Sienna Walenciak // People Editor Senior prom is one of the most excit- ing events that high schoolers look PP forward to during their academic years. Although last year’s graduating class was not able to hold their prom due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s seniors were able to attend prom, albeit with a few modifications to make it more COVID-friendly. To learn more about the event, I asked senior Lanie Stem to share her expe- rience. Historically, the prom has been held inside the SteelStacks ArtsQuest building in Beth- RR lehem. As COVID isn’t quite yet in our rearview mirror, the decision was made to host the event outdoors. A tent was set up at the SteelStacks to accommodate the students. “I was so happy it was outside,” said Stem. “Even though it was hot, it was nice to have a large space to walk around and get fresh air.” A limited number of tickets were sold to control the number of people attending, and students from other schools or those who previously graduated from Easton were not able to attend. As has been standard for most public spaces over the past 15 months, masks were required and could not be taken off at any point during the evening except to eat. Food was a nice mix of small, savory hot and cold hor d'oeuvres rather than a sit down meal and students could eat whenever they chose. This was in keeping with previous years. Social distancing of six feet was also enforced the entire time in com- OO pliance with CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) guidelines. “The only time people weren’t wearing masks was when they were dancing because it was so hot,” Stem said. “Mr. Geiger made an announcement halfway through to re- mind us to keep our masks on.” Although there were many changes to this year’s senior prom, the end result was more than satisfactory for seniors. “Having a smaller, different prom let us keep one of the more important high school traditions, and we were even allowed to dance together, too, but other schools couldn’t.” said Stem. And she’s right considering this year’s se- niors have had to roll with so many disappointments like not being able to attend foot- ball games, the bonfire, or regular graduation -- all of which have become senior sta- MM ples for every Easton graduating class. When asked how she’ll remember this year’s prom, Stem didn’t think twice before an- swering. “It was a great evening. I had fun, all of my friends seemed to have fun, and it was a really enjoyable time overall. For a few hours, it didn’t even feel like there was a global pandemic.” 3 Points Of View The Junto Senior Issue 2021 GraduationGraduation AroundAround TheThe GlobeGlobe Steven McDonald // Copy Editor Graduation is a great event internationally, despite the differences in timing and ceremony that many countries may have. Students in Japan or the Philippines for instance would graduate high school in springtime for instance, and the last semester of high school in Austria is all about writing a personalized paper and exams, while there are very few classes, before school lets out slightly ear- ly for the Seniors. Ceremonies as well vary as students in Sweden wear caps reminiscent of what a sailor would wear called a studentmössa instead of our caps, and in the Japanese Kanazawa col- lege of art students wear such crazy costumes to their graduation that it has begun to be broad- casted. Even after standing in ceremonies in Argentina or Italy family members throw food at the graduating students for fun. The United States are rather unique in the regard that we have multi- ple events prepared for seniors, most prominently the prom, and our own graduation ceremonies which can vary as well depending on the school or region. Seniors should value these events, whether private or public as this is a community coming together to praise our work put into our studies and work, building up to this point. Wow. This is really it. My final Junto article. I cannot put into words the feelings I have while writing my last Junto article. For weeks I have pro- crastinated this article with the hope that it will never end, but unfortunately, it has to. Junto was not just another class for me, but it was the start of my future. Because of Junto, I was able to dis- cover my love for graphic design and create a career path that I know I will forever love. Each time I think about where I started from the first Junto class, I tear up. Before Junto, I was a student who was not very involved and did not have many friends. For instance, if you told me at the beginning of high school I would become the Junto’s editor in chief, I would have definitely called you crazy. Yet, here I am. Junto has helped me find my confidence and accomplish goals freshman year Lani would have never even considered. I cannot go without giving credit to the people in the class, who I now consider family. Last year, Ally Fuller, former editor in chief, worked closely with me and prepared me to become editor in chief this year. Without her guidance, I would have never been able to make an impact on The Jun- to like I did. The Junto staff- The Junto would be NOTHING without all your hard work and dedication. This past year has not been easy working through Zoom calls, but I am so incredibly proud of each and every one of you. Thank you so much for teaching me how to become a leader and I will miss our random conversations during class. Lastly, Ms. Capecci- Let me just say I would be really lost right now if it was not for you. I cannot thank you enough for selecting me to become a staff member, as well as putting your trust into me to become editor in chief. As an underclassman I used to think I had experienced it. That end of year rut that hit right when all the big last projects were due. As an underclassman it was not so bad, at least for me it wasn’t. Now I know that was not senioritis at all, THIS is senioritis. I have spent the last week catching up on the work I forgot about or ignored for the last month because I had no motivation. What’s worse is that I didn’t fear the conse- quences—until the Thursday of last week when it hit me that time was actually run- ning out. So I’ve been trying—especially on my Humanities paper in which I put my blood, sweat, and tears—and working so hard that I have managed to stress myself out even harder. It is not that I feel secure in my acceptance to a college—I know that if I do horrible my last quarter things may not bode well for me. It’s that I am so eager to move on and move away that I can no longer bring myself to focus on the work I have left here. I did not write this article to complain, my teachers have been more than accommodat- ing and supportive all year. I’m definitely not the only student feeling it—teachers are feeling it too—and it is nothing new, but it HIT. I’m willing to generalize and speak for us all when I say we have done the best we could all year and all we want to do now is enjoy the time we have left here. So much was taken from us this year, we deserve this break as a final hurrah. And thank you to the teachers who have stayed true to the promise to be as flexible and supportive as they can all year. You are the ones that made life tolerable in an otherwise not so great year.
