NOTES 233 ReevesandGreaves. In his interesting paper on this subject," Dr. Cane touches on, but does not make clear, the relationship between the two terms. Reeveis the modern descendant in the Midlands and the South of Old English (ge)refa, which is not to be confused with greave. In (ge)refathe g was pronounced like a y; the prefix disappeared and the word became revein Middle English. The corresponding modern form in Scotland and Northern England is grievewhich derives from Old Northumbrian *grdfa, the northern equivalent of the West Saxon (ge)refa. The initial g was hard and gave Middle English greve. A third form, with approximately the same meaning, is found in the Scandinavian counties, Middle English greyve, from Old Norse grOfe. In South Yorkshire in the sixteenth century, the English greveand the Scandinavian greyvewere pronounced very much alike and their spellings became confused. Both terms had given rise to surnames, the English grevenow surviving as Greeves, Greaves or Grieves, the Scandinavian greyveusually as Graves. The Rotherham greaveis a survival of Old Northumbrian *grdfa. In Suffolk, the normal English form was (ge)rila which is found as reveside by side with the Scandinavian greyve. In a Suffolk document of the reign of Henry III in the Colchester Cartu- lary we find Hubert le Greyueand in 1317 in the Suffolk Fines William le Greive, whilst in the 1327 Subsidy Roll we have both Guy le Reve and Adam le Reuesson. Both forms still survived in the 1524 Subsidy Roll : John Greveand John Greyvethe elder. The Bungay reevederives from Old English (ge)dfa. P. H. REANEY, LITT.D., PH.D. A SeventeenthCenturyToken.
