Biological Sciences Comparative Studies in the Functional Morphology of Lizard Feeding: Kinematics, Behavior, and Biomechanics (148pp.) Director of Dissertation: Stephen M. Reilly In fish, mammals, and birds the functional morphology of the feeding apparatus has been well studied. However in lizards (non-ophidian squamates), much less is known about the functional variation that may result from their diverse cranial morphologies. Here, I present four functional studies of the lizard feeding apparatus. Initially, the feeding kinematics of lizards were quantified and used to test two existing models of prey transport for all amniotes. To do so, I devised a method to quantitatively test for differences in kinematic phases of mouth opening. This method, slope analysis, demonstrated that feeding kinematics were highly variable intra- and interspecifically and that one model accurately characterized prey transport in lizards. Next, variation in feeding behavior was quantified to understand how members of two clades (Iguania, Autarchoglossa) process their prey. Iguanian lizards processed their prey using mostly a palatal crushing behavior while autarchoglossans used puncture crushing. Iguanians also engaged in significantly fewer processing behaviors per feeding bout. Autarchoglossans processed prey extensively and interspersed processing behaviors with transport behaviors. In fact, three behaviors, puncture crushing, prey transport and the total number of behaviors, are coevolving based on independent contrasts analysis. Interestingly, patterns in feeding behavior closely paralleled the dichotomy seen in foraging mode between these clades. Because feeding behavior and foraging mode are likely related, I investigated how feeding morphology and foraging mode evolve in a group of closely related species. I tested the hypothesis that feeding biomechanics and performance coevolve with foraging mode in Kalahari lacertids. The head length and width variables supported this hypothesis; however, the remaining variables and biting performance did not. Given the extreme dependence of all Kalahari lizards on termites, it is likely that this dietary constraint prevents morphological specialization. Finally, the tradeoffs between lizard skull form and biting performance are explored. Lizards exceeded predictions regarding the position of the most posterior tooth and muscle resultant. Head width and depth were highly correlated with biting performance within species, however among species, lever mechanics were better predictors. Consequently further studies of functional tradeoffs are required to understand how they might influence lizard ecology and evolution. Approved: Stephen M. (Received: 14 June 2015 ; Accepted: 15 July 2016 ) There are several papers related to the split of the genus Eumeces sensu lato into four distinct genera ( Eumeces sensu stricto Wiegmann, 1834; Plestiodon Duméril & Bibron, 1839; Mesoscincus Griffith, Ngo & Murphy, 2000 and Eurylepis Blyth, 1854). From these, three important ones stand out. The genus has undergone extensive taxonomic changes. There was an initial morphologcial split which identified the correct four groups but failed to get the correct nomenclatures. These errors were later corrected. In a chronological order, Novoeumeces suggested as a new name for the schneiderii group and subsequently re- changed to the genus Eumeces sensu stricto. North American-clade is now considered as Plestiodon . The name Eumeces (sensu stricto) was retained for the group close to the type species ( Eumeces pavimentatus ) which is part of the African-Central Asian clade. There are now only five species of Eumeces left. The others (old Eumeces ) are now found in Eurylepis (2 species), Mesoscincus (3 species) and Plestiodon (47 species). A detailed story of these changes plus a brief comparison of current four genera based on mentioned morphological characters in the literatures are discussed in this paper.

An investigation on the status of lizards in this Province was carried out from June 2010 to September 2011. A total of 73 specimens were collected and identified. The collected specimens represented four families, 10 genera, and 14 species and subspecies, including Agamidae: Laudakia nupta nupta, Laudakia caucasia and Trapelus lessonae, Gekkonidae: Cyrtopodion scabrum, Asaccus kurdistanensis, Lacertidae: Eremias montanus, Eremias sp. (1) and Eremias sp. (2) (unknown taxa which may be related to E. persica complex), Apathya cappadocica urmiana, A. c. muhtari, Lacerta media media and Ophisops elegans, Scinicidae: Eumeces schneideri princeps and Trachylepis aurata transcaucasica. With respect to the data which was reported by Rastegar-Pouyani et al. (2008) and Anderson (1999) Eremias sp. (1) and Eremias sp. ABSTRACT Food habits among sexes of Ameiva ameiva were evaluated by the frequency of occurrence, trophic dominance, and diet similarity methods during periods of rain and drought in a tropophic forest in La Llanada Vieja, Sucre State, Venezuela. 431 prey items were identified in 20 stomachs analyzed. Diet for both periods showed a high frequency for Coleoptera, plant material, Isoptera, Nematoda, Araneae, and reptilian rests. Males and females showed differences in diet during the climatic periods analyzed. Females showed higher stomach volumes values than males. Results suggest the species is mainly insectivorous. RESUMEN Se evaluaron los hábitos alimentarios de Ameiva ameiva, mediante el método de frecuencia de aparición, dominancia trófica y similitud de la dieta entre sexos, abarcando los periodos de lluvia y sequía. La captura se realizó en un bosque tropófilo de los alrededores de la Llanada Vieja, estado Sucre, Venezuela.

[email protected] Resum S'ha investigat la diversitat morfològica en 129 espècies de lacèrtids i la seva relació amb l'ecologia, per mitjà de mètodes comparatius, utilitzant set variables morfomètriques. La mida corporal és la variable més important, determinant un gradient entre espècies de petita i gran mida independentment evolucionades al llarg de la filogènia dels lacèrtids. Aquesta variable està forta i positivament correlacionada amb les altres, emmascarant els patrons de diversitat morfològica. Anàlisis multivariants en les variables ajustades a la mida corporal mostren una covariació negativa entre les mides relatives de la cua i les extremitats. Remarcablement, les espècies arborícoles i semiarborícoles (Takydromus i el clade africà equatorial) han aparegut dues vegades independentment durant l'evolució dels lacèrtids i es caracteritzen per cues extremadament llargues i extremitats anteriors relativament llargues en comparació a les posteriors. El llangardaix arborícola i planador Holaspis, amb la seva cua curta, constitueix l’única excepció. Un altre cas de convergència ha estat trobat en algunes espècies que es mouen dins de vegetació densa o herba (Tropidosaura, Lacerta agilis, Takydromus amurensis o Zootoca) que presenten cues llargues i extremitats curtes. Al contrari, les especies que viuen en deserts, estepes o matollars amb escassa vegetació aïllada dins grans espais oberts han desenvolupat extremitats posteriors llargues i anteriors curtes per tal d'assolir elevades velocitats i maniobrabilitat. Aquest és el cas especialment de Acanthodactylus i Eremias Abstract Morphologic diversity was studied in 129 species of lacertid lizards and their relationship with ecology by means of comparative analysis on seven linear morphometric measurements.
