(CPG:PM) has announced the opening of Asian Century Center, a Php1-billion green office building in Bonifacio Global City this December. The 21-storey tower developed in partnership with Asian Carmakers is expected to contribute an additional 26,913 square meters of leasable space and about Php468 million in annual revenues to CPG’s leasing portfolio once fully leased out. Asian Century Center is strategically located at 27th Street on the 3rd and 4th Avenues of BGC, close to Bonifacio High Street, Shangri La Fort and the Mind Museum. • The Ideology of the Dual City: the Modernist Ethic in the Corporate Development of Makati City, Metro Manila
bs_bs_banner Volume 37.1 January 2013 165–85 International Journal of Urban and Regional Research DOI:10.1111/j.1468-2427.2011.01100.x The Ideology of the Dual City: The Modernist Ethic in the Corporate Development of Makati City, Metro Manila MARCO GARRIDO Abstractijur_1100 165..185 Postcolonial cities are dual cities not just because of global market forces, but also because of ideological currents operating through local real-estate markets — currents inculcated during the colonial period and adapted to the postcolonial one. Following Abidin Kusno, we may speak of the ideological continuity behind globalization in the continuing hold of a modernist ethic, not only on the imagination of planners and builders but on the preferences of elite consumers for exclusive spaces. Most of the scholarly work considering the spatial impact of corporate-led urban development has situated the phenomenon in the ‘global’ era — to the extent that the spatial patterns resulting from such development appear wholly the outcome of contemporary globalization. The case of Makati City belies this periodization. By examining the development of a corporate master-planned new city in the 1950s rather than the 1990s, we can achieve a better appreciation of the influence of an enduring ideology — a modernist ethic — in shaping the duality of Makati. The most obvious thing in some parts of Greater Manila is that the city is Little America, New York, especially so in the new exurbia of Makati where handsome high-rise buildings, supermarkets, apartment-hotels and shopping centers flourish in a setting that could well be Palm Beach or Beverly Hills.

  • Fort Bonifacio Global City: a New Standard for Urban Design in Southeast Asia
Sara Liss-Katz 9 FORT BONIFACIO GLOBAL CITY: A NEW STANDARD FOR URBAN DESIGN IN SOUTHEAST ASIA Sara Liss-Katz Introduction "Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men's blood and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will never die, but long after we are gone will be living thing, asserting itself with ever-growing insistency. Remember that our sons and grandsons are going to do things that would stagger us. Let your watchword be order and your beacon beauty." (Daniel H. Burnham, 1907) o wrote Daniel Burnham in the opening years of this Scentury when he helped set the framework for the expansion of Old Manila (Fig. 1). As we approach the beginning of the next century we architects and urban designers are required to bring our expertise to bear in an entirely new environment. We are challenged by massive scale, fast pace and complexity of development projects in the economic boom of Southeast Asia. Figure 1 Master Plan for Manila, Daniel Burnham The master plan developed by Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum (HOK), pro vides a broad vision, as well as the detailed plan ning, urban design and landscape guidelines ne cessary to make it a reality (Fig. 2). Our objective, Sara Liss-Katz is Senior Vice President and Design Director of was defined through a Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum Planning and Landscape Architecture collaborative team effort, office in San Francisco, California. Her degrees include a Master of involving a multi-discipli Landscape Architecture from the University of Michigan and a nary team which included Bachelor ofArts in Fine Arts from the University of California at architects, urban designers, Berkeley.
