Throughout the year, Denver celebrates cultural diversity with events that boast a distinctive Rocky Mountain flair. Enjoy the colorful spectacle of the nation’s largest Cinco de Mayo celebration, attracting more than 250,000 people to Civic Center Park and transforming Santa Fe Drive into a festive stage for live entertainment, art and incredible Mexican food.

In March, the Denver Powwow offers the opportunity to witness the pageantry and history of Native-American culture. This event attracts 700 dancers of all ages from 70 tribes, and is one of the nation’s largest annual gatherings in which modern ways and old traditions come together. Craftspeople share their work at the popular Powwow art fair and live

A CITY OF MANY COLORS AND CULTURES A CITY OF MANY COLORS performances take place throughout the weekend. The Denver Art Museum, the first institution to showcase Native-American art as art – not as anthropology – is a must, any time of year. The Museo de las Américas showcases modern and traditional art from throughout the Americas. Art galleries like the Native American Trading Post and Artists on Santa Fe tempt visitors to take a little piece of culture home.

Visitors interested in African- American culture will find many opportunities to explore it in Denver. The annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Marade (march and parade combined), brings locals and visitors together to remember and honor a great national hero. Every spring and summer the historic Five Points neighborhood hosts the Five Points Jazz Festival and the Black Arts Festival. In June, the annual Juneteenth festival is a party of music, food and dance in celebration of the day Texas slaves realized their free- dom, with more than 100,000 people attending.

Whatever your cultural interests, the Mile High City is certain to have something for you. Denver celebrates the Chinese New Year with ribbon dancers, tai chi swordsmen and lion dancers.

The Denver St. Patrick’s Day Parade stretches for miles and blends traditional Irish scenes with Western stagecoaches, horseback riders and cowboys. In June, the Cherry Blossom Festival transforms Sakura Square for a weekend of Japanese Taiko drums, dancing and sushi.

The Dragon Boat Festival cele- brates the ancient and colorful sport of dragon-boat racing with diverse Asian food, entertainment, crafts and vibrantly decorated boats at Sloan’s Lake.

Come autumn, the Longs Peak Scottish-Irish Highland Festival brings pipe bands and kilts from Colorado and around the world to the Rocky Mountains. In Denver, drink in the fun of Oktoberfest at the annual block party in the Ballpark Neighborhood, complete with German dancing, music, brats, beer and fun for all ages.

ENVER has long been a gathering place Dfor people of all cultures. First were the high plains Native Americans who followed the buffalo herds and lived throughout the Front Range. When prospectors discovered gold in 1858, thousands of men crossed the Great Plains and settled in and around Denver. More than a third of the cowboys riding the cattle drives of this era were African Americans, many of them freed slaves who migrated West after the Civil War.

Asian immigrants helped build the railroads and many of them settled in Denver. Hispanic Americans have a long history in the region and their influence can be felt everywhere. Today, Denver is a city of many colors and cultures, a rich tapestry of diverse and fascinating people. MILE HIGH HISTORY ENVER boasts a collection of distinctive neighborhoods where the curious traveler can find hidden Dgems, like locals’ favorite eateries, shops, booksellers and galleries.

Five Points is the center of the African- American community and the location of the Black American West Museum, the Blair- Caldwell Library and the Crossroads Theater. The Art District on Santa Fe, including the Museo de las Américas, RiNo (River North Art District), and Tennyson Street Cultural District are home to dozens of galleries, shops, and restaurants.
