Woods 2013 Abstract The purpose of this constructivist grounded theory study was to explore how lesbian, gay, bisexual, and questioning (LGBQ) college students of color and faith perceive and make meaning of their multiple and intersecting social identities. A primary aim of the study, consistent with its methodology, was to capture and describe this process in the words and experiences of the participants themselves. Three research questions guided the study: a. How do LGBQ college students of color and faith perceive and make meaning of their multiple social identities? b. What identities, if any, seem to become more or less salient for these students in the meaning-making process? c. What role, if any, does meaning making play in the development of their sense of belonging on campus? Semi-structured interviews with eight LGBQ college students of color and faith at a large, predominantly White institution in the Midwest revealed that, as participants made meaning of the relationship between their sexual orientation, faith, and race/ethnicity, all of the participants described a contention between their sexual orientation and faith identities that challenged them to (re)frame faith in a way that would allow them to integrate their faith and sexual orientation. Faith was framed for the participants by external factors, such as churches, parents, and schools. In making ii meaning of the contention that these external factors set up for the navigation of their multiple identities, LGBQ students of color and faith must (re)frame faith in a way that matches their beliefs, opinions, and commitments around their sexual orientation and faith identities. This emerging theory provides an often-untold narrative that LGBTQ people of color can also identify with their faith identities. Furthermore, the way that these participants made meaning of their various experiences and (re)framed faith resists the common discourse around faith and sexual orientation. iii Acknowledgements I distinctly remember my faculty meeting with Dr. Terrell Strayhorn during my interview weekend two years ago. In that half hour I felt an immediate connection as I had a chance to discuss my research interests around the experiences of LGBTQ people of color and faith, discuss transnational queerness, and admire his amazingly extensive shoe collection.     The magic that can set you free': the ideology of folk and the myth of the rock community by SIMON FRITH Rock, the saying goes, is 'the folk music of our time'. Not from a sociological point of view. If 'folk' describes pre-capitalist modes of music production, rock is, without a doubt, a mass-produced, mass- consumed, commodity. The rock-folk argument, indeed, is not about how music is made, but about how it works: rock is taken to express (or reflect) a way of life; rock is used by its listeners as a folk music - it articulates communal values, comments on shared social problems. The argument, in other words, is about subcultures rather than music- making; the question of how music comes to represent its listeners is begged. (I develop these arguments further in Frith 1978, pp. 191-202, and, with particular reference to punk rock, in Frith 1980.) In this article I am not going to answer this question either. My concern is not whether rock is or is not a folk music, but is with the effects of a particular account of popular culture - the ideology of folk - on rock's interpretation of itself. For the rock ideologues of the 1960s - musicians, critics and fans alike - rock 'n' roll's status as a folk music was what differentiated it from routine pop; it was as a folk music that rock could claim a distinctive political and artistic edge. The argument was made, for example, by Jon Landau in his influential role as reviews editor and house theorist of Rolling Stone.

    GALA Choruses Annual Report 2019 Letter from the Board President 1969 was a pivotal time for queer folk as a bunch of drag queens and others finally had enough, fought back against a bigoted and corrupt police force, and galvanized LGBTQA people. A new louder, impatient generation of activists began to rise up. Recently, 21 GALA choruses celebrated Stonewall with the commission Quiet No More. I was fortunate to hear several sing this amazing work and be reminded of our fight in 1969… a battle to be merely tolerated. Over the past several years, members have asked if GLBTQA choruses are even necessary. After all, we’ve won marriage equality in the United States; we are portrayed positively on TV; many states have job protections; we aren’t just tolerated, we are celebrated! So haven’t we arrived? I say no. Fifty years after the Stonewall Riots, and despite (or perhaps as a result of) our progress, there is ON OUR COVER — a backlash. Hate crimes against all minorities are up. There have been over 20 murders of Trans The Twin Cities member people in America in the past 10 months. On their website, the Straight Pride Coalition claims the choruses join in with “inherent superiority” of whiteness, Christianity, Western civilization, and heterosexuality.     Dear Friends, You’ve probably heard Minnesota jokingly referred to as the “land of 10,000 choirs.” In such a crowded market you might ask what the significance is of one more choir? But time and again, One Voice Mixed Chorus continues to prove itself as an indispensable as- set to our community through its relevance, uniqueness and excellence. I came to One Voice a year ago because I was amazed at their combination of mission focus and artistic quality. I have yet to be disappointed. Our mission is to build community and create social change by raising our voices in song. We create a safe space for LGBTQ people to be their authentic selves, encourage the public to do the same, and create world-class music in the process. The intersection between art and social change is such a valuable, yet overlooked part of our collective ex- perience. You know the power that music has to bring us together. Through song, we be- come the change we want to see in the world and radiate a powerful force for good. Bear with me for a short biology lesson: There’s a chemical your body releases, called oxytocin, that literally builds trust and creates bonding with other people. It’s normally released through touch, like hugging, handshakes, or close dancing. But it’s also released through singing. The music that One Voice makes LITERALLY builds a more connected world where we show solidarity with one another. Together, we can bring this mission and this music to more people in more meaning- ful way.

Duplass ABSTRACT: Commitment to open-mindedness, critical thinking, liberty, and social justice are proposed as four pillars of a democratic ideology. The highly charged and polarized discourse between left and right po- litical ideology among the media, politicians, educators, and public has intensified the challenge placed on social studies educators to transmit these goals to their students. A rendition of the philosophical trajectory of the ideas of liberty, social justice, and justice are provided and married with concepts from the philosophical foundations of American education, social studies education goals and strategies, and contemporary human- istic philosophy so as to articulate a new case that transmission of a democratic ideology is at the core of social studies education. The proposition is made that teaching social studies is unique because the development of an ideology requires teachers’ attention to values, virtues formation, and the liberation of the individual.
