CORPORATE TRANSFORMATION By Moize Hussain Enterprise Resource Planning or more commonly known as ERP in BSRM has been described by those who have successfully lived through it as a welcome change. For us the time to live change is NOW after nearly a year of implementation. Those among us who ask for a justification for a change usually want to know what this change entails. A change of any kind usually entails the degree to which a person allows it. In ERP the Change does not have a limit. The more you use it, understand it the more change you can make. Each of us will be affected by this change because this is about transforming the business of doing business. F&A, Costing, SCM, Manufacturing, Maintenance, Inventory & Sales are now integrated on a single platform – all of us will need to roll up our sleeves to become part with this transformation by ensuring that a) making sure that we change first, b) insist on others reporting to you to make the change, c) encourage your peers, d) become the change though leadership & advocacy, e) help by providing feedback for managing the change, and f) live it by example. The higher up you are the higher should be your expectations. Reliability of information, accuracy of what we report, currency of our figures, ease of access and availability is the promise of this system working hand in hand with our people and processes. The responsibility starts with YOU - to make it possible you have to transform. Then is ERP a panacea for a company?– if you answered yes you would be wrong. Panacea if defined by what I have described above can only be achieved if you allow this transformation. In my judgment anyone can transform if you do a simple Moize Hussain’s career spans more than two decades with Fortune 100 companies in the United States. • Spelling Bees and the United States National Spelling Bee
Out of Many, One: Spelling Bees and the United States National Spelling Bee RACHEL McARTHUR University of Toronto [email protected] THE SPELLING BEE IS A PARADIGMATICALLY AMERICAN INSTITUTION. Its origins are evident linguistically: ‘spelling bee’ is a sterling example of a diachronic Americanism, a term ‘coined in America, but [which has] been adopted wherever else in the English-speaking world [it is] applicable’ (Cassidy and Hall 2001, 213). The cultural practice of spelling bees emerged in the United States within a nexus of social, political, pedagogical and linguistic factors roughly linked to the emergence of American English as a unitary category tied to America’s political identity after the Revolutionary War. Representations of spelling bees in nineteenth century American literature reflect this linguistic identity in process of negotiation. In the twentieth century, spelling bees became media events and the unofficial, community-oriented practice of spelling bees was organized and officialised in the form of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. In popular culture, the National Bee1 has become inextricable from a specific version of American identity, in which hard work leads to material success. As such, its focus is less on reinforcing and consolidating orthographical norms than on the perceived pedagogical—and, more importantly, social—benefits of the difficulty of performing, and, more specifically, learning to perform, those norms. For Our Mutual Benefit: ‘Bees’ as a Cultural Practice The Americanism ‘spelling bee’ is, more fundamentally, a composite: a particular iteration of the American use of the term ‘bee’ to form compounds with verbal nouns. While most of the other terms thus created, such as husking-, paring-, quilting-, or raising-bee, have fallen by the wayside, ‘spelling bee’ has proven itself both highly persistent and highly portable.

FEBRUARY/March 2017 Volume 15, issue 6 Christian Hills School A Ministry of Christian Hills Church by Daniel White, 8th Grade On February 14, Abraham Lincoln came to our school! Well, it wasn’t actually him but a person impersonating him to tell us about the life of Abraham Lincoln. The man came from a company called “Historical Perspectives for Children”. They are an organization that has actors go to schools around the country and impersonate many different historical figures throughout history. The man who portrayed Lincoln changed his appearance to represent Lincoln’s life from his youth to adulthood. He was very interactive with the crowd and answered many questions. He even got some students to square dance! I hope the school will schedule events like this again in the future. It’s something to look forward to. T HE P RINCIPAL’ S C ORNER...
