Born on 3 July 1969, Naik Digendra Kumar belonged to the 2nd Battalion of the Rajputana Rifles regiment of the Indian Army. He is also a recipient of Maha Vir Chakra, Sena Medal and many other medals for his exemplary valor. He was one of the best commandos of his time in the Indian Army. He had acquired the skill to hit a target on the basis of only sound. After completing his training, he was posted at Jammu & Kashmir. He was sent to Sri Lanka for ‘Operation Pawan’ in Indian Peace Keeping Force in 1987 where his bravery was widely appreciated. When the Kargil war was on, Naik Digendra Kumar was commander of the Light Machine Gun Group during his company’s assault on Tololing hill in Drass Sector. Their objective was to capture the fortified enemy post which was located at an altitude of over 15000 feet. On 10 June 1999, there was deadly silence in the hills except the sound of the blasts. There was snow and snow all around. They knew that probably they won’t get back alive. It was a dangerous mission after all. But they remained undeterred and readily risked their lives for the nation. After 14 hours of hard labour, they reached the top of Tololing. Pakistani army had 11 bunkers on the Tololing hill top. Digendra Kumar was to target first and the last bunkers. Rest of the battalion targeted the remaining 9 bunker. On 13 June 1999, the bombardment at Tololing led to heavy casualties. Naik Digendra Kumar too was hit by a bullet in his left arm. He remained undaunted and kept firing with one hand and brought down effective and accurate Light Machine Gun fire on the enemy. He then gave an effective covering fire, while his own troops attacked the enemy position. Despite being seriously wounded, he kept his platoon motivated. At last, the task was accomplished due to his efforts. The role of Naik Digendra Kumar in the Kargil conflict was very crucial. With great difficulty, Digendra Kumar put the Indian tri-colour flag on 13 June 1999 at four o’clock in the morning. The Indian Army reached Tololing peak in the early hours of morning and found heaps of dead soldiers. The Indian tri-colour flag was hoisted and Digendra Kumar lied besides it in an unconscious state. He had the head of Major Anwar Khan of the Pakistan Army in his hand. Digendra Kumar was then carried to Military Hospital. He thus was awarded MVC at the age of 30 for his courage in Kargil war. Although Kumar was hit by a bullet in his left arm, he kept firing on the enemy with his light machine gun. He was responsible for killing 48 Pakistani soldiers single - handedly and received total 18 bullets on his body armour. Such brave soldiers should be respected and loved. The nation is proud of their efforts..

My Kargil War Hero The Overview July 26, it was on this day 22 years ago that the Indian Army recaptured all the Indian posts in Kargil that were captured by the Pakistan Army. Since then July 26 has been observed annually, as Kargil Vijay Diwas, to honour the supreme scarifies and the exemplary courage of the Brave Hearts who laid down their lives safeguarding the frontiers of our motherland. After the Lahore Summit in 1999 the diplomatic tensions seemed to ease. But the sense of optimism seemed to be short-lived as in May 1999 Pakistan Paramilitary forces and Karshmir insurgents captured deserted but strategic posts in the Himalayan heights of Kargil. These posts were vacated by the Indian Army on the account of the inhospitable winter and were supposed to be reoccupied in spring. The Pakistani forces positioned themselves in locations that enable them to bring NH1 within its range of artillery fire. Once the scale of Pakistani incursion was realised , the Indian Army quickly moralised around 2,00,000 troops and gave a buffeting response. Backed by Indian Air Force, Indian Army launched Operation Vijay and captured the curial points of Tiger Hill and Tololing in Drass. The Army declared the mission successful on July 26, 1999; since it has been marked as the Kargil Vijay Diwas in India. Remembering the War Heroes India’s victory at the heights of the Kargil was a hard earned one. The victory came at the cost of the several supreme sacrifices by the Sons of the Soil. Captain Vikram Batra, (13 JAK RIF) Captain Vikram Batra of the 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifle immortalised himself by fighting Pakistani forces during the Kargil war in 1999 at the age of 24.

No. 07/2018 www.indianarmy.gov.in July 2018 KARGIL VIJAY DIWAS BATTLE OF TOLOLING Saga of Sheer Guts & Unmatched Courage “Sir, I am on Tololing Top” This was the simple message which Col MB Ravindranath gave to the Brigade Commander on the cold morning of 13 Jun 1999. Tololing had been captured. 2 RAJPUTANA RIFLES lost 10 of the bravehearts. This victory at Tololing changed the course of the Kargil War. It eliminated a major enemy threat. It was due to the bravery of 2 RAJPUTANA RIFLES and 18 GRENADIERS that Tololing was swiftly captured. We salute all the officers and jawans who won us Tololing. Maj Rajesh Adhikari, Maj Vivek Gupta and Naik Digender Kumar received Mahavir Chakra, the Nation’s second highest gallantry award. Here is the story of the battle fought on the night of 12/ 13 Jun 1999. Towering over Drass town, Tololing is the highest feature in the Kargil-Drass Sector overlooking NH 1A. If not recaptured, this would have been against our idea of territorial integrity and would have been against interest of 2.75 Lakh fellow Indians across Zojila. This was unacceptable to the nation. The Battle of Tololing began on 20 May 1999, when the task of recapturing the strategic location was given to 18 GRENADIERS. The enemy was entrenched at the peak, was able to observe own movements and was effectively interfering in our movement. Regardless, the brave 18 GRENADIERS carried on. With near vertical climb, every kilo of load mattered, hence the 2 kg food packets were discarded in favour of more ammunition.

  • Kargil Vijay Diwas
Kargil Vijay Diwas Kargil Vijay Diwas: Today (26/07/2021) marks the completion of 22 years of the Kargil War, which is unanimously celebrated as the Kargil Diwas. On this day, the heroes of the Indian Army are remembered who lost their lives back in 1999 but ensured India's win over Pakistan. In a war that lasted over 60 days in Ladakh's Kargil, India ousted the neighbouring nation's military forces and took back control of the high outposts in the region. On the eve of Kargil Diwas yesterday, the epic battles of Tololing, Tiger Hill and others were recalled and 559 lamps were lit in a tribute to the martyrs at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass area of Ladakh as events to mark the 22nd Kargil Vijay Diwas commenced on Sunday in the presence of top military officers, family members of the army personnel and others. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged the countrymen to salute the brave hearts of Kargil on July 26, when the nation will mark Kargil Vijay Diwas. Hailing the Indian armed forces, the prime minister said that the Kargil war is a symbol of valour and discipline of our security forces which the entire world has witnessed. He said that India will celebrate this day as 'Amrut Mahotsav'. Why is Kargil Diwas celebrated? On July 26, 1999, India successfully took command of the high outposts. The Kargil war was fought for more than 60 days and ended on this day when the Pakistani army took advantage of the melting snow and - betraying the bilateral understanding of both the nations that the post would remain unattended during the winter season - took command of the high outposts of India.
