of the world and the completed works offer great facilities for this and future generations,” he said. Ian also acknowledged the excellent work of Club Treasurer, Des Hinsley who led the Building Development Committee. Ian announced that in recognition of his excellent service as

Chairman of the Building Development Committee and for his exceptional work as Treasurer of Kooyong for almost a decade, Des is to be awarded the Distinguished Member Award. Following the ceremony and festivities in the Kooyong Room the finals of the Club Championships began a little after 1pm. Many Members moved out to the terraces to enjoy the Men’s and Women’s Singles finals as Jay Salter won his ninth title and Lisa D’Amelio won her first. Jay defeated Paul Arber in impressive fashion while Lisa was able to upstage a challenge from Bairnsdale’s Sophie Vickers to get her name on the honour board. The sporting highlights kept coming as Members were then treated to some world-class squash matches as the Club’s Squash Championships reached a crescendo at 3pm with the men’s final closely followed by the women’s final. Mark Ikin took out his 6th title after losing the first game in a tight battle with rising star Josh Cardwell while former world number one Sarah Fitz-Gerald was too good for Melody Francis, who is now ranked in the top 60 in the world. This was a fantastic way to top off a wonderful day for the Club and many Members stayed on to enjoy a beautiful evening in the restaurants and on the balconies as the remaining matches of the Club Championships were played out on the grass courts.

In December the Wayne Arthurs Cup, held for junior players 10 years and under, was played for the third time and attracted 17 teams to Kooyong.

Waverley had won the event in its first two years but this time had to settle for sixth as North Suburban Junior Tennis Association and Bayside-Moorabbin Regional Tennis Association made the running across the weekend.
