CHESHIRE, Oi'N E of the western counties of England, is a county palatine, bounded on the north by the Irish Sea, and the countlfav of Lanca.ster and York ; on the east by the counties of Derby and Stafford} on the south by the eounly of Salop, i^od on the west by the counties of Flint and Denbiglfc; about 50 miles long and 25 brond; divided into seven hundreds, which contain 101 parishes, one city, eleven market towns, 670 villages, and according to the agricultural survey, contains about 676,000 acres. The general appearance of Cheshire is that of an extended plain, and is, for the most part, a flat country; whence it has obtained thename of the P'ale Royal of England. On the eastern side there i« a range of mountainous country, connected with the Derbyshire and Yorkshire hills, of about 25 miles in length and 5 in breadth, extending from near Conglctoa to the north eastern extremity of the county. From Macclesfiuld, in a north western direction, the .surface is irregular and hilly; but continues of that description no further than Alderley, aboujt five or six miles from Macclesfield. On the Shropshire sides the surface is likewise broken and irregular; and about ten miles east from Chester there is another range of hills between the rivers Dee and Mersey, extending about 25 miles from Malpas, on the south side of the county. About a mile to the south of Altrincham rises an elevated tract of ground, called Bowden Downs, which extends a considerable distance from east.to west; its western extremity is covered with the wood of Dunham Park. Bowden church is situated on the summit of this tract, from whence there is a most extensive view of a large pait of Cheshire and the southern part of Lancashire. The principal rivers are the Mersey and the Dee ; these receive all the smaller rivers, viz. the Weaver, the D.nne, the Whcelock, the Goyte, and the Boiling. Cheshire also abounds with broad sheets of water, denominated meres, lakes and pools, and is intersected by portions of four canals, which allow a very constant and cheap intercourse between the towns of Chester, Liverpool and Manchester, the north of England. The diocese of Chester comprehends all Cheshire and Lancashire, and various paits of Westmoreland, Cum­ berland, Yorkshire, Denbighshire and Flintshire, and is divided into two archdeaconries. Immense quan­ tities of cheese are made in this county, of the best quality; ^he yearly export of which, to London only, has been computed at 14,000 tons, and to Bristol and York 8,000 more. There are also great quantities sent to Scotland, Ireland, &c. &c. The other productions are corn, excellent salt, coal, iron ore, mill­ stones, timber, &c, &c. Though a borough and market-town, it Is (of itself) no parish, but has a chapel of ease, under the vicarage of Bowden, a small village about a mile distant. It has several chapels and meeting-houses for dissenters of different denomi­ nations; also two Sunday-schools, in addition to which there is one at Bowden, conducted on the national plan, A court-leet is held here by the Right Honourable the Earl of Stamford and Warrington, at which the Mayor of the boroup:h, and other municipal officers are appointed for the whole barony of Dunham- Massey. Market-day Tuesday—Fairs April 29, August 5, and November 23, for cattle, drapery, &c. The population according to the last Census is 2302.

CONGLETON S a borough town, but its burgesses are not possessed of the elective franchise, consequently return no repre.sentativI c to Parliament. It 18 pleasantly situated on the south side of the river Dane, it is in the parish of Astbury, the hundred of Northwich, and the diocese pf Chester. It is a clean, airy town, and contains according^ to the population returns in 1821, 1,212 houses and 6,400 inhabitants. It has a charter of incorporation granted by Henry de Lacy in 1310, and is governed by a mayor, eight aldermen, sixteen common council men, a recorder, town clerk, and other inferior officers. The town was formerly celebra­ ted for the manufacture of tagged leather laces, called Congleton points, but its principal trade at present consists of throwing silk, spinning cotton, and weaving of ribbons, which gives employment to u{Awards of 4,000 persons, including men, women, and children. The silk business was first established here by Nathaniel Pattison. Esq in 1754, and there are now upwards of thirty silk mills in the town and imme­ diate neighbourhood, one of them (the first erected in the place,) is with a few exceptions the largest in the. kingdom. There are also three cotton mills and several extensive weaving shops. It has a neat church, which is a cbapel of ease to the mother church at Astbury, a village about a mile di.ntant; and is one of the handsomest specimens of an old gothic church in this county. There are also places of worship for the Methodists, Calvinisls, and Unitarians, to each of which there is a commodious sunday .school. The town and neighbourhood are well supplied with excellent water, coals and lime. The market day is Satur­ day, the fairs are Thursday before Shrovetide, May 12, July 13, and Nov, 22. It is 161 miles N, VV. of London, by Lichfield, and 164 by Derby, 55 from Birmingham, 43 from Liverpool, 31 from Chester, 24 from Manchester, 18 from Nantwich, 16 from Northwich, 15 from Buxton, 14 from Ktmtsford, 12 from Newcastle, 10 from Leek, 10 from Middlewich, 8 from Macclesfield, and 7 from Sandbach.

The town consists principally of one spacious street, crossed by another at right angles. The chief trade of the place is salt. KNUTSFORD. Jl H E principal town of Bucklow hundred, in the county of Chester, is situated in a fine fertile country, 25 miles from Chester, Ui from Manchester, and 172 from London, and is on the great road between Lon­ don and Liverpool. This town is undoubtedly one of great antiquity, and the derivation of its name is traced to the circumstance of king Canute having crossed the brook Birken with his army, after a victory; hence it was called " Canute's lord,*' and afterwards *• Knutsford." k is now a handsome well-built town, divided into two parts, (Over and Nether Knutsford), by the brook Biiken, which rises about half a mile south of the town, passes under the turnpike road, and falls into Tatton Mere a short distance below. The principal business of this town is that of handicraft trades, and obtains much of its support from the public spirit and liberality of the opulent gentry residing in the neighbourhood, who are very numerous. The annual races also contribute both to the amusement and emolument of the inhabitants; and at that time the town is much enlivened by the presence of a great number of persons of rank and fashion. There is a handsome church, a modern structure of stone and brick, with a square tower steeple, containing six bells and a clock. There are also three meeting houses for dissenters, and two charity schools. There is also a large and convenient prison for the county, at the front of which is a beautiful and commodious sessions- house, where the quarter sessions are held at Midsummer and Michaelmas. The Market-day is on Saturday, but it is not much frequented. The fairs are held on Whit-Tuesday, the lOth of July, and the 8th of No­ vember, chiefly for horses and cattle. The population is upwards of 2000.

MACCLESFIELD, A TOWN of considerable trade inthe County of Chester, 18 miles from Manchester and 166 from Lon­ don. This place was incorporated by charter, granted in the year 1261, by Prince Edward, son of Henry the Third, then Earl of Chester. The old Church is a large gothic structure, founded by Edward the First and Eleanor his Queen, in 1279, many alterations have been made since that psriod, aud it was nearly re­ built in 1740. The new Church built by the late Charles Roe, Esq. is a regular and elegant pile of building, and was erected in little mors than six months. The free grammar school was endowed by Edward the Sixth, with houses and land to the amount of 25/, per annum ; but this property now produces about 500/. perannlim. Here are also three alms-houses for poor widows, and two handsome recenlly-crected Sunday Schools. The corporation consists of twenty-four aldermen, one of whom is a mayor and'justice of the quorum, assisted by a town clerk, who is always coroner for the borough, two Serjeants at mace, javelin bearers, &c. The mayor is also lord of the manor, and possesses the right of appointing the minister of the parochial church, Macclesfield may now be considered as the centra of the silk trade. Mills for the throwing of silk for weavers, and making sewing silk, are numerous and extensive, and contribute much to the increase and comfort of the neighbourhood. The regular trade was formerly in wrought buttons, of silk, mohair, and twist, but it has been declining some time. The cotton manufacture has been introduced hvre, und is now carried on to a very considerable extent. The hundred of Macclesfield is the most extensive of any in Cheshire, comprising the whole of its north-eastern side, and partaking of the wild and hilly character of the neighbouring parts of Derbyshire and Yorkshire. The town and borough according to the census of 1821 contains 17,746 inhabitants, viz. 8,421 males and 932.') females being an increase of 5447 since 1811 and 9003 since 1801. The hills in the neighbourhood produce considerable quantities of slate, flags, &c. and the town is well supplied with coal and water. MALPAS, A SMALL market town, in the Broxton hundred of the county of Chester, from whence it is disiant 15 miles, and from London 166, It is a place of no great trade, being situated in a great farming district. The 16 MALPAS. €f)tfsi)ivt* trades carried on here derive their support chiefly from the surrounding neighbourhood. The Church is a very ancient edifice, situated on "an eminence, commanding a beautiful view of the surrounding country, and endowed with an ample revenue which supports two rectors. The circumstance which gave rise tothis singularly plural appointment, is by tradition thus accounted for:—King James upon one of his journies, travelling incog, stopped at the house now called the Red Lion Inn; the bouse was frequented in the even­ ings by the most opulent and respectable part of th^ inhabitants, among whom were the rector and curate of the parish. The King entered most familiarly into their conversation, and enjoyed the hilarity of the even­ ing, to which he himself contributed in no small degree; when the company were about to separate, the cu­ rate (whether from the dictate of a pure and liberal spirit, or whether by bis sagacity he had discovered about James some hidden mark of royalty, tradition does not say) proposed to the company, that they should confer upon ^/t« «/rang-&r some mark of their hospitality, such as, that he should be exempt from paying any part of the evening's expences and so forth ; this was agreed to by the whole company except the rector, who insisted that every tub should stand upon its own staves, with several other expressions, which convinced James that there were better rectors in the kingdom than the then rector of Malpas, and laying by his disguise, he pronounced to them as their King, that from thenceforth the curate should also be a rector, and enjoy the same privileges and emoluments. As James was not the president of the evening, it cannot be supposed that the chair in which he sat was distinguished from the rest, but from the circum­ stance of the King having sat in it, it was preserved, and is at this day placed in the hall of the said Inn, and is a curious specimen of chair-making in those days. The Scottish chair exhibited in Westminster Ab­ bey, and for sitting in which you must pay a fee, does not exceed this in strength or beauty, and yet in this chair any plebian may sit without paying any fee, and the writer of this article (taking advantage of that circumstance) drew up these few facts in the very chair on wnich King James sat. MIDDLEWK.H, .^ TOWN of considerable antiquity, in the county of Chester, is situated near the confluence of the rivers Dane and Croke. Its name is derived from being the middlemo.< of the Wiches, or Salt-towns; and its origin has been supposed as remote as the time of the Romans, The town is tolerably well built, and has a very respectable and agreeable appearance. The government of the town is vested in a nun^ber of bur­ gesses, and its privileges are nearly the samo as those enjoyed by the other Salt-towns. Being situated in a great farming district, the trades carried on here derive their chief support from the surrounding neigh­ bourhood. The church is a large and handsome structure, and the vicarage comprehends several townships. It has also chapels for dissenters, and a meeting-house for the society of friends. Is distant from Chester 20 miles, and 166 from London. The market is on Tuesday.—The fairs are April 25th. August 5th, and Oc­ tober 29tb. The population is upwards of 2000.

In the county of Chester, is situated near the borders of Staffordshire and Shropshire, on the banks of the river Wecver; and is the capital of the hundred of the same name. The government of the town was anciently exercised by the lord of the manor, but it is now governed by constables. The inhabitants carry on a considerable trade in cheese, of which the finest is made in the immediate neighbour­ hood of the town. The chief manufacture of the place is shoes, which are principally sold to the London and Manchester dealers ; there is also a small manufactory of gloves. The cotton manufacture has also made some progress here. The church is a handsome Gothic structure, built in the form of a cross with an oc­ tangular tower in the middle. The living is a small vicarage. In the town are also chapels for dissenters of different denominations, two free schools, thirteen alms-houRCS, and a commodious workhouse.—The market is on Saturday.—New Market first Saturaay after the 2nd February.—Fairs, March 26, September 4th, and December 4th. The Hundred or Wapentake Court and Court Leet for Wirrall are held at the office of Messrs. Williams and Noble, J. Williams is also Lord Paramount of the hundred, by grant from the Crown, and consequently is entitled to all wrecks, &c. &c. within the Hundred. The market day is Friday, and the Fairs are 2d of February, Ist of May, and 29lh of September, and the population, according to the census of 1821, was 1418. About a mile and a quarter from Nestod is PARKGATE, which has of late years become a fashionable bathing place, and the inhabitants chiefly derive their support from the expenditure of the many visitants that reside here during the season. NORTHWICH PS a large ancient market town. In the eounty of Chester, situate on the conflux of the river Dane with the Weever. The streets are irregular, aud several of the houses are of great antiquity. The church, which is spacious, is remarkable for the singularity of its choir, which is semicircular, and the roof of the nave is ornamented with numerous figures of wicker baskets, of ac^imilar shape to those used in salt making. In the town are also chapels for dissenters of different denominations. Here is also a well endowed free grammar school, founded by Mr. John Da3nies, of St. Bartholomews, London. From its central situation, and the circumstance of its being surrounded with gentlemen's seats, this town has become a place of con- ilfderable resort for the transaction of public and other business. It has two annual fairs, which of late years have been much frequented, and thus been the source of great emolument to the inhabitants ; the lower classes of which are employed chiefly in the salt trade. Salt is manufactured on an extensive scale at several places in this county, but the greatest part of the trade is now concentrated in the neighbourhood of thistdwn. Here the salt is made from brine springs, as also from the natural rock; this latter peculiarity, and the advantageous situation of the town on the banks of the Weever, ou the great road from Chester to Manchester, and its contiguity to the Grand Trunk Canal, which has opened a source of cheap communi­ cation with so many parts of England, have all corrfbined to render Northwich pre-eminent for its salt trade. It is distant from Chester 18 miles, from Manchester 20, and 174 from London; the market is held on Friday ; the fairs, August 2d, and December 6th.

Not a vestige of it can be seen; but its scite is marked by the name of the Castle, given to a triangular piece of land, surrounded with a mound of earth, jutting out into the river, guarded on the water side by ledges of rocks, and broken precipices, and cut off from the I'.pa bya ditch six yards in width. The parochial church stands above the castle rock ; its foundation is (proTiatn^rco-eval with the castle, but was certainly prior to the conquest, since Nigol, baron of Halton, be­ stowed it on his brother Wolfrith, a priest, in the time of the Conqueror. In the succeeding reigns the con- ^quence of Runcorn decayed; and previous to the completion of the Duke of Bridgewater's Navigation, nrbich here communicates with the Mersey, it was but an obscure village; but has since been considerably increased by the erection of many dwelling-houses, inns, shops, &c. for the accommodation of the numer­ ous workmen and other persons attending the vast basons or reservoirs of water which supply the canal. A large warehouse has likewise been erected on a new plan, and various wharfs built for the accommodation of traders. The trade of the place has of late increased so much, that government have established a cus­ tom-bouse, and proclaimed it a free port. It has also lately become a place of resort for salt-water bathing; the fine air, the pleasantness of the neighbourhood, (particularly' Halton Castle) and the exhilirating effects of the busy scene upon the river, constituting useful auxiliaries to the effects of the bath. In the quarries here, which lie contiguous to the canal, large quantities of free-stone are procured, of a very excellent qua­ lity.—The market is held on Friday; the fairs, the last Friday in April and the last Friday in October.

SANDBACH, A. SMALL market town, in the county of Chester, is very pleasantly situated on an eminence near the little river Wheelock. It was made a market town in the seventeenth century, by its lord. Sir John Rad- cliff of Ordsall, Lancashire, whose ancestry had long posscKsed the manor. It was formerly famous for the goodness of its malt liquor; and worsted yarn, and stuffs for country wear, were manufactured in large quantities by its inhabitants ; but latterly its trade has considerably decreased. The church is a very ancient structure, and the market-cross appears to be still more so. Besides the church, there are chapels and meeting-houses for various sects of dissenters ; two Sunday schools and a national school. It is distant from Chester 25 miles, and 162 from London. The market is held on Thursday ; the fairs, Easter Tuesday and the first Thursday after the llth. of September,

STOCKPORT, xl. Principal manufacturing town in this couiity, is 179 miles from London, by Macclesfield, and seven from' Manchester. There is not in England a more irregular spot of ground than that on which this town stands. The market-place is commodious, but difficult of access, being on the summit of a hill, and the streets lead­ ing to it steep and narrow; yet greater quantities of corn, oatmeal, cheese, &c. are sold here on the market- day, Friday, than at any other market in the county. The progress of the trade of Stockport has been thus delineated by Dr, Aikin—** Here were erected some of the first mills for winding and throwing silk, on a plan procured from Italy. The persons concerned in the silk factories were reckoned the principal people in the place ; but ou the decline of this trade the machinery was applied to cotton-spinning, and the different branches of the cotton manufacture are now the chief staple of the town. The people of Stockport first en­ gaged in tho spinning of reeled weft, then in weaving checks, and lastly fustians—and the general cotton •'^e' is'now very considerable. The making of hats is likewise a considerable branch of employment." To this may be added, that few towns in the kingdom have carried the spirit of industry and improvement to a greater extent than Stockport; and that its manufactures now hold a principal rank in all the markets in the country. The removal of articles of traffic is much facilitated by a canal to Manchester; which, uniting with the Duke of Bridgewater's at that place, communicates with most of the navigable rivers and canals in the kingdom. Busy and active in trade as the inhabitants of this town are known to be, they are not indifferent to the best interests and feelings of humanity. By their exertions, one of the most extensive Sunday-school establishments in England is liberally and admirably supported—a large and commodious room has been erected, and many children here receive the rudiments of religious and moral instruction. A free grammar school was founded here in 1487. There are also six alms-houses for six poor men, inhabitants of Stock­ port ; and an auxiliary Bible society has been established. There are two churches, and various raeeting- lio^!ses for dissenters. The old church has been recently taken down, and is now rebuilt, in a very hand­ some stile; and in Heaton Norris there is an elegant new chapel, called Heaton Chapel: it has an excellent organ, and was built by the subscriptions of a few individuals, the most forward of whom were the Howard family. The population of Stockportand neigh­ bourhood, according to the census of 1821, is as follows, viz. the town of Stockport 21,726; Heaton Norris 6268 ; Portwood 2124; Edgley 2458; making a total of 33,356, Market-day, Friday.
