Media Contact: Daisy Walia 732-688-9401 Jun 25, 2018 – Continuing its quest for the best speller in the community, the 2018 South Asian Spelling Bee (www.SouthAsianSpellingBee.com) traveled to Texas and New Jersey this past weekend with stops in Dallas and New Brunswick. With a huge turnout this year, the Bee attracted some top talent as well as young and new spellers that competed for the coveted prizes and titles. At the Dallas Regional, current Scripps National Champion and South Asian Spelling Bee alumnus Karthik Nemmani was at hand to interact with spellers and parents. Having attended the South Asian Spelling Bee for 5 years, Nemmani had specific insights about his experience at the event and its contribution to his success. “The South Asian Spelling Bee gave me exposure and a competitive edge that other bees lacked,” he told a standing room only crowd at the regional. Sohum Sukhatankar (12) of Dallas, Texas was the regional champ and Rohan Raja (12) of Irving, Texas, was the first runner up at the Dallas Regional. In New Jersey, Nitya Kathiravan (9) of Edison, New Jersey was the regional champ and Sujata Choudhury (11) of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, was the first runner up. The event is open to children of South Asian descent up to 14 years of age. It will give South Asian children a chance to test their spelling skills in their core peer group. Interested spellers need their parent or guardian to register them online at www.southasianspellingbee.com. Organized by Touchdown Media Inc., the South Asian Spelling Bee is celebrating its 11th anniversary this year and with regionals being held in 6 locations across the United States. An international regional in Accra, Ghana was conducted earlier this year, from where spellers of South Asian descent will qualify for the finals. “For the past ten years, the Bee has consistently provided a firm platform for the community to come together and hone their craft. It’s become a family activity that contributes towards the overall development of the child. We are proud to enter our eleventh consecutive year and look forward to engaging some of these wonderful spellers,” said Rahul Walia, founder of the South Asian Spelling Bee and CEO of Touchdown Media Inc. • Spelling Bees and the United States National Spelling Bee
Out of Many, One: Spelling Bees and the United States National Spelling Bee RACHEL McARTHUR University of Toronto [email protected] THE SPELLING BEE IS A PARADIGMATICALLY AMERICAN INSTITUTION. Its origins are evident linguistically: ‘spelling bee’ is a sterling example of a diachronic Americanism, a term ‘coined in America, but [which has] been adopted wherever else in the English-speaking world [it is] applicable’ (Cassidy and Hall 2001, 213). The cultural practice of spelling bees emerged in the United States within a nexus of social, political, pedagogical and linguistic factors roughly linked to the emergence of American English as a unitary category tied to America’s political identity after the Revolutionary War. Representations of spelling bees in nineteenth century American literature reflect this linguistic identity in process of negotiation. In the twentieth century, spelling bees became media events and the unofficial, community-oriented practice of spelling bees was organized and officialised in the form of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. In popular culture, the National Bee1 has become inextricable from a specific version of American identity, in which hard work leads to material success. As such, its focus is less on reinforcing and consolidating orthographical norms than on the perceived pedagogical—and, more importantly, social—benefits of the difficulty of performing, and, more specifically, learning to perform, those norms. For Our Mutual Benefit: ‘Bees’ as a Cultural Practice The Americanism ‘spelling bee’ is, more fundamentally, a composite: a particular iteration of the American use of the term ‘bee’ to form compounds with verbal nouns. While most of the other terms thus created, such as husking-, paring-, quilting-, or raising-bee, have fallen by the wayside, ‘spelling bee’ has proven itself both highly persistent and highly portable.

  • Playing Through Contradictions: Indo-Pak Basketball and Embodying South Asian American Masculinity by Stanley Ilango Thangaraj D
PLAYING THROUGH CONTRADICTIONS: INDO-PAK BASKETBALL AND EMBODYING SOUTH ASIAN AMERICAN MASCULINITY BY STANLEY ILANGO THANGARAJ DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2010 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Martin Manalansan, Co-Chair Associate Professor Junaid Rana, Co-Chair Professor Nancy Abelmann Professor David Roediger i ABSTRACT This is a qualitative research project incorporating ethnographic methods alongside interviews. Through these qualitative research methods, I sought out how South Asian Americans attribute meaning to leisure activities of basketball and dance clubs. In particular, I examined the Indo- Pak Basketball North American circuit in general and the local Atlanta South Asian American basketball scene in particular. I looked at how South Asian Americans utilize the cultural practices in basketball, its respective pleasures and desires, to talk about belonging and citizenship at the nexus of masculinity, sexuality, race, class, and ethnicity. By examining these cultural practices of belonging, basketball presents a venue by which to provide a critique of US citizenship through South Asian American masculinity while inserting South Asian American- ness into the cultural logic of US citizenship. Sporting and leisure venues allow for such masculine pleasures and desires that contest hegemonic discourses of South Asian Americans as forever foreign—social interactions and consumptive practices of leisure allow for cultural citizenship. Yet, such counter-hegemonic practices exist in fields of power. Thus, this research project explores how South Asian American identity formation takes place in a dialectical relationship of power whereby acts of resistance and re-imagination of normativities does not do away with such fields of power.
