    “The Thing Behind the Thing”: The role and influence of religious leaders on the use of traditional practices of acknowledgement in Uganda1 Joanna R. Quinn2 Review of Faith and International Affairs 8.1 (Spring 2010): forthcoming. The use of traditional practices to socially acknowledge past abuses is not yet fully understood. In places like Uganda, it has recently become fashionable to urge the use of traditional mechanisms. Yet little is understood about how or why such practices work or whether their use ought to be supported. As one piece of a larger study of traditional practices in Uganda, this paper considers the role and influence of Uganda’s religious leaders on the use of traditional practices. It considers the stands six major faith groups on the use of such traditional practices, before turning to their consideration of the use of neo-traditional practices. Religious Landscape The religious make-up of Uganda is as follows, according to 2002 census data: - Roman Catholic 41.9% - Protestant 42% (includes Anglican 35.9%, Pentecostal 4.6%, Seventh Day Adventist 1.5%) - Muslim 12.1% - Other 3.1% - none 0.9%3 1 A paper prepared for Canadian Political Science Association Annual Meeting, 28 May 2009, Ottawa, Canada. Awolich outh Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement that ended the deadly 6-year civil war is in jeopardy, both because the parties to it are back to brinkmanship over a number S of mildly contentious issues in the agreement and because the implementation process has skipped over fundamental st eps in a rush to form a unity government. It seems that the parties, the mediators and guarantors of the agreement wereof the mind that a quick formation of the Revitalized Government of National Unity (RTGoNU) would start to build trust between the leaders and to procure a public buy-in. Unfortunately, a unity government that is devoid of capacity and political will is unable to address the fundamentals of peace, namely, security, basic services, and justice and accountability. The result is that the citizens at all levels of society are disappointed in RTGoNU, with many taking the law, order, security, and survival into their own hands due to the ubiquitous absence of government in their everyday lives. The country is now at more risk of becoming undone at its seams than any other time since the liberation war ended in 2005. The current st ate of affairs in the country has been long in the making.

Tania Murphy, a member of the Cathedral Girls’ Choir, has recently returned to St Paul’s Cathedral, London, to record a CD with St Paul's Cathedral Choir and choristers from other UK cathedrals. The Diamond Fund for Choristers CD will be released on March 17. This Fund was launched last April at a concert in St Paul’s to mark the Friends of Cathedral Music’s diamond jubilee. The concert brought together choristers [email protected] Page !1 February 11 representing 60 cathedrals along with the choir of St Paul’s for the first time ever Tania was selected by St Anne’s Master of the Choristers David Stevens to represent the Cathedral at the concert in St Paul’s on April 27 last year. The concert was presented by Classic FM’s Aled Jones and Alexander Armstrong, and held in the presence of HRH The Duchess of Gloucester. After her visit to St Paul’s, Tania said she had formed new friendships with choristers from different parts of the country who shared the same interests, and described it as ‘definitely an experience which I will never forget!’ Tania has sung with the St Anne’s Choir for almost four years. “I love being a chorister of St Anne's Cathedral as I have always been intrigued by the concept of choral music and the resonating sound of the music in such a big cathedral as St Anne's,” she said. “Being a chorister has given me so many opportunities such as singing in Puccini's opera Turandot, singing with the St Anne's choir on a tour of Paris, and of course this wonderful opportunity of being able to sing in St Paul's Cathedral, London.” [email protected] Page !2 February 11 !     th Volume 1, Issue 18 19 July 2009 The Episcopal Church USA ‘Walks Apart’ from the Anglican Communion The Episcopal Church USA (TEC) concluded its triennial legislative General Convention on Friday, 17th July 2009, in Anaheim, California. During the ten-day meeting of their governing body, Deputies and Bishops passed two resolutions clearly signaling TEC’s desire to “walk apart” from the Anglican Communion. The Convention passed by a 2-1 margin resolutions permitting the election and consecration as Bishops of practicing homosexuals as well as the collection and development of rites for the blessing of same-sex unions. The Convention further permitted Bishops to authorize rites for the blessing of same-sex unions in their dioceses. Moreover, the Convention, when given an opportunity to uphold the uniqueness of Christ, defeated such a resolution. Many in the worldwide Anglican Communion, especially in the UK, who were in denial about the depth of apostasy by the Episcopal Church have acknowledged, with these resolutions, the departure of TEC from the historical and Biblical faith of Anglicanism and recognize that TEC has chosen to “walk apart” from the Anglican Communion. “In Windsor’s language, Bishop N.T. (Tom) Wright, the influential evangelical they have chosen to ‘walk Bishop of Durham, England, and principal author of the apart’.” Bishop N.T. Windsor Report – a report written in response to the Wright, Durham, England Primates request to address the torn fabric of the Anglican Communion after TEC’s consecration of a practicing homosexual as Bishop of New Hampshire – concluded in a 15th July (London) Times Editorial that these decisions mark “a clear break with the rest of the Anglican Communion.” Bishop Wright continued, “Both the bishops and deputies (lay and clergy) of TEC knew exactly what they were doing.

    Monday 10 November 2014 Bishop Ted Luscombe celebrates his 90th Birthday today. Bishop Ted was Bishop of Brechin 1975-90 and Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church 1985-90. He ordained our current Bishop Nigel as Deacon and Priest in St Paul’s Cathedral Dundee 1976/77. Sunday 23 November 2014 Bishop Nigel will be Licencing the Reverend Tracy Dowling as Chaplain (Assistant Curate) of St Paul’s Cathedral Dundee at the 11am Cathedral Eucharist for the Feast of Christ the King, together with Carole Spink who will be Admitted and Licenced as a Reader. Tracy comes from the Merton Priory Team Ministry in south London after a career with HMRC. Carole is completing her training at the Scottish Episcopal Institute and will also serve at the Cathedral. Tuesday 25 November 2014 The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, is making a visit to the Dundee Centre of Mission St Luke’s Downfield, Dundee on Tuesday morning. The Centre, launched this September, is a partnership between the Diocese and Church Army, aiming to pioneer fresh ways of doing church for the unchurched. The Archbishop will meet local people connected with the project, Craig Dowling, Pioneer Evangelist and the Reverend Kerry Dixon, Priest Missioner. Bishop Nigel will welcome the Archbishop to our diocese and the Primus, Bishop David Chillingworth who is hosting the Archbishop during his visit to the Scottish Episcopal Church.
