Pulling sledges and battling temperatures of -50°C and wind speeds of over 60mph, the team completed the 1704km distance in just over 61 days - the first team to do the crossing with no prior polar experience. A Regional Advisor for the British Army, Zanna has travelled extensively and it was a two-month mountaineering and scientific expedition to South Georgia and the Falkland Islands with the British Exploring Society, when she was 18, that inspired her to try for the team. She says “Having never been the fittest or the fastest in life, I firmly believe that doing something extraordinary is possible for everyone, and that we should never underestimate our abilities”.     Volume 4 (2009) ISSN 1751-7788 Folk for Art’s Sake: English Folk Music in the Mainstream Milieu Simon Keegan-Phipps University of Sheffield The English folk arts are currently undergoing a considerable resurgence; 1 practices of folk music, dance and drama that explicitly identify themselves as English are the subjects of increasing public interest throughout England. The past five years have seen a manifold increase in the number of professional musical acts that foreground their Englishness; for the first time since the last 'revival period' of the 1950s and 60s, it is easier for folk music agents to secure bookings for these English acts in England than Scottish and Irish (Celtic) bands. Folk festivals in England are experiencing greatly increased popularity, and the profile of the genre has also grown substantially beyond the boundaries of the conventional 'folk scene' contexts: Seth Lakeman received a Mercury Music Awards nomination in 2006 for his album Kitty Jay; Jim Moray supported Will Young’s 2003 UK tour, and his album Sweet England appeared in the Independent’s ‘Cult Classics’ series in 2007; in 2003, the morris side Dogrose Morris appeared on the popular television music show Later with Jools Holland, accompanied by the high-profile fiddler, Eliza Carthy;1 and all-star festival-headliners Bellowhead appeared on the same show in 2006.2 However, the expansion in the profile and presence of English folk music has 2 not been confined to the realms of vernacular, popular culture: On 20 July 2008, BBC Radio 3 hosted the BBC Proms

As I write this, it is cold but sunny afternoon and the frost is still there where the sun has not reached it. Snow is forecast much to the excitement of the children but not the grownups who have to try and get on with important things like getting to work and doing the shopping! Yes it is common sense but it is always worth checking what you have in your car – did you eat that chocolate that was there for emergencies? Whatever the weather, winter is here and that means the traditional Carol Concerts and Services in our Churches (page 15), Pantomime time (oh yes it is on page 7) and winter walks (page 11).     NETTLEBED FOLK CLUB Nettlebed Folk Club is now one of the best known folk venues in the UK and is highly regarded by the country's main folk hierarchy - BBC’s Mark Radcliffe introduced the Folk Awards live on air from the Royal Albert Hall by saying that the RAH was ‘..very much the Nettlebed Folk Club of the South Kensington area!’ and Phil Beer from Show of Hands said that we were "Probably the best Folk Club in the Country” - but he is our Patron! The Club has also won the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Club of the Year Award. The Club is a volunteer run, non profit organisation and it takes over 12 people to keep it running smoothly as average audience numbers are usually around 120. Concerts are held on Monday evenings from 8pm at The Village Club, High Street, Nettlebed, nr Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire, RG9 5DD. It presents an intelligent, atmospheric sequence of songs, mostly origi- nal compositions but with thematically rele- vant side excursions into traditional song. Although the duo’s trademark is Laura’s strong voice, often in tandem with her haunt- ing flute playing, those elements by no means upstage Adam’s complementary gui- tars, banjo and percussion. Credit is also due to album producer Tom Pryor, who plays vio- lin, piano and guitar and is responsible for coordinating some subtly layered string arrangements. There’s a deliberate unity in the songs chosen for this album, in that they explore different aspects of lives at the margins of society that are frayed at the edges and in the process of “unravelling” due to personal crises. These include figures from real life (poets Rosemary Tonks and Zelda Fitzgerald) and a Kurdish refugee (Kana), as well as sce- narios and types familiar from folk song cul- ture (Two Girls). Traditional songs Bushes And Briars and Who Put The Blood focus on women who dare not speak up for them- selves, contrasting with the narrator of Frankie Armstrong’s anthem of empower- ment Doors To My Mind voiced by Laura in a Hickory Signals restrained yet powerful account and given an edgy pulse by Adam’s percussion.

Concept, partners and planning The idea of holding a festival celebrating Dartmoor music through time, to mark the 20th Anniversary of the Dartmoor Society, was conceived by Tom Greeves, Chairman of the Dartmoor Society, to complement the Festival of Dartmoor Literature that was held to mark the Society’s 10th Anniversary in 2008. He wrote to Simon Ible, Director of Music at Peninsula Arts, Plymouth University, in May 2014, outlining his initial thoughts. Simon’s enthusiastic response and a coffee with him in Plymouth, led to a meeting in February 2015 with him and identified partners including Seventh Wave Music and Wren Music. A second meeting in September 2015 included Lucy Luxmoore, oboeist, singer, teacher and co-founder of the Devonport Park Community Choir. Further meetings with partners were held in January, March, July, September and November 2016. These clarified that it would be a midsummer festival (we were aware that Glastonbury would have a ‘fallow’ year in 2018), and its title 3 ‘Dartmoor Resonance’, suggested by Carolyn Hillyer, was confirmed. Marilyn Tucker of Wren Music offered to be the lead on grant applications. A 10-day festival 15-24 June was revised to a 9-day series of events 16-24 June.

    Welcome to... OUR ANNUAL 3 DAY SUMMER FESTIVAL Ten years on from our first RockFest, we are incredibly proud of how far the festival has come. At this year’s event we will see some exciting new bands but also some recognised local talent. Gemini will headline on the Friday night, bringing their dynamism and energy to the festival. Saturday sees Swedish band Baskery, who have spent some time in the US charts, grace the RockFest stage, while on Sunday the smooth vibes of Winter Mountain will soothe us through the final day of the weekend. There will be plenty of things happening at RockFest for all the family, with outside bars, face painting and a BBQ, as well as our main menu. We are extremely grateful to have the support of our local suppliers this year.
