  • Grape Disease Control 2018
GRAPE DISEASE CONTROL, 2018 Bryan Hed, Department of Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology, Penn State University, Lake Erie Regional Grape Research and Extension Center, North East PA 16428 ([email protected]) As many of you know Wayne Wilcox, who has annually provided us with an incredibly thorough grape disease management update each spring, has retired. Filling Wayne's shoes is going to be a tall task to say the least, and the search for his replacement goes on. For now, I will attempt to provide a brief summary of some of the pertinent changes in grape disease control that I hope will be useful for grape growers in the 2018 season. For consistency, I'll roughly be using Wayne's format from his previous newsletter from June of 2017. FUNGICIDE CHANGES, NEWS, & REVIEWS Here is some new, and sort of new information regarding grape fungicides in 2018. First, Aprovia/Aprovia Top. The active ingredient in Aprovia is solatenol (benzovindiflupyr), and while it does not represent a new chemical class for us grape growers (succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor or SDHI) it is one of those 'new generation' SDHIs that Wayne spoke of last year. The SDHI fungicides belong to FRAC Group 7, which also includes chemistries in products like Endura and Pristine (boscalid) and Luna Experience (fluopyram). Aprovia was available for use in most states last year, but has now been labeled for use in New York as well. As a solo product, Aprovia is very effective for the control of powdery mildew as trials in NY over several years have shown.

  • Outline of Angiosperm Phylogeny
Outline of angiosperm phylogeny: orders, families, and representative genera with emphasis on Oregon native plants Priscilla Spears December 2013 The following listing gives an introduction to the phylogenetic classification of the flowering plants that has emerged in recent decades, and which is based on nucleic acid sequences as well as morphological and developmental data. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. When several genera have the same common name, the names are separated by commas. The order of the family names is from the linear listing of families in the APG III report. For further information, see the references on the last page. Basal Angiosperms (ANITA grade) Amborellales Amborellaceae, sole family, the earliest branch of flowering plants, a shrub native to New Caledonia – Amborella Nymphaeales Hydatellaceae – aquatics from Australasia, previously classified as a grass Cabombaceae (water shield – Brasenia, fanwort – Cabomba) Nymphaeaceae (water lilies – Nymphaea; pond lilies – Nuphar) Austrobaileyales Schisandraceae (wild sarsaparilla, star vine – Schisandra; Japanese

E-mail: [email protected] 2 Institute of Plant Biology and Biotechnology, Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology of Plants, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität, Schlossplatz 4, 48149 Münster, Germany. Correspondence to: Joachim Röschenbleck Abstract Previous molecular phylogenetic studies of Pelargonium have remained inconclusive with respect to branching patterns of major infrageneric lineages, with the exception of a basalmost generic split that reflects chromosome length differences. Because of this and the lack of clearly distinguishing morphological characters, no subgeneric classification has been undertaken so far. Here, we present increased phylogenetic signal using chloroplast atpB-rbcL spacer and trnL- F sequences including additional taxa (110 taxa in total) and character sampling. All analyses confirmed the previously recognised first split into two clades characterised by chromosome size, and also converged on four major clades (two within each chromosome size group). The four major clades are further supported by synapomorphic length mutations from both intergenic spacers. The evolution of characters from flower morphology and phenolic constituents was examined for usefulness for clade delimitation. Although character state distributions did not generally reveal clear synapomorphies for the respective lineages, differences in state distributions of floral characters and leaf phenols support the circumscription of these major clades.

Submission Date: 15-09-2018; Revision Date: 19-11-2018; Accepted Date: 20-12-2018 Correspondence: ABSTRACT Dr. Gina Batoy Barbosa, Introduction: Department of Chemistry, Gingers, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, are popularly known for their Central Mindanao University, beneficial uses in medicine and culinary applications. Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate University Town, Musuan, the DPPH radical scavenging activity of the leaves and rhizomes of Zingiber officinale Rosc., Bukidnon, PHILIPPINES. Curcuma longa L., and Etlingera elatior (Jack) R.M. Smith. Methods: The plant samples were collected from Bukidnon, Mindanao, Philippines. Both water and ethanolic extracts were prepared Phone no: +63-917-426- 8951 separately from its leaves and rhizomes. The extracts were subjected to the determination of Email: ginavbatoy@yahoo. DPPH radical scavenging activity relative to ascorbic acid. Results and Discussion: Leaves, in com general, had higher radical scavenging activity in water than in ethanol extracts. On the other hand, rhizomes had generally higher radical scavenging activity in ethanol than in water extracts except for E. elatior. Among the leaf extracts, E. elatior possessed the highest radical scavenging activity. In both water and ethanol, E. elatior displayed higher radical scavenging activity in its leaves that its rhizomes. Conclusion: Findings of this study suggest the potential of E. elatior leaves as source of antioxidants. Key words: Gingers, Curcuma longa, Etlingera elatior, Zingiber officinale, DPPH.
