Kasper Kepsu, Department of Philosophy, History, Culture and Art Studies, PB 59, FI-00014 University of Helsinki, Finland Abstract: The Troublesome Province. Reduction, Tax Farming and Peasant Resistance in Swedish Ingria at the End of the 17th Century The Swedish province of Ingria, located at the far end of the Gulf of Finland, was in the 17th century a turbulent region with great ethnic and cultural diversity. This thesis examines the position of the province in the Swedish Empire, mainly by investigating the relations between peasants and authorities, particularly the peasant unrest. The significance of the province is discussed also through other themes, such as the reduction of the estates, the initiation of tax farming, the manorial economy, the character of Ingria as a border region, and the objective of the Swedish authorities to unify its provinces to the realm. Sweden was a typical conglomerate state that comprised different territories.
