SLEDGER Vol 2 2011 The Official Publication of the MOUNT ELIZA FOOTBALL CLUB Volume 7 Issue 2 19 th May 2011 Presidents Report…. Mid May 2011 G'day Mounties... Time flies fast in this job - seems I spend most of my time doing updates, Record Club Notes and Sledger Newsletter articles on an almost constant basis....however in a Club like ours and with most folks remote from the actual club-rooms, communication is critical. It's what keeps us all on the same page and hopefully cements the feeling of club and culture that will breed success. As most of you know my last 2 weeks have been in far north Queensland in Port Douglas - family holiday and away from the footy action. Probably a good thing too as our results have been less than super....6 losses from 6 games and even the netballers going down 2 weeks in a row. But this just means we have an opportunity to improve and all of us around the place are part of the process....not just on field with players and Coaches but also off field and around the Club including committee members, supporters and even the ladies in the canteen are all part of the process...And that process needs to start now. We are only 4 weeks into the season and have time left to re-group...but it needs to happen fast and it needs to have all of us involved. It's a lot like US president JFK's famous statement - ask not what your country (Club) can do for you - ask what you can do for your country (Club) The Club is as good as it's people – And that's us. Ask yourselves if you've engaged and putting in or just going through the motions? There's been some recent discussion around Club culture and it's a good debate...however this answer is simple....all of us contribute to the culture and making the Club a super place to be and with people we want to be around. Players : Got your membership paid, what about your player sponsorship, are you training each session or missing a few...doing the team stuff at every opportunity? Are you staying Thursday nights, sticking at Jack's for our after match functions - showing respect to your team mates and even the opposition after away games ? Committee : No different - are you paid up, are your responsibilities under control and on schedule. Have you introduced yourselves to the playing group and new members or parents? Have you met the new Coaches! Members & Supporters : Have you offered to help around the place either on-going or just to get something done where someone needs help. Signed up for Club 10 again this year? Special thanks to Jim Egan for donating a defibrillator unit to the Club. Let's hope we never need to use it, however it's there like an insurance policy. We'll make sure key training staff and committee members are fully trained. Thanks Jim...your support on this one and your sponsorship are greatly and gratefully appreciated mate. Karingal at Ballam Park this week for Seniors and Reserves. This is the start of our move forward and upwards... Let's take 2 big wins to create some momentum. Go Mounties - The season starts afresh this week. Haydn Tracy President. MOUNT ELIZA FOOTBALL CLUB INC. ABN 94 836 443 199 P.O. Box 154 Mount Eliza, Vic, 3930 – Clubrooms Tel: 59-788308 Email : [email protected] Twitter: @mtelizafc “MATCH REPORTS ” Seniors Rd.1 v Pines Mt.Eliza 10.8.68 – S.Lockwood 2, J.Egan 1, L.Peel 1, M.Wilson 1, S.Christie 1, R.Heasley 1, J.Clayton 1, B.Landry 1, S.Wettenhall 1 Lost to Pines 10.20.80 We kicked against a slight breeze in the first quarter and our defence was under siege from the first bounce. In general play we were not getting first hands on contested ball and Pines prime movers were making better use of their running release players. For the quarter Pines had 10 scoring shots and let us off the hook by kicking 8 behinds. Groot, Brock, Egan and D'Orazio worked hard to force them into pressured wide shots. We started the second quarter well and begun to win contested ball across the midfield. Some quick ball forward into our fifty resulted in a slender lead at half time despite having 5 less scoring shots. In the third quarter our work rate and intensity dropped which allowed Pines some clean ball into their 50. When we did win the ball we broke down around the half forward line. Constantly kicking to contests, we paid for our poor decision making and skill errors inside fifty. Despite going inside 50 as many times as the opposition, we were outscored 5 goals to 2. Trailing by 14 points and with the aid of a slight breeze we went into the last quarter very confident. We managed to claw our way back to within a goal before we conceded a late goal which effectively put the game out of reach. Summary: A disappointing first up effort that lacked urgency and intensity. Our spread around stoppages was not as good as our opponents and when we gained first use we fumbled frequently which caused us to over handball at times. We went inside fifty only 2 less times than Pines for 12 less scoring shots. A combination of lack of one touch skills through the midfield and movement in the forward line were two main contributions to this statistic. Positives from the game were the first up games from Ryan Brock and Sam Christie, who kick a great goal after causing a turnover with his tackling pressure and the resilience of the back six to put pressure on despite the ball coming inside 50 quickly. This contributed to the opposition having shots at goal under pressure or in difficult positions. Better Players were Scott Tompkins, Rob D'Orazio, Tim Groot, Ryan Brock and Nathan Brodie Rd.2 v Mornington Mt.Eliza 22.9.141 – S. Lockwood 6, R. Heasley 3, S. Christie 3, N. Brodie 2, S. Wettenhall 2, J. Clayton 2, A. Carratello 2, D. Emmons 1, L. Young 1 Defeated Mornington 15.20.110 The first quarter saw Mt Eliza hit the ground running with an 11 goal to 3 scoreline. Players were following instructions by cutting Mornington to shreds with quick ball movement. Jim Clayton was brilliant with his attack on the ball at stoppages and clean disposal. He was well supported by Dylon Emmons and Luke Peel, who was wearing a heavy Tag. Attack on the ball and willingness to tackle aggressively were also an obvious improvement from the week before. Scotty Lockwood was createing headaches for the opposition coaching staff with hard leading and strong marking. Scott Simpson and Rohan Heasley were working well together from inside stoppages creating scoring opportunities. With the spirits high we went into the second and third quarters with a little “over” confidence and slipped back into playing “safe” footy. Our workrate dropped slightly, enough to give mornington a sniff and get to within 8 points in the last quarter to their credit they never gave up. To our credit we also responded to the late challenge kicking 4 late goals to win by 31 points. Summary: Great to have a win and learn that if we stick to our game plan and come to play with intensity we will always give ourselves a fighting chance. Better Player were Scott Lockwood (6 Goals) Jim Clayton, Dylan Emmons, Rohan Heasley (3 early goals set the tone and spread Mornington's defence), Landry, Groot, and Sam Christie played inspired footy when he was moved to the wing in the second half. MOUNT ELIZA FOOTBALL CLUB INC. ABN 94 836 443 199 P.O. Box 154 Mount Eliza, Vic, 3930 – Clubrooms Tel: 59-788308 Email : [email protected] Twitter: @mtelizafc “MATCH REPORTS ” cont’d Rd.3 v Chelsea Mt.Eliza 12.8.80 – S.Simpson 3, T.Rees 2, S.Wettenhall 2, M.Wilson 1, D.Emmons 1, L.Young 1, J.Clayton 1, S.Lockwood 1 Lost to Chelsea 22.18.150 Always hard to win at Chelsea, particularly as they had shown good early season form. We welcomed Ben Crowder into the side for his first game in the Seniors. We got off to a good start with Tommy Rees grabbing the ball at a stoppage in the pocket and kicking truly from 40 out. Lockwood, Simmo and Reesy all took marks inside 50 to kick goals, whilst Wetters barreled one from 50 out and Simmo and Titchy (Quick hands from Rees) snapped another couple. Chelsea booted 4 goals in a 10 minute period of play, in a quarter that went 39 minutes! The forward line pressure was good and Simmo and Rees were looking dangerous across half forward with half a dozen marks between them. Peely picked up 12 touches, D’Orazio 7 and the team amassed 33 tackles. We held a 3 point quarter time lead (7.2 to 6.5) but we lost Scotty Lockwood to a groin injury. The start of the 2 nd term was a battle of defences before they kicked one in the goal square. They had a player sent off for a high hit and the resulting penalty saw Simmo take a big grab in the square to kick his 2 nd . They did likewise at the other end before Youngy marked and goaled from 35 out.

The inaugural Breakaways Women’s Pre-season AFLX Challenge Carnival & Clubs Picnic: Sunday 10 March 2019 INFORMATION KIT – V2 (Amended 6 March 2019) • Holroyd-Parramatta Goannas • Macquarie University • Newtown Breakaways • Pennant Hills Demons • Southern Power • St George AFL • Sydney University Women's AFL • UNSW Bulldogs • UTS AFC • Western Magic • Wollondilly Knights • Wollongong Saints Welcome Players, Officials, Coaches, Partners and Friends, Congratulations on nominating your Club to play in the inaugural Newtown Breakaways Pre-season Women’s Challenge. We have attracted 13 Clubs/18 teams to this tournament and we thank you for this dynamic demonstration of the growing strength of Women’s AFL community. The Challenge was developed in response to the identified need for clubs to secure competitive pre-season trial games; to test new players and provide a real game environment beyond clubs internal training. Clubs are also seeking to build the capacity and skills of volunteers for club game day officials by providing game day training and experience. We have been supported in the development of this project by AFL Sydney. For 2019 we have chosen the AFLX format to ensure maximum participation with two fields and two pools operating on the day. The Breakaways designed the Challenge event as a Carnival & Clubs Picnic to encourage comradery amongst the women’s clubs and players while still engaging in competitive football. We encourage teams to spread the story about women’s AFL. Use the promotional material with your club logo and bring you friends, team mates and support your team - bring a marquee, picnic and picnic rugs - enjoy the day.

EAST MALVERN JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB Knights News 2011 Weekly Newsletter Issue No 7 Presidents Report Welcome Round 6 Presidents report .Thank you to everyone who attended our first club night for 2011 last Sunday night. It was great to have Carlton midfielder Marc Murphy in attendance where he presented our player of the month awards, answered questions, signed autographs and had photos taken. Thanks to Marc for his patience. As we approach the half way mark of the season I wanted to make all parents aware of a couple of things I intend to do after the school holiday break. We will be having a follow up the coaches and team mangers meeting to ensure that the 2011 season is on track before finals commence for the older age groups and discuss with these very important volunteers ways we can look to improve the club both on and off the field in 2012 As I had mentioned to some parents during the season I will be organizing a forum to discuss team selection process to see how the club can improve this area for the 2012 season. Team selection is one of the most debated topics amongst the parent group in our club and many others across the entire league. The club remains committed to grading from U13 in every age group where we have more than 1 team. Whilst this is in place the club should always be looking to improve our process for all other age groups from Under 9 through to under 12’s inclusive. I will let people know dates and the agenda for discussion after the term break, but this is an opportunity for you to discuss ideas and process with the committee.
