STANFORD HOSTS 2017 PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 55th-annual Pac-12 Wrestling Championships will be held on Sunday, February 26 at Maples Pavilion, hosted by Stanford University. All six teams bring a wealth of tough competition to the table, with two teams ranked in the top 25 nationally and at least one Pac-12 wrestler ranked in the top 20 for all but two weight classes. The host Cardinal, ranked No. 17 (InterMat), are looking to win their frst league championship, while the 12th-ranked look to win their frst league championship since 2006. OREGON STATE looks to defend its title and run its string to six straight championships. It would be the longest such streak since Arizona State posted seven straight titles from 1985-1991. BOISE STATE and CSU BAKERSFIELD have several redshirt freshmen that have excelled this season and look to compete for an individual title. A veteran CAL POLY team will seek an individual title for the frst time since 2013. Pac-12 Wrestling Championships/Feb. 21, 2017 3 2016 PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIPS RECAP

OREGON STATE successfully defended its championship, winning its ffth-consecutive Pac-12 title in a year where 25 Pac-12 wrestlers earned berths to the NCAA Championships. The Beavers, ARIZONA STATE and STANFORD each had six national qualifers while while CSU BAKERSFIELD had fve and CAL POLY had two.

Pac-12 Wrestler of the Year Amarveer Dhesi fnished ffth overall in the class at NCAAs. Stanford’s Connor Schram placed eighth in the 125 class. Pac-12 Wrestling Freshman/Newcomer of the Year Joey McKenna of Stanford took third place overall and became the frst freshman in program history to earn All-America accolades.

The Beavers claimed their ffth-straight title at the Pac-12 Championships despite only having one individual champion. That one champion, Dhesi, was also named the Outstanding Wrestler of the Meet. Head coach Jim Zalesky earned his ffth-consecutive Pac-12 Wrestling Coach of the Year honor and sixth in the past seven seasons as the Beavers claimed their ffth-straight Pac-12 title. The win marked the seventh Conference title in Zalesky’s 10 seasons at the helm. Stanford (Schram, McKenna and Jim Wilson) and Arizona State (Dalton Brady, Blake Stauffer and Josh DaSilveira) each claimed three individual titles while Boise State won two (Chris Castillo and Geordan Martinez) and Bryce Hammond claimed CSU Bakersfeld’s lone title.
