Hall of Fame Biography Carlisle Floyd Carlisle Floyd is one of the foremost composers and librettists of opera in the United States. Born in 1926, Floyd earned degrees in piano and composition Syracuse University. He began his teaching career in 1947 at Florida State University. He is co-founder with David Gockley of the Houston Opera Studio. Floyd’s operas are regularly performed in the US and Europe. He first achieved national prominence with the New York premiere of his opera, Susannah, by the New York City Opera in 1956. Of Mice and Men is Floyd’s other most often performed work. Based on the Steinbeck novel, it was commissioned by the Ford Foundation and was given its premiere by the Seattle Opera in 1970. Floyd’s more recent operas, Bilby’s Doll (1976) and Willie Stark (1981), were both commissioned and produced by the Houston Grand Opera. Floyd’s latest opera, Cold Sassy Tree received its premiere at Houston Grand Opera in 2000. In 1993, the New York premiere of Floyd’s orchestral song cycle, Citizen of Paradise was given by the leading mezzo-soprano of the Metropolitan Opera, Suzanne Mentzer. Floyd has been the recipient of a number of honors and awards. Most recently, he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2001) and awarded the National Medal of Arts in a ceremony at the White House (2004). -

Monroe Library, Loyola University New Orleans Title Norman Treigle Papers Date 1940s-1970s Extent 23 boxes, 34 audiotape reels, 24.73 linear feet Name of Creator Norman Treigle, (1927-1975) Administrative/BiographiCal History Adanelle Wilfred (Norman) Treigle was born in New Orleans on March 6, 1927, the youngest of five children born to Wilfred and Claudia (Fischer) Treigle. His introduction to music was through his mother, who played both piano and organ, and his singing career began as a boy soprano in a church choir. At 16, “Addie” graduated from Alcee Fortier High School where he had been active in musical and dramatic presentations. He served in the U.S. Navy during the last two years of World War II and returned to New Orleans in 1945. A career in business was eclipsed by music as the young bass-baritone performed in churches and synagogues and with musical and theatrical groups. He married his childhood sweetheart, Loraine Siegel, in 1946, and the following year their son, Norman, was born. 2 Determined to pursue a musical career, Treigle entered Loyola University where he studied with Elisabeth Wood for seven years. He won the New Orleans Opera House Auditions of the Air in 1947 and made his operatic debut with the company as the Duke of Verona in Roméo et Juliette. -

(Production photos by Lynn Lane) By William Albright HOUSTON — Carlisle Floyd turns 90 on June 11, but Houston Grand Opera started celebrating his birthday early. For the fifth time, the company commissioned a new opera from him. And it gave the resulting work — Prince of Players, a two-hour chamber opera in two acts — a popularly priced but handsomely staged three-performance, world-premiere run in Wortham Theater Center’s Cullen Theater. But the icing on the cake came on March 5, when the opening-night audience erupted in loud, prolonged appreciation as the composer joined the cast, conductor, and production team for onstage bows. Carlisle Floyd was 29 when he introduced ‘Susannah.’ Giuseppe Verdi astonished the world with his still-vibrant creativity at ages 73 and 79 with Otello and Falstaff, respectively. Prince of Players is no Falstaff (what is?), but the work, HGO’s 59th world premiere since 1973, is a remarkable achievement by a composer who burst onto the operatic scene in 1955 with Susannah and hasn’t written a new opera since Cold Sassy Tree was launched here 16 years ago. Floyd’s 14th music drama is dappled with the lyricism that has been a hallmark of his proudly accessible style from the beginning. -

THE GIRL OF THE GOLDEN WEST PERFORMER BIOGRAPHIES Deborah Voight (Minnie) Deborah Voigt is hailed by the worldʼs critics and audiences as todayʼs foremost dramatic soprano. The former Adler Fellow and Merola Opera Program alumna made her main stage debut in Don Carlos and has since returned to the Company in nine subsequent productions, most recently as Amelia Anckarström in Un Ballo in Maschera (2006). In addition to the role of Amelia in the 1990 production of Un Ballo in Maschera, her other performances at San Francisco Opera include Anna (Nabucco), Elisabeth (Tannhäuser), the title role of Ariadne auf Naxos, and Sieglinde (Die Walküre); these performances in La Fanciulla del West mark her role debut as Minnie. Voigt is a regular artist at the Metropolitan Opera—recent appearances there include the roles of Chrysothemis (Elektra), Senta (Der Fliegende Holländer), Isolde (Tristan und Isolde), Leonora (La Forza del Destino), the Empress (Die Frau ohne Schatten), Sieglinde, and the title roles of Tosca, Aida, Die Ägyptische Helena, and La Gioconda. She also performs regularly with Vienna State Opera (Tosca, the title roles of Salome and Ariadne auf Naxos, the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier, Isolde, Brünnhilde in Siegfried); Paris Opera (Senta, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth); the Royal Opera, Covent Garden (Ariadne, the Empress in Die Frau ohne Schatten, and the title role of Die Ägyptische Helena); Lyric Opera of Chicago (Salome, Isolde, Sieglinde, Tosca), Barcelonaʼs Gran Teatre del Liceu (Maddalena in Andrea Chénier, the title role of La Gioconda, Isolde) and the Salzburg Festival (the title role of Die Liebe der Danae).
