Cork City is a City Rising. Retail units are opening for business in the €50m Capitol retail and office complex. Work has started on the €90 million Navigation House office development on Albert Quay and over the summer, Cork City Council agreed the sale of 7-9 Parnell Place and 1-2 Deane Street to Tetrarch Capital who propose to build a budget boutique hotel and designer hostel with ground floor restaurants and bars. Earlier this year, Boole House was handed over to UCC and also over the summer, the Presentation Sisters opened Nano Nagle Place on Douglas Street. This is all progress. Our strategy at Cork City Council has been to deliver for the Cork region through a revitalised, vibrant city centre – to our mind, the city centre is the ‘healthy heart’ of Cork. -

OCTOBER 2007 dance ireland NEWS Dance Ireland, the trading name of the Association of Professional Dancers in Ireland Ltd., was established in 1989 as a membership-led organisation dedicated to the promotion of professional dance practice in Ireland. Since that time it has evolved into a national, strategic resource organisation whose core aims include the promotion of dance as a vibrant artform, the provision of support and practical resources for professional dance artists and advocacy on dance and choreography issues. Dance Ireland also manages DanceHouse, a purpose-built, state-of-the-art dance rehearsal venue, located in the heart of Dublin’s north-east inner city. DanceHouse is at the heart of Dance Ireland activities, as well as being a home for professional dance artists and the wider dance community. Title: ‘Don’t tell me I’m still on that feckin’ island’: Migration, Masculinity, British Television and Irish Popular Culture in the Work of Graham Linehan Author: Marcus Free, Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick – [email protected] Abstract The article examines how, through such means as interviews and DVD commentaries, television situation comedy writer Graham Linehan has discursively elaborated a distinctly migrant masculine identity as an Irish writer in London. It highlights his stress on how the working environment of British broadcasting and the tutelage of senior British broadcasters facilitated the satirical vision of Ireland in Father Ted. It focuses on the gendering of his narrative of becoming in London and how his suggestion of interplays between specific autobiographical details and his dramatic work have fuelled his public profile as a migrant Irish writer. Graham Linehan has written and co-written several situation comedies for British television, including Father Ted (with Arthur Mathews – Channel 4, 1995-98); Black Books (with Dylan Moran – Channel 4, 2000-2004 (first series only)); The IT Crowd (Channel 4, 2006- 13); and Count Arthur Strong (with Steve Delaney – BBC, 2013-15). Unusually, for a television writer, he has also developed a significant public profile in the UK and Ireland through his extensive interviews and uses of social media. Linehan migrated from Dublin to London in 1990 and his own account of his development as a writer stresses his formation through the intersection of Irish, British and American influences. -
