The Portuguese Guitar: History and Transformation of an Instrument Associated with Fado
THE PORTUGUESE GUITAR: HISTORY AND TRANSFORMATION OF AN INSTRUMENT ASSOCIATED WITH FADO NUNO JOSÉ DOS SANTOS ANAIA CRISTO A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO JANUARY 2014 © Nuno José dos Santos Anaia Cristo 2014 ABSTRACT Since the mid-nineteenth century the Portuguese guitar has been connected to the fado genre. Over the years, both the instrument and the song genre have experienced significant transformations, at times related to aesthetic changes, at other times conditioned by social, political and economic alterations. This thesis focuses on the historic organological development of the Portuguese guitar, as an instrument associated with fado, and explores how the Lisbon guitar model has been progressively replaced by the Coimbra guitar model (both in practice and iconic symbolism). I argue that this tendency is related to the current new era of Portuguese guitar practice with its origins in the post-revolutionary period lived in Portugal after the political overthrow in 1974. We have highlighted various artists and subjects in the Review and these articles should give you information and a feel for each album. We have gathered some of the finest writers in blues music to contribute their ideas and insights. Chris Smith, Neil Slaven and Ray Templeton are three of the most respected names in blues critique. After each introductory paragraph to a subject you will find the author’s name. He has written all the reviews in that area unless another writer’s name is included. No primeiro capítulo é apresentada a instituição onde foi realizado o estágio pedagógico inserido no Mestrado em Ensino da Música. É retratada a instituição acolhedora - Conservatório de Música do Porto - explicada a sua história, importância cultural e são apontados os seus documentos orientadores: projeto educativo, regulamento interno e programa da disciplina de canto. No segundo capítulo é descrito o percurso efetuado enquanto estagiário ao longo do ano letivo 2017/18, descrevendo as planificações efetuadas, observações das aulas lecionadas, atividades dinamizadas pela classe de canto, principais obstáculos e conclusões obtidas. Com o projeto de investigação pretende-se apresentar uma reflexão sobre a utilização da canção tradicional portuguesa no ensino básico do canto e faz-se uma seleção destas canções com interesse pedagógico relevante. -

GEORGIA — I’M GONNA MAKE YOU HAPPY Georgia: I’m Gonna Make You Happy English convicts, militant Scottish Highlanders, German religious refugees, and slaves brought directly from Africa carved out in Georgia a harsh and often impoverished agricultural life.. Racial conflict and repression lasted in Georgia until late into the 20th century, but the state produced some of the stellar figures in Black music and American literary history, and nurtured the Sea Islands, where African-based ways of life and music- making went on relatively peacefully until the 1960s. These pioneering recordings made in the 1930s and 1940s feature Blind Willie McTell, Buster Brown, and great but lesser-known artists such as Reese Crenshaw, Camp Morris, the Smith Band, Sidney Stripling, Sophie Wing performing blues, ballads, folk ragtime, 19th century dance tunes, spirituals, and work songs. Deep River of Song These field recordings of African-American music made by Alan Lomax and John A. Lomax for the Library of Congress from 1933 to 1946 capture a transformative period when black singers of the South and the Caribbean created a new musical language and thousands of brilliant songs that would captivate people throughout the world. Introduction The Georgia Crawl by Jack L. Sammons * Imagine, if you will, that you are a lawyer and that you are observing a gathering of people sitting at a round table. The assembled group is there addressinga particularlydifficult problem in the local community-it does not really matter what the problem is so long as it is a complex one. The group includes a priest, an accountant, a business executive, a psychologist, an engineer, a philosopher,a physician, a city planner,an architect, and a lawyer; but you do not know the occupationsof any of the people. If I asked you to identify the lawyer, my guess is that you could do so readily, even if the conversation had not afforded the lawyer the opportunity to display his or her knowledge of legal matters. In fact, if I pressed you harder, and the conversation was long enough, you probably would be able to give me some gross assessment of the lawyer's merit as a lawyer The reason you would be able to do this is that the practice of law shapes lawyers toward certain habits of thought and manners of being that lawyers then recognize in each other.
