Hits 'N' Misses: Unstoppable Baahubali Rules QUARTERLY UPDATE - MEDIA Hits ‘n’ Misses: Unstoppable Baahubali rules India Equity Research | Media Baahubali 2: The Conclusion gave a big bang start to Q1FY18 with the blockbuster reporting overall domestic box office collection of INR10bn plus. However, the much hyped (expected to collect INR2bn plus) Salman Khan flick, Tubelight came croppers and ended with ~INR1bn box office collections. Movies like Sachin A Billion Dream and Hindi Medium performed moderately. Among Hollywood movies, The Fate Of The Furious 8 did well in Q1FY18. Base had movies like Housefull 3 (reported INR1bn plus collection) and The Jungle Book (reported INR1.8bn plus collection). We reiterate that huge scale and screen additions place PVR and Inox Leisure in a sweet spot to capture higher share of box office pie. \ Strong releases impelled ad growth Footfall at the multiplexes was mainly driven by Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. However, it fell short of expectations due to lacklustre performance by Tubelight ‐ base had movies like Housefull 3 and The Jungle Book. Among the Hollywood movies, The Fate Of The Furious 8 did moderately well in Q1FY18, while Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.2, Pirates Of The Caribbean‐5 and Wonder Woman failed to make a mark. We estimate 18% YoY ad growth for PVR, aided by good expected performance of Tubelight, Baahubali 2 and Sachin A Billion Dream. PVR: Ticket prices to surge We estimate PVR’s ATP grew 10% YoY in Q1FY18. We expect the multiplex industry to continue to report decent growth in Q1FY18 on higher share of net box office collections led by: i) addition of screens in past 12 months (PVR opened 8 screens in Q1FY18); and ii) pick up in Hollywood films. Other key developments were: (a) 28% GST rate (above INR100 ATP) is neutral for industry. However, some benefits due to input credit set off will lead to EBITDA margin expansion; (b) PVR plans to open 5 IMAX screens; (c) ticket cap in Telangana was increased to INR200 and INR300 for regular and gold class, respectively, due to higher GST rate; (d) Local body tax of 30% above the GST rate of 28% led to a strike in Tamil Nadu; and (e) one MRP (no differential pricing) for products at airports, malls and cinemas. Outlook: Q2FY18 line up moderate along with strong base In 2FY18, stars spangled movies like Toilet: EK Prem Katha (Akshay Kumar), Jagga Abneesh Roy Jasoos (Ranbir Kapoor), Munna Michael (Tiger Shroff) and Jab Harry Met Sejal (Shah +91 22 6620 3141 Rukh Khan) are anticipated to do well. Further, a strong line up of English movies [email protected] (Spider‐Man: Homecoming, Dunkirk and War for the Planet of the Apes) may also aid Rajiv Berlia box office collection in Q2FY18. Pertinently, the base is strong with Q2FY17 seeing +91 22 6623 3377 [email protected] releases like Pink, Mohenjo Daro, Rustom, Dishoom and Sultan. • Zakir Naik: What Did I Do to Earn the Tags of ‘Dr Terror’, ‘Hate Monger’? Islamic Scholar Dr
www.Asia Times.US NRI Global Edition Email: [email protected] September 2016 Vol 7, Issue 9 Zakir Naik: What did I do to earn the tags of ‘Dr Terror’, ‘Hate Monger’? Islamic scholar Dr. Zakir Naik wrote an open letter to Indians called ‘Five Questions and an Appeal’ where he lamented about being targeted and labeled a ‘terror preacher’ in India. In the letter, Naik said, “Of 150 countries where I’m respected and my talks are welcomed, I’m being called a terrorist influencer in my own country. What an irony. Why now, when I’ve been doing the same thing for over 25 years?”. Naik, 51, is an Islamic preacher, who founded the Islamic Research Foundation in 1991 when he started Dawah or religious preaching. His lectures mostly revolve around how Islam is superior to all other faiths. While he claims to be an advocate of interfaith dialogue, his preaching’s’ reinforce all the stereotypes which exist against Muslims. Following reports that one of the militants of Dhaka terror attack was inspired by Naik’s misinterpretations of Islam, there are growing demand for strict action against him. In the letter, Naik asks why he has become the enemy number one for the State and Central government. “It has been over two months since the ghastly terror attack in Dhaka, and over one month since I’ve been asking myself what exactly have I done to become the enemy number one of the media as well as the State and Central Gov- ernment,” wrote Naik. × and justice. He also questioned the repeated investigations on him by government agencies.

  • Institutional Equities Event Update
Institutional Equities Film Exhibition Sector 2 May 2017 ‘Baahubali 2’ Augurs Well For FY18 Girish Pai ‘Baahubali 2’, which was released on 28 April 2017, has beaten all historical records in the Indian Head of Research film industry by clocking gross box office collection (GBOC, revenue prior to entertainment tax [email protected] being deducted) globally of Rs5.2bn over three days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) based on media +91-22-3926 8017 reports. This includes domestic GBOC of ~Rs4bn and ~Rs1.2bn in overseas markets (of which 60% came from North America). This marks a tremendous start to FY18 for the two film exhibition players, PVR and Inox Leisure, which will benefit from the very high occupancy rate, higher ATP and also higher bargaining power vis-à-vis advertisers. Unlike FY17, which was impacted by insipid content (except for a late flourish from ‘Dangal’), we believe FY18 could be a great year with the start provided by ‘Baahubali 2’ and a slate of blockbusters that are likely to be released in the rest of FY18 (Exhibit 2 provides the slate of movies in FY18). We are positive on the film exhibition sector (see sector report Indian Film Exhibition Sector- Oligopolistic Business In Its Infancy; GST To Lift Margins And RoIC). We believe that: (1) Indian multiplex industry is an oligopoly (top four players control ~70% of screens) and will remain so as entry barriers are quite formidable and there are no substitutes. This industry structure will deliver steady revenue growth, and improve margins as well as RoIC over a long period of time.
