Mac McFarland CEO

Mac McFarland is CEO of Luminant, a competitive power generation subsidiary of Corp., with activities including plant, mine, wholesale marketing and trading, and development operations.

McFarland and his team of 4,300 Luminant employees help power Texas through the safe operation and commercial optimization of over 15,400 megawatts of generation in Texas, including 2,300 MW of nuclear-powered and 8,000 MW of -fueled generation capacity. Luminant recently completed a 2,200-MW, $3.25 billion construction program of new coal generation equipped with advanced clean-air emissions technology to help meet Texas’ growing power needs. At the same time, the company implemented an environmental control technology retrofit program across its existing coal units. These investments have decreased key emissions from the coal fleet by more than 20 percent while increasing coal generation capacity by 37 percent. With activities netting roughly 30 million tons of Texas a year to supply the coal generation, Luminant has restored more than 73,000 acres and planted more than 33 million trees, setting the national standard in mining reclamation. The company is also one of the largest purchasers of wind-generated electricity in Texas and the nation.

Previously, McFarland served as Luminant’s chief commercial officer. In that role, he and his team were responsible for optimizing the dispatch and value of the company’s generation fleet; managing the commodity, transportation and emissions requirements for its operating assets; driving asset management, trading and portfolio management in ERCOT; providing oversight of Luminant’s state and federal wholesale market design; and leading generation and development activities.

Prior to joining EFH, McFarland held leadership roles in the finance, mergers and acquisitions, and marketing and trading organizations at Exelon for nearly 10 years. Prior to Exelon, he held commercial finance and engineering positions at technology and architect-engineering-construction firms.

McFarland holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Virginia Tech and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Delaware where he was a Bertuch Fellow. He received a professional engineering license from the state of Delaware. In 2012, he completed the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Reactor Technology Course for Utility Executives. McFarland also serves on the board of the Perot Museum of Nature and Science and on the advisory board of the Dallas Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Married with two daughters, McFarland and his family live in Dallas.
