A movie “Searching for Bobby Fischer” was made about two of the times he disappeared. Although there are many books about Bobby Fischer, this is the only one that deals in depth with his second, in 1992, match against Boris Spassky and the one that explores in greatest depth his playing style and thought process. In The Chess of Bobby Fischer, the author employs his long experience as a chess analyst to transform the technique and insight of the greatest player of all time into a unique teaching tool. This, he shows, is how a great player wins games. Robert Burger first got to know Bobby as a precocious youngster when, in 1957, Fischers mother called him to ask if he would watch over Bobby in San Francisco at the U.S. Junior Championship. As a director of The Mechanics Institute, where the tournament was held, Burger was also familiar to the participants as the co-editor of The California Chess Reporter. A National Master, Burger also has the distinction of being a grandmaster of chess composition, of the U.S. Chess Problem Society. He is also a Fellow of the British Chess Problem Society and the author of numerous nonfiction books. Among his other chess books are Grandmaster Chess and The Unknown Tal. He has reported on chess tourneys and matches throughout Europe. Among his collaborators on chess books have been Isaac Kashdan and Vladimir Nabokov (yes, that one!). The current edition of this classic is the most complete, referencing the second Fischer- Spassky match -- in Yugoslavia in 1992. Burger has always maintained that the real Bobby was among the most generous and statesmanlike of grandmasters, with this anecdote as an example: In 1964, when Bobby made his first, great tour of the United States following his sweep of the U.S. Championship, Burger was one of thirty players in a simul at Mechanics Institute in San Francisco. On the twelfth move, Fischer resigned after seeing that he had lost a piece. Robert Burger is especially noted for the one game, his win against Bobby Fischer in 1964. I consider myself a chess enthusiast and this is a great book that uses Fischers games to illustrate different kinds of tactical, strategic, and endgame principals so you can apply them to your own games. In my opinion, Fischer is arguably the greatest player of all time and this book gives great insight into his mind and way of thinking. Although I never reached the great heights of the chess world that Fischer did, studying this book greatly improved my chess understanding and play. 168 The Bobby Fischer I Knew and Other Stories Dutchman who did not drink beer. He also surprised my wife Nina by showing up with flowers at the Lenox Hill Hospital just before she gave birth to my son Mitchell. I hadn't said peep, but he had his quiet ways of finding out. Max was quiet in another way. He never discussed his heroism during the Nazi occupation. Yet not only did he write letters to Alekhine asking the latter to intercede on behalf of the Dutch martyrs, Dr. Gerard Oskam and Salo Landau, he also put his life or at least his liberty on the line for several others. I learned of one instance from Max's friend, Hans Kmoch, the famous in-house annotator at AI Horowitz's Chess Review. Hans was living at the time on Central Park West somewhere in the Eighties. His wife Trudy, a Jew, had constant nightmares about her interrogations and beatings in Holland by the Nazis. Hans had little money, and Trudy spent much of the day in bed screaming. Enter Nina. My wife was working in the New York City welfare system and managed to get them part-time assistance. Hans then confided in me about how Dr. E greased palms and used his in fluence to save Trudy's life by keeping her out of a concentration camp. But mind you, I heard this from Hans, not from Dr. E, who was always Max the mum about his good deeds. Mr. President In 1970, Max Euwe was elected president of FIDE, a position he held until 1978.

Supplement COLORADO STATE CHESS ASSOCIATION August 2018 COLORADO CHESS INFORMANT Bobby Fischer’s Visits to Colorado Supplement Colorado Chess Informant August 2018 COLORADO CHESS HISTORY - BOBBY FISCHER’S VISITS by National Master Todd Bardwick This supplement to the Informant is an attempt to give a detailed historical account of Bobby Fischer’s visits to Colorado for current and future generations. I have written many articles about it in the Rocky Mountain News over the 17 years I wrote for the newspaper. (To find thoses articles, you can go to www.ColoradoMasterChess.com and click on the Articles link.) This became a much bigger project that I originally anticipated as the list of people to talk to grew. It became a real life “Searching for Bobby Fischer”, just 47 years later. My research on the subject started back in the early to mid 1990s while visiting John Howell. John’s contributions to Colorado chess as an organizer where monumental. I realized that the stories he told were of huge historical significance to the history of Colorado chess. Today, I wish my notes of our conversations were even more detailed and, looking back, there is a lot more I would like to ask him. John passed away on March 7, 2000 at the age of 88. Cathy Howell, John’s daughter, recently helped me to fill in some of the blanks, provided a copy of some of the notes from John’s diaries (he kept a detailed diary for most days of his adult life!), and gave me chess articles and photos from his files dating back into the 1960s which are posted on the History Section of the Colorado State Chess Association website.

  • 16. National Master Bruce Monson Reads Bent Larsen's Memories of the 1966 Piatigorsky Cup
    16. National Master Bruce Monson Reads Bent Larsen's Memories of the 1966 Piatigorsky Cup National Master Bruce Monson, born 1967, has long been known as one of the best players in Colorado where he works as a firefighter. The author of a book on the Belgrade Gambit and a contributor to Pasadena 1932, Monson is known as an outstanding chess archivist skilled at finding long lost historical information. He is currently at work on books on the Piatigorsky Cups and Herman Steiner. Here, he reads Bent Larsen’s reminiscences about the 1966 Piatigorsky Cup tournament. Bent Larsen was one of the greatest chess players in the world in the 1960s and 1970s, qualifying for the Candidate Matches four times and reaching the semi-finals on three occasions. His fearless style was perfect for winning tournaments and was particularly successful in the late 1960s which led him to be placed on board 1 for the world ahead of Bobby Fischer in its match with the U.S.S.R. in 1970. Larsen was not only a great player, but also an outstanding writer. His book, Larsen’s Selected Games of Chess: 1948-1969, is recognized as a classic. Bruce Monson: The title of his essay is Oh Yes, I Remember It Well, and he is referring to Maurice Chevalier who sang also with a French accent. So the title, he says, is his and [he writes], “For Jacqueline, I wish you a long life. You have music and chess and that’s already a good beginning.” Oh Yes, I Remember It Well It was my second visit to the United States.
