ReevesandGreaves. In his interesting paper on this subject," Dr. Cane touches on, but does not make clear, the relationship between the two terms. Reeveis the modern descendant in the Midlands and the South of Old English (ge)refa, which is not to be confused with greave. In (ge)refathe g was pronounced like a y; the prefix disappeared and the word became revein Middle English. The corresponding modern form in Scotland and Northern is grievewhich derives from Old Northumbrian *grdfa, the northern equivalent of the West Saxon (ge)refa. The initial g was hard and gave Middle English greve. A third form, with approximately the same meaning, is found in the Scandinavian counties, Middle English greyve, from Old Norse grOfe. In South Yorkshire in the sixteenth century, the English greveand the Scandinavian greyvewere pronounced very much alike and their spellings became confused. Both terms had given rise to surnames, the English grevenow surviving as Greeves, Greaves or Grieves, the Scandinavian greyveusually as Graves. The Rotherham greaveis a survival of Old Northumbrian *grdfa. In , the normal English form was (ge)rila which is found as reveside by side with the Scandinavian greyve. In a Suffolk document of the reign of Henry III in the Cartu- lary we find Hubert le Greyueand in 1317 in the Suffolk Fines William le Greive, whilst in the 1327 Subsidy Roll we have both Guy le Reve and Adam le Reuesson. Both forms still survived in the 1524 Subsidy Roll : John Greveand John Greyvethe elder. The reevederives from Old English (ge)dfa. P. H. REANEY, LITT.D., PH.D.

A SeventeenthCentury Token. Mr. Alex. E. Rollings, of Debenham, reports that a halfpenny token, issued by John Blumfeild of Worlingworth, was found in the parish of Debenham in the spring of 1954. This is No. 358 on page 76 of Golding's Coinageof Suffolk, and bears on the obverse the arms of the Grocers' Company, a chevronbetweenninecloves. L.D.

These figures show a net increase of 22 over those for 1953. Excursions,LecturesandMeetings:—Four excursions were arranged during the summer:— May 20 Hawstead Church; Coldham Hall; Gedding Hall; Rattlesden Church. June 10 Framsden Church and Hall; Helmingham Church and Hall. July 21 Starston Church; Fressingfield Church; Ufford Hall; Southwold Church and Museum. Sept. 10 Chippenham Church; Badlingham Manor; Isleham Church and Priory; Mildenhall Church. Six lectures were given at Ipswich and Bury St. Edmunds in the course of the year, those at Ipswich being held in conjunction with the Ipswich Historical Society. The lectures at Ipswich were as follows :— Jan. 20 The Fitments of a Mediaeval Church, by the Rev. J. F. Williams, M.A., F.S.A. Mar. 17 The Draining of the Fens, by Mr. John Saltmarsh, M.A., F.S.A. White on "The Old Town Library"; and by Mr. Birkin Haward on "Some Examples of East Anglian Stained Glass". The lectures at Bury St. Edmunds were:— • Jan. 16 The Pakenham Excavations, by Mr. Norman Smedley, M.A. Nov. 6 Heraldry in Suffolk Churches, by Mr. G. Ludovici. Dec. 4 The Preservation of Historic Buildings, by the Earl of Euston. J. M. Maltby, our Honorary Librarian. Also, early in 1955, of Mr. Arthur Welford, who was largely responsible as Financial Secretary, for putting the Institute's finances on a sound footing after the war. RevisionofRules.—Arevision of the rules of the Society was unanimously agreed at the Annual General Meeting on 22 April 1954. The revised rules are printed in this issue. SUFFOLK INSTITUTE OF ARCHROLOGY 251

Finance.—The Hon. Financial Secretary reports :—

' The audited accounts shew that the balance of receipts over expenditure for the year was £65 13s 9d. Actually the position was more favourable than this figure indicates. At the beginning of December, there was such a substantial balance at our credit, that it was decided, in consultation with the Hon. Editor, to pay in advance to the printers as much as possible of the _cost of printing and despatching the Proceedingspublished in the year—those for 1953. The Proceedings were then about to be issued and they were estimated to be likely to cost between £250 and 280; £250 were accordingly paid to our printers. The Hon. Auditor however pressed for a firm figure so as to account for all expenditure incurred dur- ing the year, within the year.. He was accordingly advised to take the higher figure, which he did. The amount shewn under this head is therefore £284 3s. 6d., which includes £4 3s. 6d. carried over from the previous year. The bill has since conie in and amounted to only £230 16s. Od., £19 4s. Od. being held to our credit against subsequent payments. The actual excess of receipts over expenditure in the year was therefore 449 4s. Od. more, or £114 17s. 9d. Receipts from sub- scriptions have increased by about £20, due to increased membership; while those from sales of publications were some £12 above average. On the other hand receipts from refunded income tax fell slightly, in spite of an increase in the number of those covenanting, owing to the reduction in the standard rate of income tax from 9s. 6d. to 9s. Od. in the pound. As regards expenditure, we have had some £12 of extraordinary expenditure; and' the gap between receipts and expenditure on excursions (including printing and postage) increased owing to four instead of three excursions having been arranged for the benefit of members. The cost of stationery seems to be steadily rising; and there are indications that we wig lose the benefits of the covenant scheme. The net number of covenanters, mainly owing to the President's appeal in 1952, has now risen to 103, but the whole benefit of the rise will not be felt till the current year. It is doubtful however whether ther&will be much advantage from the rise as the standard rate of income tax is to be again reduced—to 8/6 in the £. If we do lose this source of income, our finances will be seriously affected. If we continue to receive it, prospects may be said to be favourable. But caution in expenditure is I think necessary, till the position is clarified by the Income Tax authorities.
