Presidents Report…. Mid May 2011 G'day Mounties... Time flies fast in this job - seems I spend most of my time doing updates, Record Club Notes and Sledger Newsletter articles on an almost constant basis....however in a Club like ours and with most folks remote from the actual club-rooms, communication is critical. It's what keeps us all on the same page and hopefully cements the feeling of club and culture that will breed success.

As most of you know my last 2 weeks have been in far north Queensland in Port Douglas - family holiday and away from the footy action. Probably a good thing too as our results have been less than super....6 losses from 6 games and even the netballers going down 2 weeks in a row. But this just means we have an opportunity to improve and all of us around the place are part of the process....not just on field with players and Coaches but also off field and around the Club including committee members, supporters and even the ladies in the canteen are all part of the process...And that process needs to start now.

We are only 4 weeks into the season and have time left to re-group...but it needs to happen fast and it needs to have all of us involved. It's a lot like US president JFK's famous statement - ask not what your country (Club) can do for you - ask what you can do for your country (Club) The Club is as good as it's people – And that's us. Ask yourselves if you've engaged and putting in or just going through the motions? There's been some recent discussion around Club culture and it's a good debate...however this answer is simple....all of us contribute to the culture and making the Club a super place to be and with people we want to be around.

Players : Got your membership paid, what about your player sponsorship, are you training each session or missing a few...doing the team stuff at every opportunity? Are you staying Thursday nights, sticking at Jack's for our after match functions - showing respect to your team mates and even the opposition after away games ?

Committee : No different - are you paid up, are your responsibilities under control and on schedule. Have you introduced yourselves to the playing group and new members or parents? Have you met the new Coaches!

Members & Supporters : Have you offered to help around the place either on-going or just to get something done where someone needs help. Signed up for Club 10 again this year?

Special thanks to Jim Egan for donating a defibrillator unit to the Club. Let's hope we never need to use it, however it's there like an insurance policy. We'll make sure key training staff and committee members are fully trained. Thanks Jim...your support on this one and your sponsorship are greatly and gratefully appreciated mate.

Karingal at Ballam Park this week for Seniors and Reserves. This is the start of our move forward and upwards... Let's take 2 big wins to create some momentum.

Go Mounties - The season starts afresh this week.

Haydn Tracy President.

Rd.1 v Pines Mt.Eliza 10.8.68 – S.Lockwood 2, J.Egan 1, L.Peel 1, M.Wilson 1, S.Christie 1, R.Heasley 1, J.Clayton 1, B.Landry 1, S.Wettenhall 1 Lost to Pines 10.20.80 We kicked against a slight breeze in the first quarter and our defence was under siege from the first bounce. In general play we were not getting first hands on contested ball and Pines prime movers were making better use of their running release players. For the quarter Pines had 10 scoring shots and let us off the hook by kicking 8 behinds. Groot, Brock, Egan and D'Orazio worked hard to force them into pressured wide shots. We started the second quarter well and begun to win contested ball across the midfield. Some quick ball forward into our fifty resulted in a slender lead at half time despite having 5 less scoring shots. In the third quarter our work rate and intensity dropped which allowed Pines some clean ball into their 50. When we did win the ball we broke down around the half forward line. Constantly kicking to contests, we paid for our poor decision making and skill errors inside fifty. Despite going inside 50 as many times as the opposition, we were outscored 5 goals to 2. Trailing by 14 points and with the aid of a slight breeze we went into the last quarter very confident. We managed to claw our way back to within a goal before we conceded a late goal which effectively put the game out of reach. Summary: A disappointing first up effort that lacked urgency and intensity. Our spread around stoppages was not as good as our opponents and when we gained first use we fumbled frequently which caused us to over handball at times. We went inside fifty only 2 less times than Pines for 12 less scoring shots. A combination of lack of one touch skills through the midfield and movement in the forward line were two main contributions to this statistic. Positives from the game were the first up games from Ryan Brock and Sam Christie, who kick a great goal after causing a turnover with his tackling pressure and the resilience of the back six to put pressure on despite the ball coming inside 50 quickly. This contributed to the opposition having shots at goal under pressure or in difficult positions. Better Players were Scott Tompkins, Rob D'Orazio, Tim Groot, Ryan Brock and Nathan Brodie

Rd.2 v Mornington Mt.Eliza 22.9.141 – S. Lockwood 6, R. Heasley 3, S. Christie 3, N. Brodie 2, S. Wettenhall 2, J. Clayton 2, A. Carratello 2, D. Emmons 1, L. Young 1 Defeated Mornington 15.20.110 The first quarter saw Mt Eliza hit the ground running with an 11 goal to 3 scoreline. Players were following instructions by cutting Mornington to shreds with quick ball movement. Jim Clayton was brilliant with his attack on the ball at stoppages and clean disposal. He was well supported by Dylon Emmons and Luke Peel, who was wearing a heavy Tag. Attack on the ball and willingness to aggressively were also an obvious improvement from the week before. Scotty Lockwood was createing headaches for the opposition coaching staff with hard leading and strong marking. Scott Simpson and Rohan Heasley were working well together from inside stoppages creating scoring opportunities. With the spirits high we went into the second and third quarters with a little “over” confidence and slipped back into playing “safe” footy. Our workrate dropped slightly, enough to give mornington a sniff and get to within 8 points in the last quarter to their credit they never gave up. To our credit we also responded to the late challenge kicking 4 late goals to win by 31 points. Summary: Great to have a win and learn that if we stick to our game plan and come to play with intensity we will always give ourselves a fighting chance. Better Player were Scott Lockwood (6 Goals) Jim Clayton, Dylan Emmons, Rohan Heasley (3 early goals set the tone and spread Mornington's defence), Landry, Groot, and Sam Christie played inspired footy when he was moved to the wing in the second half.

Rd.3 v Chelsea Mt.Eliza 12.8.80 – S.Simpson 3, T.Rees 2, S.Wettenhall 2, M.Wilson 1, D.Emmons 1, L.Young 1, J.Clayton 1, S.Lockwood 1 Lost to Chelsea 22.18.150 Always hard to win at Chelsea, particularly as they had shown good early season form. We welcomed Ben Crowder into the side for his first game in the Seniors. We got off to a good start with Tommy Rees grabbing the ball at a stoppage in the pocket and kicking truly from 40 out. Lockwood, Simmo and Reesy all took marks inside 50 to kick goals, whilst Wetters barreled one from 50 out and Simmo and Titchy (Quick hands from Rees) snapped another couple. Chelsea booted 4 goals in a 10 minute period of play, in a quarter that went 39 minutes! The forward line pressure was good and Simmo and Rees were looking dangerous across half forward with half a dozen marks between them. Peely picked up 12 touches, D’Orazio 7 and the team amassed 33 tackles. We held a 3 point quarter time lead (7.2 to 6.5) but we lost Scotty Lockwood to a groin injury. The start of the 2 nd term was a battle of defences before they kicked one in the goal square. They had a player sent off for a high hit and the resulting penalty saw Simmo take a big grab in the square to kick his 2 nd . They did likewise at the other end before Youngy marked and goaled from 35 out. They kicked the last couple of goals to go in leading by 7 points. Leading possession gatherers were Lloydy with 8, Dyl Emmons and Youngy 7 and Wetters, Jimmy and Peely with 6 each. Chelsea opened with a goal early before good work from Titch set up the Skipper who snapped a ripper from 45 out. They kicked the next 5 goals to blow the game open, although we gave them a couple with a downfield free and a defensive error in the pocket costing us. Dyl Emmons snuck one through the pack for his first, but we trailed by 6 goals at the break. Just 11 tackles for the quarter and 71 touches across the board and 6 Inside 50’s to 16, put us well and truly on the back foot. Jimmy and Lloydy headed the stats with 7 touches each. They kicked away early in the last with the first couple as players failed to be accountable for their opponent. Wetters kicked our solitary goal from the square, after they gave away a 50m penalty (Landry off with the blood rule behind the play). They kicked the last 4 goals of the game to run out comfortable winners. Peely collected 29 touches and 6 marks to head the stats count, Jimmy (23), Wetters (22) Lloyd (22), Dyl (20) and Robbie took 7 marks to go with his 19. Big Sebba had 15 hit outs for the game. Better players were Rees, Wetters, Groota, Lloyd, Simmo and the Skipper.

Rd.4 v Edi-Asp Mt.Eliza 9.12.66 – S.Wettenhall 3, N.Brodie 1, T.Rees 1, L.Peel 1, R.Brock 1, R.Heasley 1, B.Landry 1 Lost to Edi-Asp 19.20.134 Playing our 2 nd Home game at Mornington we kicked with the wind in the first term. The first goal took over 10 minutes when they goaled from 30 out, which was followed soon after by a big bump by Simmo, letting Youngy in to dish off to Wetters who kicked a long . They kicked 3 of the next 4 goals - Sam Christie passing brilliantly to Peely on the lead for our 2 nd . Coach Scurrah was not impressed at the break – We weren’t putting the team first and were being selfish. Jimmy and Lloyd led the stats with 8 and 6 touches respectively. We only had 68 possies for the quarter and trailed 2.1 to 4.5 They kicked a goal from the opening centre clearance, before Cranny received a 50m penalty and kicked to Brodes who kicked his first from close range. This would be as close as we got, as Edi kicked the next 5 goals of the game, using the footy far more efficiently than we were. We trailed by over 8 goals at the main change, although Peely (10), D’Orazio (9) and Cranny (7) were getting plenty of the ball. We had to take the game on in the next half, particularly with the wind as we were waiting for the footy to come to us – Not going at it. Ben Landry marked in the centre square, went back another 20 metres before passing off to Brocky who goaled from 45 out after 7 minutes. They then kicked the next couple to extend their lead to 10 goals. Wetters kicked his 2 nd and 3 rd goals in quick succession, with a barrel from outside 50 that rolled through and another after marking low down 35 out. We kicked 3 in a row when Heasa snapped a ripper in the pocket on his left. They kicked their 3 rd goal from the square, before Youngy’s quick give to Landry saw him snap one through. Rd.4 v Edi-Asp cont’d A 5.4 to 3.1 quarter saw us go in to the last term 6 goals down. Peely picked up 9 touches, Landry 8 and Lloydy had 7 plus 4 solid tackles. We had all the play for the first 10 minutes of the last quarter, kicking 0.3 and 1 out of bounds, before Edi piled on 6 goals to 1 (Rees marking from 35 out) to run out comfortable winners by 68 points. Best players were Wettenhall with 20 touches and 3.2, Lloyd with 25 and 10 tackles, Landry with 25 and 9 marks, Peely with 36 and 8 marks and the Skipper and D’Orazio were once again solid across half back. The Coach spoke calmly after the game, pointing out that we had just “Got a lesson in intensity” and that “Our best and worst are too far apart” A big effort expected this Saturday against Karingal, who have not beaten us since Rd.15 2008!!

Reserves

Rd.3 v Chelsea Mt.Eliza 5.6.36 – M.Austin 2, T.Strickland 2, J.Carratello 1 Lost to Chelsea 16.11.107 We travelled to Chelsea this week with a couple of surprise inclusions Ex-Dava Dash Champion Peter Vaughan, The spiritual Leader Aussie, Grandpa Strickland and Muncha also pulled the boots back on. With these inclusions the warm up and atmosphere was super and we were expecting big things… Sadly it wasn’t to be. Chelsea were an excellent side, fit, fast and played an excellent brand of footy. They had 14 players from last year’s Senior side and it showed the difference. Although our effort and attitude was excellent, the skill execution, the decision making and one-touch footy was not good enough. These things will only improve with consistent training and hard work. Better Players: Catta, Suhr, Strickland, Keecher, Cole, Kurts, Vosti, Austin.

Rd.4 v Edi-Asp Mt.Eliza 7.12.54 – L.Johnston 2, M.Cleary 1, M.Jackson 1, A.Collins 1, T.Johnston 1, T.Strickland 1 Lost to Edi-Asp 9.13.67 Last week we played Edi Asp at home and again had many changes to the side. We had a different focus this week and that as individuals we would try to play the best we could and beat our direct opponent. The message was simplified and the players responded with a much better performance. If it wasn’t for kicking 8 points in the 2 nd quarter and at least 6 of those easy shots, we most likely would have won the game. The boys really put in a super effort and made big improvements in the areas of decision making, one touch, respecting direct opponent and intensity. Still need to keep working on these areas and also keep improving the skills and finishing. Need to keep positive and keep working hard and hopefully a win is not far away. Better Players: Collins, Johnston, Scarpella, Cleary, Bange, Burnham

Rd.1 v Pines Mt.Eliza 28.17.185 – J.Stannus 7, T.Koleits 6, R.Harink 3, T.Bartolo 2, J.Pagonis 2, R.Maskiell 2, T.Drummond 1, C.Sanderson 1, R.Crawley-Boevey 1, M.Anwyl 1, J.Nisbet 1 Defeated Pines 1.1.7 Best: Tim Koleitis, Tim O’Dwyer, Jack Stannus, Jack Nisbet, Colby Paulding, Nic Cox, Tim Drummond An impressive score but with Pines fielding only 12 players we rotated 4 of our own to ensure a game could take place with 16 a side. Good to see new players performing well in Tim Koleits(lead strongly plus 6 goals from CHF before finishing the game at CHB, Jack Nisbet, Nic Cox, and Colby Paulding. Tim O’Dwyer’s run off half back was super. Whilst we controlled the footy it was still good to see Jack Stannus not only kick 7 goals but lead our tackle count with 4 and finish off the game playing for Pines in the last quarter. Mitch Anwyl was awarded the ‘crunchie’ tackle of the day with his flying leap to bring down an opponent. Tim Drummond’s work rate and use was terrific. Congratulations: Lewis Pierce – 1st Year U18 – played first game for Dandenong Stingrays TAC v Geelong. Sam Christie- 1st Year U18 – recruited from Frankston Dolphins U16 – Debut game in Mt Eliza Senior team – Fantastic effort after impressive pre-season. Mitch (Titch) Wilson – 3rd Year U18- Captain U18’s also selected in MEFC senior team for Rd.1 after impressive pre- season.

Rd.2 v Mornington Mt.Eliza 1.2.8 – N.Cox 1 Lost to Mornington 19.18.132 Best: Nic Cox, Jack Nisbet, Tim Koleits, Tim O’Dwyer Thud! We were quickly brought back to Earth after the easy contest in Rd 1. Mornington were very good all day. We tried hard but were unable to create any run or get clean possessions with their constant pressure. Jack Nisbet was getting first touch time after time in the ruck. However, they were able to feed it out better than we could and often found a loose player. Every time we got our hands on the ball we were locked up in a tackle or pressured to kick or release which saw their players swoop, clean up and run the ball away...we chased a lot in this game! We did battle it out to the end. They were just a far superior team on the day. There were some positive signs that came out of this game: Matt & Charlie Pascazio -1st game – both showed great attack on the contest. Jack Nisbet – rucking well, working back into our defensive, good use too. Nic Cox- hard at ball & contests and kicked a great goal from on the fifty! Tim O’Dwyer – hard at contests, good defensive spoiling & played in the Reserves. Chris Cleary – disciplined role on one of their key midfielders after ½ time. Tim Koleits – hard attack on the contest & took some big hits but kept going. Jarryd Pagonis – winning several crucial 1:1 contests Colby Paulding – Crunchie tackle in the 2 nd quarter. Congratulations : Sam Christie & Will Cleeland nominated for the MPNFL Inter League squad. VCFL Championships played on May 28 th at Frankston Park v Ovens & Murray League. Lewis Pierce in the best players for Dandenong Stingrays last weekend.

Under 18’s

Rd.3 v Chelsea Mt.Eliza 4.5.29 – T.Bartolo 1, T.Drummond 1, M.Brancatisano 1, T.Koleits 1 Lost to Chelsea 12.12.84 We dominated play in the first quarter but could not convert on the score board. They were able to score every time they went inside 50 (3 goals 2). We had one scoring opportunity from 16 entries. We wasted an opportunity to put the opposition under pressure by NOT being able to score. The only goal came when Tim Sinclair fired off a quick handball to Robbie Maskiell on the move through the middle who handballed to Tim Drummond running hard. Tim kicked a super goal from outside 50m. In the second quarter we went Inside 50 10 times whilst we still could not convert (1 score a point) at least we hit up some players with 4 marks inside 50. Our pressure improved with 13 tackles for the quarter, but their efficiency 3 goals from 7 entries forward was a big factor in the game. Charlie Pascazio was great in defense, taking clean marks and laying 3 strong tackles. Tim Sinclair was great around the stoppages –his fierce attack on the ball stood out. Mitch A was working hard, getting in and under also plus running hard to apply pressure. Matt Pascazio was hard at the ball and showed the appropriate level of INTENSITY and EFFORT required to be a valuable contributor. Rhys worked hard to get front and centre several times, but overall our poor use and fumbling cost us as we repeatedly turned the ball over. In the third quarter we laid14 tackles with Tim O’Dwyer laying the crunchie tackle of the day. Tim Sinclair, Matt P and Charlie P maintained their intensity. Colby was moved to full back and battled hard against a much taller opponent. We were a little better going forward with 3 scoring shots from 6 inside 50s (50 % conversion is achievable – it would have resulted in perhaps 5 or 6 goals in the first quarter!!) However they managed 4 goals 2 from 7 entries. In the final quarter Jack Nisbet continued to play his role in the ruck working deep to help out in defense. However, basic skill errors continued let us down as we handed the footy back far too easily. There were some great instances of the right level of INTENSITY – led by Charlie & Matt Pascazio and Tim Sinclair with Coxy, Mitch, Tim O’Dwyer , Rhys , Colby chipping in but in all it was left to too few on the day. We absolutely require a more even contribution in the EFFORT, INTENSITY and Hard Running aspects of the game to compete. We ALL need to continue working on EXECUTING skills under pressure. Best: Charlie Pascazio, Tim Sinclair, Matt Pascazio, Jack Nisbet.

Rd.4 v Edi-Asp Mt.Eliza 5.5.35 – R.Maskiell 2, R.Bourke-Clark 2, R.Harink 1 lost to Edi-Asp 11.9.75 1st Quarter - We kicked with the breeze and dominated play. Our effort and intensity were characterised by 2 sensational smothers – firstly by Will Cleeland and shortly after by Charlie Pascazio. Coxy also set the tone with a great run from off half back to crash a pack and help create our first goal. Tim Koleits was providing many strong leads and troubled their backmen with his fierce attack on the ball. Mitch Anwyl was super clean under pressure and Tim Drummond gave us plenty of run plus used his possessions well. We did not convert our chances- 12 inside 50s for 2 goals 2 whilst they managed 2 goals from 6 entries inside their 50. 15 tackles great pressure early, 4 shepherds also positive. We were fairly even on clearances early and this remained the case all day. 2nd Quarter - We were good again. Coxy and Tim O’Dwyer combining several times to switch play out of the backline was good to see. Beggsy gave a hard chase to apply pressure. We had 16 tackles, which was again good with Charlie Pascazio sticking 3 strong tackles for the quarter. We went inside 50 8 times but could only manage 2 points. They went inside 50 11 times and kicked 4 goals 2. We had given away 2 x 50m penalties by half time, careless – walking across the mark and sloppy return after a free-resulted in 2 goals. The backs were under enormous pressure but did well –Jarryd Pagonis, Rob Crawley-Boevey, Tim O’Dwyer, Matt Pascazio, Nic Cox and Will Cleeland all playing solid games as a back six. 3rd Quarter - Our use was better with players giving hands off the deck to teammates running past. Matt Pascazio combined with Coxy to help set up our first goal. Titch on a flank drilled a missile like pass to Riley leading out of the square who marked strongly directly in front and kicked truly. Charlie Pascazio laid the ‘crunchie’ tackle of the day -1 of 6 for the game. Coxy, Tim O’Dwyer, Jarryd Pagonis and Rob Crawley-Boevey were repelling every Edi thrust forward as we kept them to 1 point for the quarter. Our use was better coming out of defence but we still struggled to get reward for effort on the score board. Continued…

U/18 - Rd.4 v Edi-Asp cont’d

4th Quarter - We had some good passages in the last with TK still working hard, Mitch continuing to gather the ball clean and make good use of it. Clears was playing a disciplined role on ball and starting to get his hands on the footy around the ground. Titch ran down an opponent to lay a great tackle (1 of 7 for the game). However, a few of us dropped our level of intensity, 5 missed tackles for the quarter. They lifted the pressure stakes laying 19 tackles to our 15. We gave them a few easy shots on goal by once again poor decisions to kick in board too early resulting in a turnover. A much better effort this week in many areas. CRUNCHIE TACKLE OF THE DAY: Charlie Pascazio Best:Tim Koleits, Mitch Anwyl, Nic Cox, Tim Drummond, Charlie Pascazio, Tim Sinclair, Tim O’Dwyer and Matt Pascazio

“NETBALL NEWS ”

Rd.4 Match Details Chelsea started the game strong getting the jump on us in the first term. They were 6 goals up going into the second quarter, which makes for a game of catch up. Credit to the Redlegs who managed to step it up and see an even score for that quarter. It still left us 6 goals down at that stage. Unfortunately we were unable to maintain the pressure applied in the second quarter and we slipped back a further 7 goals, so 13 to make up in the final term! Big ask. Never say die, the girls should be credited with fighting spirit as they came out all guns firing in the last to out score Chelsea for that quarter by two. Unfortunately it wasn't enough to secure a win this week going down 58 to 47. Well done to Chelsea for a great win, we'll look forward to a re match further in the season. This week we meet the reining premiers, Edi-Asp 1, who will be tough opponents at our home court in the village at 1.15pm.

WARDROBE MALFUNCTION!!

New player to the MEFC Alex (Alby) Mangl got the shock of his life last Saturday at Mornington, when in the 3rd quarter a tackle around the waist resulted in his shorts being ripped clean off. Unperturbed the big fella kept playing (In his bike pants) until a suitably sized replacement pair arrived, albeit some 10 minutes after he was de-robed. Obviously there were lots of comments in the crowd, but the best one was directed to the MEFC Runner Aran Michael “Make sure you get the money off him first”

IS IT CRICKET OR FOOTY SEASON?

It must have been the day for things going amiss – Senior Team Manager Anthony Hare was asked to sms through the quarter by quarter scores to the MPNFL Hotline. Easy enough you would reckon - This was duly done. After the first 3 quarters were sent through “Harey” received a call from the President of the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association !) asking why he was receiving the Edi-Asp v Mt.Eliza footy scores. The mistake was duly noted and the full time scores were sent though to the Footy League!!

BABY ON THE WAY…

Congratulations to Meagan and Damien Kent who have just announced that they are expecting their 2 nd child in November. A little brother or sister for young Will.
