GARZA, Circuit Judge: Plaintiffs-Appellants Mitzi Green and Jessica Green (collectively, the “Greens”) appeal the district court’s grant of summary judgment in favor of Defendants-Appellees CBS Broadcasting Inc., 48 Hours, Dan Rather, Chuck Stevenson, Bill Lagattuta, and Susan Zirinsky (collectively, “CBS”). On appeal, we must decide whether the district court correctly determined that no genuine issue of material fact existed as to the Greens’ defamation or invasion of privacy claims. CBS published and aired a story entitled “Lotto Town” in January 1998 on its weekly news magazine, 48 Hours, detailing the lives of forty-two lotto millionaires living in the small town of Roby, Texas. One of these lotto winners was Lance Green, Mitzi Green’s ex-husband. In the course of its one-hour broadcast, CBS showed how Lance’s life changed during the year following his lotto win. The story included, among other events, Lance’s divorce from Mitzi Green, his relationship with her daughter Jessica, and Mitzi Green’s charge that Lance had sexually abused Jessica. During the broadcast, Lance, the CBS correspondent Lagattuta, and other Roby residents made several statements referencing Mitzi. -

09-Mollin 12/2/03 3:26 PM Page 113 The Limits of Egalitarianism: Radical Pacifism, Civil Rights, and the Journey of Reconciliation Marian Mollin In April 1947, a group of young men posed for a photograph outside of civil rights attorney Spottswood Robinson’s office in Richmond, Virginia. Dressed in suits and ties, their arms held overcoats and overnight bags while their faces carried an air of eager anticipation. They seemed, from the camera’s perspective, ready to embark on an exciting adventure. Certainly, in a nation still divided by race, this visibly interracial group of black and white men would have caused people to stop and take notice. But it was the less visible motivations behind this trip that most notably set these men apart. All of the group’s key organizers and most of its members came from the emerging radical pacifist movement. Opposed to violence in all forms, many had spent much of World War II behind prison walls as conscientious objectors and resisters to war. Committed to social justice, they saw the struggle for peace and the fight for racial equality as inextricably linked. Ardent egalitarians, they tried to live according to what they called the brotherhood principle of equality and mutual respect. As pacifists and as militant activists, they believed that nonviolent action offered the best hope for achieving fundamental social change. IDENTITY CHATS: CO-AUTHORIZED NARRATIVES AND THE PERFORMANCE OF WRITERLY SELVES IN MASS-MULTILITERATE TIMES Stacy Kastner A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2013 Committee: Dr. Lee Nickoson, Advisor Dr. Savilla Banister Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Kristine Blair Dr. Sue Carter Wood Dr. Kevin Roozen, Auburn University © 2013 Stacy Kastner All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Lee Nickoson, Advisor Inspired by my classroom experience and Deborah Brandt’s findings that generations of Americans were resistant to calling themselves “writer,” this multimodal dissertation focuses on the critical narratives, reading and writing artifacts, reflections, and theories of two primary co- researching-participants (CRPs) concerning the complicated and elusive identity of “writer” (Barthes; Foucault) and the not always complimentary relationship between definitions of writing in school, in popular culture and opinion, and in everyday practice (Brodkey; Prior). I conducted two narrative case studies between December 2011 and May 2013 with two adolescents. In my study, I integrated methods from rhetoric, composition, and writing studies with a narrative inquiry methodology, building co-authorization into the research relationship and utilizing digital composing tools in order to disrupt the limitations and exclusivity of a traditionally single-authored and print-based space and in order to situate the stories of student writers at the center of my study. I also made use of a variety of dialogue-driven instruments: (1) oral histories and loosely-based interviews (Brandt; Selfe and Hawisher); (2) a writer’s questionnaire that asked CRPs to describe “writing,” the identity “writer,” and themselves as writers; (3) Joy Reid’s Perceptual Learning Styles Preference Questionnaire; (4) archives of CRPs’ print and digital reading and writing artifacts; (5) artifact-based interviews (Halbritter and Lindquist); and (6) text-based interviews (Roozen). -

SUNDAY REVIEW Sylvia Chase and the Boys’ Club of TV News When we started at the networks in the early ’70s, most of us tried to hide our gender. Sylvia spoke out. By Lesley Stahl Ms. Stahl is a correspondent for “60 Minutes.” Jan. 12, 2019 Back in the early 1970s, the TV network news organizations wanted to show the world that they were “equal opportunity employers.” And so, CBS, ABC and NBC scoured the country for women and minorities. In 1971, Sylvia Chase was a reporter and radio producer in Los Angeles, and I was a local TV reporter in Boston. CBS hired her for the New York bureau; I was sent to Washington. Sylvia, who died last week at age 80, and I were CBS’s affirmative action babies, along with Connie Chung and Michele Clark. To ensure we had no illusions about our lower status, we were given the title of “reporter.” We would have to earn the position of “correspondent” that our male colleagues enjoyed. We were more like apprentices, often sent out on stories with the seniors, like Roger Mudd and Daniel Schorr. While we did reports for radio, the “grown-ups” — all men — did TV, but we were allowed to watch how they developed sources, paced their days and wrote and edited their stories. Up until then, most women in broadcast journalism were researchers. At first, the four of us in our little group were grateful just to be in the door as reporters. Things began to stir when the women at Newsweek sued over gender discrimination. -
