List of Contributors Anne Black is a postgraduate student in the Discipline of English and Creative Writing at the University of Adelaide, where she is writing a thesis on the life and work of George Isaacs. She hopes that the result will find a publisher and that Isaacs will be accorded greater recognition for his contribution to South Australian literature. Alison Broinowski was an Australian diplomat until 1996. Her last overseas assignment was at the Australian Mission to the UN in New York. Her PhD is in Asian Studies at ANU. She has written or edited 11 books on Australia's interface with Asia and with the United Nations, three of the latest being About Face: Asian Accounts of Australia (2003), Howard's War (2003) and Allied and Addicted (2007). She is a Visiting Fellow at ANU and is a research associate at Macquarie University. In 2013 she stood for the Senate in NSW for the WikiLeaks Party. Philip Butterss teaches Australian literature and film at the University of Adelaide. Over the past 25 years he has written widely on Australian cultural history. His recently completed biography of C.J. Dennis will be published by Wakefield Press. He is currently working on a history of literary Adelaide. Gillian Dooley is Special Collections Librarian and Honorary Senior Research Fellow in Humanities at Flinders University. Her publications include V.S. Naipaul, Man and Writer and J.M. Coetzee and the Power of Narrative, and essays on writers ranging from Jane Austen to Iris Murdoch. x Adelaide: a literary city She is a regular book reviewer for Australian Book Review and founding editor of two journals, Transnational Literature and Writers in Conversation. Kerryn Goldsworthy was born and educated in South Australia and then lectured in literature at the University of Melbourne for 17 years before moving home to Adelaide, where she has lived and worked as a freelance writer and critic since 1998. She is the author of three books: a collection of short stories, a book of literary criticism, and, most recently, Adelaide (2011) in the NewSouth Books 'Cities' series. She was a member of the editorial team that produced The Macquarie PEN Anthology of Australian Literature (2009), and won the 2013 Pascall Prize for Critical Writing, earning the title Australian Critic of the Year. Jill Jones has published seven full-length books, most recently Ash is Here, So are Stars (Walleah Press 2012). A new book, The Beautiful Anxiety, is due from Puncher and Wattmann in 2014. She won the Kenneth Slessor Poetry Prize 2003 for Screens Jets Heaven: New & Selected Poems and the Mary Gilmore Award 1993 for The Mask and the Jagged Star. Her work has featured in a number of recent anthologies including the Macquarie PEN Anthology of Australian Literature and The Penguin Anthology of Australian Poetry. She is a member of the J.M. Coetzee Centre for Creative Practice, the University of Adelaide, and teaches there in the Discipline of English and Creative Writing. Nicholas Jose is a novelist, essayist and playwright, whose thirteen books include the novels Paper Nautilus, Avenue of Eternal Peace (shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Literary Award), The Custodians (shortlisted for the Commonwealth Prize) and Original Face; two short story collections; a volume of essays, Chinese Whispers; and the memoir Black Sheep. He is general editor of the Macquarie PEN Anthology of Australian Literature (also published as The Literature of Australia). He was Visiting Chair of Australian Studies at Harvard University 2009-2010 and taught there again in 2011. He is Professor of English and Creative Writing in the School of Humanities at the University of Adelaide, Adjunct Professor Adelaide: a literary city xi with the Writing and Society Research Centre at the University of Western Sydney, and Professor of Creative Writing at Bath Spa University. Peter Kirkpatrick is a senior lecturer in Australian Literature in the Department of English at the University of Sydney, and is the author of The Sea Coast of Bohemia: Literary Life in Sydney's Roaring Twenties (2nd edn API Network, 2007). He has co-edited, with Fran De Groen, Serious Frolic: Essays on Australian Humour (University of Queensland Press, 2009) and, with Robert Dixon, Republics of Letters: Literary Communities in Australia (Sydney University Press, 2012). Jill Roe AO is Professor Emerita in Modern History at Macquarie University, Sydney, where she was recently awarded a D. Litt as a higher research degree for her work on Australian writer Miles Franklin. Her publications in Australian social and cultural history include numerous entries in the Australian Dictionary of Biography. She has also been a contributor to the Wakefield Companion to South Australian History. She is currently working on aspects of the history of Eyre Peninsula, where she was born and spent her first fourteen years. Susan Sheridan is Professor Emerita in Humanities at Flinders University and a member of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. She has published widely on women's writing, feminist cultural studies and Australian cultural history.

After six turbulent years, the disCovery of two large deposits of copper at Kapunda (1843/1844) and Burra (1844/1845) renewed the Colony’s eConomic prospeCts. Over the 1845-1850 period, SA supplied 8-9 perCent of the world’s Copper production. Immigration to SA from Britain soared, with the colony’s population more than tripling between 1844 and 1851. We augment the Beine et al. (2015) model of an eConomy with a booming resource seCtor to inCorporate endogenous immigration, and use its comparative statics to frame our empiriCal investigation of the boom’s effects on the export of other traded goods and worker living standards. Using newly developed SA wage and priCe series for this period, we find modest increases in SA living standards, inCreases in the export of wool and wheat, and a larger share of the labor forCe working in the non-traded goods seCtor. Finally, we conclude that the decision by Governor Grey to forCe broad ownership of the “monster” Burra mine and the use of rents from the booming seCtor to subsidize immigration helped SA avoid the Corruption and rent-seeking assoCiated with other resourCe booms.

She had died eight days earlier at the nearby home she shared with her partner of more than four decades and fellow historian Beverley (Bev) Kingston. Professor Emerita of Modern History at Macquarie University, Jill received many honours, including Officer of the Order of Australia, Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia, Fellow of the Federation of Australian Historical Societies, Emeritus Curator at the State Library of New South Wales and the Australian Dictionary of Biography Medal.1 Speakers at the funeral discussed her varied achieve- ments encompassing teaching, research, scholarship, writing, leadership in collabora- tive projects, and service to community and professional organisations.

    The Uniqueness of the BlackWords Resource: Memoir of an Indexer IRENE HOWE AustLit, University of Queensland Since its launch in 2007 BlackWords has enjoyed strong Indigenous leadership and a dedicated Indigenous team, allowing Indigenous storytellers, academics and researchers to determine its look, content, and scope. The BlackWords team of researchers and indexers is a community consisting of individuals from across institutions such as the University of Queensland, the University of Western Australia, Flinders University, the University of Sydney, the University of Wollongong and AIATSIS, each of whom has brought their own expertise and specialist interest to the database (BlackWords; Holt; Kilner 62). In a sense, Indigenous control of BlackWords falls within the context of the traditional Aboriginal kinship system. BlackWords has had many mothers, fathers, aunties, uncles, sisters, brothers, cousins and non-Indigenous members, who have nurtured it from its early establishment. Within this relationship, they represent the national team consisting of national coordinators and research assistants. This extended family are those people who are members and/or descendants of diverse Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island groups and communities as distant as Western Australia and the Torres Straits Islands. The non-Indigenous, or those with no blood relations, come in the form of the cross-cultural connection between BlackWords and AustLit. For example, Joan Keating, a Senior Researcher and Content Editor from AustLit, gave valuable help to the BlackWords team. From its establishment in 2006, she contributed her knowledge, guidance, training and skills, providing information on bibliographic protocols, and indexing procedures. Kerry Kilner, in her role as Director of AustLit, has also been instrumental in the establishment and continued development of BlackWords.

(Register, 7 October 1861, page 3c) Wabricoola - A property North -East of Black Rock; see pastoral lease no. 1634. Waddikee - A town, 32 km South-West of Kimba, proclaimed on 14 July 1927, took its name from the adjacent well and rock called wadiki where J.C. Darke was killed by Aborigines on 24 October 1844. Waddikee School opened in 1942 and closed in 1945. Aboriginal for ‘wattle’. ( See Darke Peak, Pugatharri & Koongawa, Hundred of) Waddington Bluff - On section 98, Hundred of Waroonee, probably recalls James Waddington, described as an ‘overseer of Waukaringa’. Wadella - A school near Tumby Bay in the Hundred of Hutchison opened on 1 July 1914 by Jessie Ormiston; it closed in 1926. Wadjalawi - A tea tree swamp in the Hundred of Coonarie, west of Point Davenport; an Aboriginal word meaning ‘bull ant water’. Wadmore - G.W. Goyder named Wadmore Hill, near Lyndhurst, after George Wadmore, a survey employee who was born in Plymouth, England, arrived in the John Woodall in 1849 and died at Woodside on 7 August 1918. W.R. Wadmore, Mayor of Campbelltown, was honoured in 1972 when his name was given to Wadmore Park in Maryvale Road, Campbelltown.

As a prime mover of Writers' Week and the Adelaide Festival of Arts, and founding co-editor of Australian Letters (1957–68) and Australian Book Review (1961- ), both magazines based in Adelaide, Dutton was central to the city's post-war cultural initiatives. He was associated with the University of Adelaide, where he studied for a year before enlisting (another magazine, Angry Penguins, appeared controversially there that same year, 1940) and later taught. He was one of the English Department's lively cohort of writers and scholars who were enthusiastic about Australian and other 'new' literatures. From Adelaide, Dutton played important national roles too, as editor at the newly formed Penguin Australia, co-founder of Sun Books, publisher at Macmillan and editor of the Bulletin's literary supplement. W ciągu następnych Ronda Wiatraczna kursuje dodatkowa linia trzech lat w naszym mieście ma tramwajowa nr 77. Może dzięki temu uda nam się stanąć 1580 nowych wiat bardziej zadbać o frekwencję i mniej spóźniać do przystankowych. Pierwszą z nich szkoły? odsłonięto 27 października 2014 roku. Bruce Beaver 2 Introduction For critics of recent contemporary Australian poetry, the term 'New Poetry' sug• gests primarily the work of those poets published in John Tranter's 1979 anthology, The New Australian Poetry.1 According to Tranter these twenty-four poets, only two of whom are women, formed a 'loose group'2 of writers associated with various poetry readings, little magazines and small presses in Sydney and Melbourne during the late sixties and seventies.3 Although there were many little magazines and small presses associated with the period, and earlier anthologies which had gathered together achievements of the New Poets,4 to a significant extent Tranter's anthology has circumscribed for critics the boundaries of the New Poetry group, and those poets published in the anthology have attracted a measure of critical acclaim.
