WHEREAS, It has come to the attention of the Members of the Legislature that Dr. 11. Coke Wood has made significant contributions to the preservation and restoration of historical data and objects of the State of California and, particularly, the Mother Lode; and WHEREAS, Although he was born in Oklahoma, he received his elementary and secondary education in the schools in Bishop, did undergraduate work at the University of Nevada and the University of , received a B.S. degree and a M.A. degree from the College of the Pacific, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with his Ph.D. degree from the University of Southern California; and WHEREAS, He taught for the Stockton Unified School District in Murphys for eight years, and has more recently been teaching at Delta College and the University of the Pacific; and WHEREAS, In 1952, he organized the Calaveras County Historical Society and has been vice president continuously since that date, and he has edited the society's quarterly publication for the past 12 years; and WHEREAS, From his sojourn in Murphys as a teacher, he became keenly interested in the history of the Mother Lode, and he and his wife, Ethelyn, purchased and restored the oldest building in Murphys—the P. L. Traver Building—and have transformed it into one of the finest privately owned museums in the Mother Lode; and WHEREAS, He has written many books and articles with respect to the Mother Lode, including, among others, Murphys, Queen of the Sierra; Calaveras, Land of Skulls; and The Big Trees, Carson Valley Turnpike, Ebbetts Pass and Highway Four; and WHEREAS, He pioneered in the field of television instruction, conducting history classes from the University of the Pacific, and for many years, he and his wife have conducted the popular California Mission Tours for the university; and WHEREAS, In 1965, Governor Brown appointed him as chairman of the California Historical Landmarks Advisory Commission and Governor Reagan recently reappointed him to the com- mission; and WHEREAS, He is editor and executive secretary for the California Historian, director for the Pacific Historian, Grand Clamp Historian of the E Clampus Vitus Clamper Magazine, a charter California intrigues all America, but no one exceeds the member of the Jedediah Strong Smith Society ( which he helped found) at the University of the Pacific, and a member of E Clampus Vitus ( Matuca Chapter); and Californian in his eagerness to know more about this rela- WHEREAS, In 1966, he was the recipient of an honor award from the California Historical tively new state of great physical contrasts.
