ACRYLICS – Suggested Supply List – 2016 Julie Gilbert Pollard, Instructor 602-448-6195 [email protected] www.JulieGilbertPollard.com

ACRYLICS USED LIKE WATERCOLOR – (TRANSPARENT & DILUTED - more or less)

COLORS: Acrylic being so well suited as an experimental medium, I’m constantly trying out different colors, brands, mediums, etc., including Golden High Flow. Therefore this list may change without notice! Although it is not necessary for you to have the same colors/brand that I use, I normally use the Golden Fluid Acrylics listed. The 3 shown in (also underlined) should suffice for a start:

Hansa Yellow Pyrrole Red Light Cobalt Nickel Azo Yellow Quinacridone Magenta Blue Pyrrole Orange (Transparent or regular) Permanent Violet Dark Phthalo Blue Dioxazine Turquois (Phthalo)

BRUSHES—bring your favorites—these are mine:

● Small round brush—I use a bamboo Sumi brush (Royal B 2) ● 1” or ¾“ (or even wider if you like) flat “aquarelle” brush ● I also use an assortment of “retired” watercolor brushes

ACRYLICS USED LIKE OILS – (THICK & OPAQUE - more or less)

COLORS: It is not necessary for you to have the same colors/brands that I use. I normally use a variety of different brands (including Golden Open Acrylics when I require slower drying time). Here is my “basic” list of heavy body acrylic colors:

Titanium White Titan Buff or Unbleached Titanium Milky White Primary Yellow Primary Red or Primary Magenta Primary Transparent Yellow Perinone or Cadmium Orange Dioxazine Purple Naples Yellow Napthol Red Light Indian Yellow Quinacridone Magenta Cerulean Blue Hue Jaune Brillant or Naples Yellow Reddish Phthalo

BRUSHES & PALETTE KNIVES—bring your favorites—these are mine:

● I often paint with an approximately 1" long painting/palette knife ● I use old, “retired” watercolor and oil painting brushes in a variety of sizes, including natural bristle and nylon.

MEDIUMS & GROUNDS

There are so many acrylic products on the market – too many for me to have even tried, much less, to recommend. And, again, it’s not necessary for you to have every product listed here either, but I find the following useful:

● Golden Airbrush Medium ● Matte Medium – no particular brand ● Golden Acrylic Glazing Liquid (Satin) ● Liquitex Slow-Dri Blending Medium (a retarding fluid) or other brand of retarding fluid ● Fine Pumice Gel ● Final Varnish or Sealer – no particular brand

SUPPORT

● For acrylic-used-as-watercolor on canvas, use Yes! Multi-media Canvas or Fredrix Watercolor Canvas. (Use pre-stretched canvases or canvas boards in these brands. OR these brands are also available in pads of individual sheets which must be stapled to Gator Board.) ● Stretched canvas primed for acrylic or oil. When using a canvas not specifically for watercolor, use only with full strength acrylics or mixed with medium (meaning: NOT for acrylic-used-as-watercolor using acrylic diluted with plain water). ● 100% rag, 140# cold press - such as Canson Moulin du Roy (CP or rough), Lanaquarelle, etc. or Arches 300# CP ● 11x14 or 16x20 are usually the largest comfortable sizes for a classroom setting.

MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

● Paper palette in a Masterson “wet palette” – only use water permeable paper palette, not the shiny-surface kind ● LARGE water container with Bob Ross Brush Cleaning Screen inserted ● 2B drawing pencils, or personal choice and a pencil sharpener ● “Vanish” eraser (Jerry’s Artorama), “click eraser”, gum eraser or kneadable eraser ● Sketch book, 6x8 is fine—along with pencils and sharpener ● Spray bottle - I use eyeglasses cleaner spray bottles for their fine mist spray ● White facial tissues or paper towels ● Drawing board if using paper- stretch wet and staple to Gator Board ● Old towel, bath size or larger ● Apron ● Disposable latex or nitrile gloves - OPTIONAL ● Tracing paper ● Wet Media Acetate – optional but extremely useful – http://www.dickblick.com/products/grafix-dura-lar-wet-media-film/ ● Small Fredrix real canvas tablet for studies and exercises ● Hair dryer ● Small table easel or use the freestanding easel provided in the classroom

EXPANDED LIST of COLORS

If you already have acrylics and simply want to expand your palette, I suggest some of the ones I’ve shown in red. I find that these colors which are pre-mixed to a lighter value make it a lot easier to get the correct values rather than values that are too dark. There are so many others you can try – these are the ones I currently use:

Master’s Touch (heavy body in tubes) – available at Hobby Lobby:

Dark Titanium White – similar to Titan Buff or Unbleached Titanium Milky White Naples Yellow Flesh Purple Red Light Magenta Purple Light Purple Grey Purple Pale Blue Ocean

Liquitex Basics (heavy body in tubes):

Light Portrait Pink Light Blue Violet Bright Green

Grumbacher Academy (heavy body in tubes):

Cerulean Blue Hue Naples Yellow (this is a very different color from the Master’s Touch Naples Yellow listed above)

Golden Open Acrylics differ from regular acrylics in that they stay wet MUCH longer than regular heavy body acrylics. I’m not sure I really like them to be honest - I’m still experimenting so please don’t take this list as a recommendation but you should know about them. They can be mixed with other types of acrylic colors. These are the colors I presently have:

Titanium White Transparent Red Iron Oxide Cobalt Blue Titan Buff Pyrrole Red Cerulean Blue, Chromium Naples Yellow Hue Quinacridone Magenta Manganese Blue Hue Hansa Yellow Opaque Alizarin Crimson Hue Nickel Azo Yellow Indian Yellow Hue
