Contemporary Congregation Olam Tikvah www.olamtikvah.org Volume 58, Number 3 3800 Glenbrook Road Fairfax, Virginia 22031 March, 2021 Helping Each of Us Fight Anti-Semitism with Love and Matzah by Marnie Fienberg OT has helped nurture and grow a local nonprofit – 2 for Seder! Our origins lie with the Shooting at the Pittsburgh Tree of Life in 2018, and we were founded in January 2019 by OT member Marnie Fienberg and Lauren Kline. 2 for Seder’s mission is to empower individuals to fight back against anti-Semitism. Influenced by Tikkun Olam, we seek to fight back by building bridges to our neighbors.

Did you know that more than 50% of Americans have never knowingly met anyone Jewish (AJC 2020 survey)? Yet they are barraged with jokes, hate speech and ever- evolving stereotypes. To meet this challenge, we ask every Jewish adult to reach out to those who do not know first-hand about the Jewish faith. By building bridges in your own outer circles, you counter the stereotypes, tropes and hatred. We have two programs to help make this easy for you!

2 for Seder - Fighting Hate with Love and Matzah If you only can do one thing to fight anti-Semitism this year, do 2 for Seder!W e ask all Jews to invite 2 people to their first Seder. This provides an immersive Jewish experience and a positive counterpoint to negative messages.

2 for Seder Take Action Newsletter How can you be creative about fighting hate with love throughout the year? Take Action is a free weekly newsletter providing ideas and inspirations on simple ways to make an impact for everyone from 7 to 70.

MishloachAugust/September Manot 2020 Thank Yous from JoannePage Stryer 2 Despite the pandemic and intermittent ice storms, over 70 volunteers managed to stuff envelopes, assemble bags, and deliver treats and greetings to over 530 congregants. Without their efforts, none of this would have happened. Thank you to each and every one of you.

Speaking of thank yous: Todah rabah to Melissa Benson and Erin Dreyfuss from the office, who kept track of all the requests, route changes, questions and more questions, and were always there when we needed some help or advice. Packing mishloach manot, photo by Dan Noble

Last, but certainly not least, a really high-five to all of you who kept the OT tradition going. Not only did you keep the community connected, helped Olam Tikvah coffers, but this year for the first time, we made a donation to Capital Caring Health Grief Center in Falls Church.

Beverly Redler, Leona Shoon and I are pleased that we could coordinate this great effort.

Ezra is a 7th grade ACE student at Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School where he plays the euphonium in the Symphonic band. Ezra loves anything that's a competition -- from traditional sports to competitive eating. Ezra recently finished his little league baseball career and can't wait to play for his new travel team, the Falls Church Colts. Ezra attends Capital Camps and is excited for his younger brother, Noam, to have a Jewish overnight camp experience this summer. Ezra loves all DC sports teams, playing basketball or video games with friends, and binge watching Marvel movies with his family. Ezra's Bar Mitzvah project is a "donut run" to raise funds for the Boys and Girls Club of America: Just CLICK HERE to visit his page!

Andrew Louis Baker March 13 Parashat Vayakel-Pekudei Andrew Louis Baker, son of Barbara & Jordan, brother of Matthew, is a 7th grader at Lake Braddock Secondary School. Andy enjoys practicing with his Lego Robotics team, working on his taekwondo skills, and playing the trumpet. Hobbies include woodworking, creating his own electronic dance music, and tinkering with various audio mixing and broadcasting tools. For his Bar Mitzvah project, Andy is raising money for Camp Ramah New England’s scholarship fund, so he can help share the joy of Camp Ramah with others. We are excited to celebrate Andy’s Bar Mitzvah with friends and family all over the country, both in-person and through the livestream.

Dean Tepler Borenstein March 20 Parashat Vayikra Son of Jeff & Leela Borenstein and big brother to Ari, Dean is a 7th grader at Thoreau Middle School where his favorite subject is math. Dean is passionate about sports; he plays soccer year round with his Vienna Eagles travel team, as well as lacrosse and swim team. Dean also loves reading and enjoys playing the electric guitar. Dean looks forward to sharing his special day with the Olam Tikvah community, friends and family, including his 7 cousins (all boys!) both virtually and in-person. New Member Spotlight Welcome to some of our new members! Although we haven't been able to schmooze with them at lunch or invite them over for Shabbat dinner, we welcome them to Olam Tikvah.

Oakton residents Josh and Dani Fein were looking for a community- and family-oriented synagogue and found Olam Tikvah! They both grew up in Maryland and moved to Virginia after grad school, where their family has grown to include Lanie (8) and Caleb (6), who will be attending OTRS and Machar activities. The family loves to be active, especially outdoors, and count hiking, taekwondo, SoulCycle, running, skiing, and horseback riding among their hobbies. They’re interested in getting involved in Sisterhood, ABBA, Men’s Club, and community service activities.

Jeffrey and Elizabeth Sherer moved to Vienna (Dunn Loring) this July from Frankfurt, Germany. They originally hail from Lehigh Valley, PA and Catskills, NY, though the DC area has been their home base on and off for almost 20 years. They’ll be joined at OT by their two children, Naomi (8) and Ezra (5), who will attend Stenwood Elementary and OTRS.
