The University of Houston The University of Houston, Texas’ premier public metropolitan research and teaching institution, is home to more than 40 research centers and institutes and sponsors more than 300 partnerships with corporate, civic and governmental agencies. The University of Houston System The University of Houston System is the state’s only metropolitan higher education system, encompassing four universities, two multi-institution teaching centers and the largest university distance learning program in Texas. With more than 64,000 students and 4,600 faculty, it is the largest metropolitan public system of higher education in Texas. The UH System universities include the University of Houston, a nationally recognized doctoral degree- granting, comprehensive research university; the University of Houston-Downtown, a four-year undergraduate university beginning limited expansion into graduate programs; and the University of Houston-Clear Lake and the University of Houston-Victoria, both upper-division and master’s-level institutions. The UH System brings the resources of its four universities in partnership with area community colleges to offer bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the UH System at Cinco Ranch and UH System at Sugar Land teaching centers. History & Tradition

Academic Regalia Academic costumes of today have a history of nearly eight centuries. In medieval Europe, all townspeople wore long flowing robes and gowns. The materials and colors used were governed by royal decree. Gradually, distinctive gowns were developed for the various professions, trades and guilds. Scholars wore robes and hoods to protect their shaved heads. Later, skull caps were worn on the head and the hood became a cape that could be pulled over the head during unpleasant weather. As additional universities were founded, distinctive forms of the gown and hood were adapted by their faculties for bachelors (apprentices of arts), masters (teachers) and doctors (teachers who had completed postgraduate studies). When caps and hats came into fashion in the 15th century, the hoods became ornamental, draped over the shoulders and down the back. The academic hat was first worn as a symbol of the master’s degree and existed in various forms. The mortarboard style comes to us from Oxford University. When academic costumes came to America in 1754, styles were quite varied. In Europe they still are; however, in our country, usage has been standardized by the Intercollegiate Code of Academic Costume.

Ceremonial Symbols

The SeaL Throughout history, seals have been used to authenticate official documents. The University of Houston’s and UH System’s seals bear the Official Seal of Arms of General Sam Houston, as handed down to him from noble ancestors. It includes the escutcheon in the center of the seal — consisting of checkered chevrons denoting nobility and three martlets, gentle lowland birds that symbolize peace and deliverance. A winged hourglass is above the shield. Surmounting this is the motto “In Tempore” (In Time). The greyhounds indicate speed in giving aid. The UH seal was adopted in 1938 in conjunction with the establishment of the present campus. The first official version was etched into the floor of the Roy G. Cullen Building.

University Mace The Mace, which is carried in academic processions, is a staff symbolizing the university’s authority and unity. The tradition of the academic mace began in the late 14th century when two ancient instruments, the royal scepter and the battle mace, were combined to form a university president’s symbol of authority.

Beth madison Beth Madison holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Houston (’72). Her interests in math and sociology led to a career in insurance underwriting and the founding of Madison Benefits Group in 1989. She oversaw the agency’s growth into one of the largest employee benefits specialty firms in the region. Now a Higginbotham Company, MBG is one of the largest full-service insurance brokerage and consulting groups in the United States. Madison has achieved many professional designations in the insurance and benefits industry and thrives on making things happen for her business, community, friends and family. She generously gives of herself to countless organizations. Madison sits on boards for the Houston Symphony, Houston Grand Opera, Alley Theatre, Houston World Affairs Council, Foundation for Teen Health and Trees for Houston. An avid supporter of the University of Houston, she not only helps the Moores School of Music as a member of the Moores Society board, but she also is a University of Houston Alumni Association Life Member and a Life Member Circle of Excellence donor. She established the Madison Merit Scholarship to support incoming freshmen through their undergraduate years. As a trustee of the Madison Charitable Foundation, she has directed generous gifts of more than $1 million each to the UH Cullen College of Engineering and the UH Athletics program. She also created the Madison Endowed Professorship to support a full-time tenured professorship at the Moores School of Music to encourage new research and to create links with the greater community.

“Beth is a joyful philanthropist ... a woman of great distinction and the pride of the University of Houston!” Renu Khator, UH President Reverend WILLIAM A. LAWSON William A. Lawson, the founder and retired pastor of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, is known for his lifelong advocacy on behalf of African Americans, Hispanics, women and the poor. Born in St. Louis, Mo., and raised in Kansas City, Kan., Lawson earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology at Tennessee A&I State University in Nashville, and a bachelor’s of divinity and master’s of theology from Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City. Lawson came to Houston after graduation to serve as director of the Baptist Student Union and professor of Bible at the fledgling Texas Southern University. He served there 10 years, also becoming director of Upward Bound, a precollege program for high school students on the TSU campus. In 1962, Lawson established the Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in his home, where a year later he welcomed Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The church, which began with 13 members, has grown to more than 5,000 members, with many outreach programs. Throughout his life, Lawson has focused on the needs of the poor, downtrodden and disenfranchised. He helped to create the first African American Studies Program at the University of Houston. He created and organized the United Way’s Houston Homeless Initiative and established the Central City Comprehensive Community Center, a service agency designed to serve the needs of inner-city residents. Also, he created a program to register and mobilize voters in the predominantly African American precincts of the city. In 1996, the Houston community honored Lawson with the creation of a nonprofit advocacy agency called the William A. Lawson Institute for Peace and Prosperity. WALIPP has established a middle school for boys, constructed 50 apartment units for seniors in Houston’s Third Ward and pulled together community development groups, churches, civic clubs and local governments to redevelop the Third Ward. Lawson has received honorary doctorates from Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas, the University of Houston and Texas Southern University. He is the author of a book of meditations called Lawson’s Leaves of Love. Lawson is married to Audrey H. Lawson of St. Louis. The couple has four children. Candidates for graduation December 2010

The Honors College

The Honors College at the University of Houston offers its members special opportunities to fully develop their academic abilities. Students who complete the graduation requirements of The Honors College, including a senior honors thesis or senior honors project, graduate with “University Honors and Honors in Major,” the highest undergraduate award conferred by the university. Undergraduate students who complete all requirements of The Honors College and who complete a senior honors thesis or project in a field other than their major graduate with “University Honors.” Undergraduate students who complete all requirements of The Honors College for the thesis or project graduate with “Membership in The Honors College.” Other students, while not members of The Honors College, graduate with “Honors in Major” upon completion of a senior honors thesis or senior honors project.

From this place and time, you will follow the path of more than 220,000 alumni who have walked before you as you pursue new professional and personal goals.
