Nata Gomez Seven year old Natalia, started riding in March of this year. “Nata” has a diagnosis of Aicardi syndrome, which means there is an absence of the corpus callosum, (the part of the brain between the right and left sides that allows the right side to communicate with the left.) She is partially paralyzed on her left side, and her vision is limited. Aicardi Syndrome only affects females, and the Children’s normal life expectancy ranges from 2-10 years old, with the oldest living until the age of 20. Nata made it perfectly clear to all of us that she absolutely did not enjoy her first few sessions on the horse...she expressed herself Demonstration LOUD & CLEAR!! As her parents explain, “Natalia has always been a strong-willed child. Even with her many challenges, she When you visit Carousel Ranch, you will see that no demands total control of her surroundings. When she first came two therapy sessions are alike. Junior Hernandez Junior Hernandez is eight years old, he has the diagnoses of Autism and Developmental Delay. Junior has been riding at the ranch a little over three years now and his fun-loving and contagious personality make it such a joy to work in his sessions each week. Just recently, we have seen an increase in his speech production, which has allowed him to express his wants and needs, as well as his likes and dislikes. Junior has a high sensitivity to sound and can be easily startled by loud and abrupt noises. We’ve seen that with his speech developing he is able to communicate his fears better rather than just showing that he’s upset. In the words of Junior’s mom, “Before riding at Carousel Ranch, Junior was afraid of the horse noises and of the animal themselves, but he has gradually become accustomed to the noises, even mimicking them, and now asks for them by name. He had a difficult time walking and would usually stumble and fall, but after he began riding we could see that he was gaining more muscle control & strength, which enabled him to walk better. Junior anticipates visiting Carousel Ranch every week and is constantly asking for the lights in the arena and so he was scheduled to evening therapy so that he could see the lights turn on. Junior loves the animals, and the people at Carousel Ranch - they make him feel at home. As his parents, we feel that Carousel Ranch is the reason that Junior loves horses (and the donkey), and is walking better.” During Junior’s weekly lessons we work on building strength throughout his entire body as he has low tone in his muscles. Katy Tennesen We also work on his listening and social skills, as well as sensory 14 year old Katy Tennesen has been riding at Carousel Ranch for integration. Something new at the ranch that Junior has discovered the last year and a half, but has been involved in therapeutic is our donkey “Earl.” At first the loud noises that would come out riding since she was 3 years old. Katy was diagnosed with of Earl were terrifying to Junior, but he now has learned to love Congenital Myotonic Dystrophy, a condition usually identified at him and asks and talks about him throughout his entire lesson. birth or soon after. Myotonic means ‘involving muscle stiffness’; Junior is one of the happiest little boy’s we’ve ever met, in fact and dystrophy is ‘muscle wasting and weakness’… In the words we’ve yet to see a day that he is sad or upset. You will always of her mom, “Carousel Ranch provides Katy with a positive, see Junior with a smile on his face! enriching activity that she loves. The benefit for her condition has been amazing and being around such wonderful instructors makes her love for horses grow even stronger.” Katy is a terrific young lady, but the trouble is she doesn’t seem to realize just how terrific she is. She may have turned 14 in May but she is far from your typical teenager. Katy is always eager to listen and learn. Because she was already an accomplished rider when she became a student at Carousel Ranch, we decided to change it up a bit for her, and so each week we challenge her to do something different. One week it will be a vaulting lesson on our big draft horse Dawn with Katy sitting in her favorite position - riding backwards. You can only imagine how wide this horse’s back is, and so sitting backwards allows for Katy’s legs and hips to stretch out, while also engaging her core muscles. The next week Katy may be going for a trail ride or grooming the miniature horses, Max and Chocolate. She will then hand lead them through a trail course in the arena – but truth be told we think our “mini’s” get more hugs and kisses from Katy than grooming. When riding in a saddle, she prefers to ride Annabelle, and the funny coincidence is that Annabelle is a Norwegian Fjord, and Katy is part Norwegian on her father’s side. That is probably why they get along so well. In addition to coming to the ranch Katy enjoys swimming, playing games such as tennis and bowling on her Wii, and in school her favorite subject is science. Katy is a delight to work with and we know she will go far in this world.

Olive Haase Olive is four years old and is diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia. In the words of her mom, “As a mom to a child with Apraxia, a neurological disorder that affects my child’s mouth/tongue/throat motor function and makes it incredibly hard for her to speak, I celebrate every new word that leaves her lips. At the age of 3.5, Olive only “had” 15 words. Most of her communication was expressed via pointing and grunting. Because her ability to think isn’t impaired, my smart little daughter went through years on Earth understanding every sentence uttered to her, nearly unable to reply.” As you can imagine, this has led to self-esteem issues and a lot of frustration in that others don’t understand her and often they think that Olive doesn’t understand what is being said to her. Riding the horse allows her to forget about her difficulty producing words, instead she just talks and knows that she is accepted just the way that she is. Olive is a typical little girl who loves princesses, the colors pink and purple, playing outside and her puppy dog Happy. Olive began riding at the ranch almost a year ago and we have seen tremendous changes in her speech as well as her self-confidence. When Olive rides her horse she’s able to just be a little girl who loves her horse and who loves spending time with the other girls that are in her lesson. Olive’s mom, Therese was a board member and long time supporter of the ranch. She states, “As a supporter of Carousel Ranch, I immediately researched equestrian therapy’s success Desmond Gabriel with Apraxic children. What I found gave me hope. Parents Desmond just celebrated his 5th birthday yesterday!! He and his spoke of calmer, happier kids; a rush of new words; reduction in twin, were born prematurely at 26 weeks, weighing only 1 lb 13 presentation of often co-existing issues; and so much more. oz. Desmond is diagnosed with a mild form of Cerebral In her mainstreamed preschool class, Olive refused to even try Palsy, and a sensory processing disorder. to talk. The director hypothesized that she had undiagnosed When Desmond began riding at the ranch almost a year ago, cognition issues (She doesn’t.). That changed when she uttered her within fifteen minutes into his lesson, he would be exhausted and first sentence three weeks in: ‘I ri’ horse’ Thank you for helping ready to get off his horse. As the weeks went by his endurance Olive find her voice.” began to grow as well as his strength and confidence. One of the greatest benefits of using the horse as therapy for Desmond, is that he adores animals. So to him, this is just time being spent with his horse. He has a very large imagination and loves super heroes, space ships and we often pretend were on a safari looking for animals in the wild with our binoculars. In the words of his mom, “It wasn’t until he started riding at Carousel Ranch that we started to see huge improvements. After just a few sessions, his physical therapist noticed huge gains in his core strength. Prior to the sessions, when he ran, he ran sideways, compensating for his weaker left side. After riding Carousel Ranch, he began to straighten out. At school, he no longer requires his orthopedic chair, and now sits with his schoolmates in a regular chair. He is gaining strength in his hands and working toward self help skills, such as snapping snaps, dressing himself, and feeding himself.” Prior to riding at the ranch we learned that Desmond had no interest and some fear of some of the activity’s that his brothers were interested in such as riding a scooter, swinging on the swing or even playing with a small dump truck. After riding at the ranch for only two weeks he went outside and got on his scooter all by himself and the following week he asked his daddy to push him on the swing. To you and I, these may be small milestones but to Desmond and his parents, these are things that can change and improve the quality and joy of his life. 16 www.CarouselRanch.org

That is why we are coming to you tonight to help us make this dream a reality for our kids. “As a community of friends, colleagues and leaders in many circles, we have the opportunity to come together to create a state-of-the-art equestrian therapy facility that we will all be proud of, and that will serve our community well,” said Wayne Crawford, capital campaign committee chair. Now it’s time for the entire community – businesses and individuals – to rally in support of a capital campaign to raise the final dollars necessary. It’s not much different from the concept of barn raising, where communities banded together for the purpose of constructing family barns in American rural life. Horse sponsorship program makes a HUGE difference At Carousel Ranch we couldn’t do what we do without each and every one of our horses. Each one is special in their own way and are hand chosen for each of our students. They all come in many different sizes and shapes and with their movement we are able to provide the type of therapy that we do. Again this year...friends and supporters participated in our “adopt” a therapy horse program - sponsoring them for a one year period. A Sponsorship is $3,500 a year...covering board, shoeing and basic veterinary expenses. We thank the following donors for their continued support. Horses can be sponsored for a full year, half year or even 3 months. Visit the “General Store” tonight for more information.

We are excited about his new found talent, which opens a whole new realm of “Callie” possibility for some of our students. Sponsored by The Sandnes Family Callie is a big, beautiful Belgian Mare, originally brought in to take some of the workload off of our original BIG horse, “Rotary”. She came in ready to work, and has became a quick favorite. She has been with us for well over 5 years now. She is sure and steady, working with those students who are more adult sized or need an instructor sitting on the horse “Banner” behind them. Banner is and always will be, a favorite of so many of our children. He is small, but mighty - and always does his job to perfection. AVAILABLE FOR SPONSORSHIP TONIGHT! “Gus” Though young at heart, Gus is becoming a quick favorite at the ranch. He is our 2nd Haflinger –the strong, silent type, that is especially suited for this work. Over the past year, Gus has become a very important member of the CR team – working in many of our most challenging lessons.

“Mo” Mo is a Haflinger, a very special horse, purchased through a grant from the City of Santa Clarita. This breed of horse is espe- cially suited for our work and is known for its gentle disposition, sturdy draft type body and short legs. Mo is certainly all of that and more – and is not only beautiful, but loved by everyone.

“Cricket” Cricket, an eight year old American Quarter Horse is the latest addition to our herd...we just couldn't pass him up. He is one of those rare horses that quietly walks in, and was ready to go to work. Cricket is very sure of himself, patiently waiting for the riders "cues" in asking him to walk, trot or canter, to turn one way or another, and of course to WHOA.!!

“Earl” Welcome Earl! Our very first donkey at Carousel Ranch. Donkeys are easy keepers as well as being quite intel- ligent, cautious, friendly, playful, and eager to learn. Since donkeys have a stronger sense of self preserva- tion they have a reputation for being very good "watch- dogs," and that is Earl's job at the ranch, he stands guard over our mini's Max & Chocolate at night, keeping the predators away from them.

“Mijo” Unlike some of our horses, Mijo had a lov- ing home and previous career as a “movie” horse. While Mijo immediately proved that he had the right temperament for the job, it took some time and dedication to find the right combination of shoes & angles to get him moving without being sore. You can tell that he likes the attention from his riders and feels at home at the ranch. He truly seems to enjoy his second career as a therapy horse to children and doesn’t appear to miss the excitement of being a “movie star”. Our Child Sponsorship program assists riders in need, assuring that every child is able to ride… regardless of ability to pay. Many friends and supporters have participated in our “adopt” a child program. Sponsorship” is $1,500 a year. This has made a big difference to our children and their families and we can never thank you enough. Over the past year, the following children received scholarships through sponsorship from last year’ Heart of the West event.
