The first of the IT2 Fundraising event took place last night at the RSL Club and if you weren’t there, you may get the feeling that you missed something special. As RSL Manager Terrance Grube stated, “I nawa seen so many sullen here!” (But don’t worry – you can get to the next one). The evening began with a fantastic video which introduced all of the contestants and compares to the eager audience. The video was projected onto a huge screen and acknowledged those who had been nominated then draw out of a hat to perform. The crowd was then welcomed by stunning IT2 organisers Karen Thompson and Tamson Mayo and also to the “Green Room” interview extraordinaire Nikki Kennedy. Tech wizard Mick Donohoe did a fantastic job at setting up a live video link from the main room to the performer’s room which allowed interviews with performers post performance. Judges Brent Adams (firm but fair), Tanya Delaney (the nice one) and Kim Friend (‘Grey’ Symmons) were also introduced and as the night unfolded provided feedback ranging from encouraging (that would be Tania) to constructive (that would be Brent) to what could only be described as expected, from Frenzy. Couple one was Brandt McRitchie (the super sub) and Leanne Schmitz who belted out some Billy Joel. The crowd thought they were terrific, but the judges accused Leanne of bribery after it was discovered that the Chicken Shop had half price chooks for votes. This team looked like they enjoyed the song and provided the ideal start to the night to the packed club. Eddie Miratana and George Douran were next up with “under the board walk.” Eddie was as smooth as ever and George definitely looked a million dollars. They sang very well and with the exception of a few timing bumps, did themselves proud. Trina Shepherd and Matt Bigg showed terrific stage presence and did a great job. Matt was complimented for his dancing from the Judge Friend. Matt then returned the compliment during the Green Room past score interview, much to the crowds delight. For some it is their first trip, others it is their second and third, or more. This time the group is from the greater Auckland area. Some have come through Arthritis Support Groups in New Zealand or are just friends who have been before. In the group we have Judy Painton (Camp mother), Ray and Thelma Nixon, Joan and Ray Baker, Cliff and Kath Bidwell, Ron and Joan Cavaney, Harry and Celia Harris, Colleen Drury and her mum Avis Sheehan. Highlights so far have been the Pitcairners 1856 show and dinner. The progressive dinner where we were welcomed in to the homes and families was great and the food was excellent. Eleven of us did the breakfast bush walk (not too hard for the oldies) and there is always a helping hand. What a breakfast - no need for lunch! Wonderland by Night was enjoyed by every one. Letters to the Editor - continued comments about the Norfolk Island Plan, which is Dear Sir, currently under review. Alan McNeil can be contacted I wish to clarify a number of issues raised in Mr on telephone 23595 or by email at planning@admin. Marc Fitzpatrick’s letter in The Norfolk Islander on 3 gov.nf. November regarding his proposed subdivision. Yours sincerely, Subdivisions fall into two main categories: those Rhonda Wheatley, Chief Executive Officer with and those without new road reserves. Where a subdivision creates portions of land where each portion has a frontage to an existing road reserve, and provided the subdivision satisfies the requirements of the Norfolk Island Plan, approval of the subdivision is not conditional on the provision of roads and utility

connections. However, if a subdivision requires a new road reserve (as was the case in Mr Fitzpatrick’s application) the developer must undertake all works necessary to develop that road reserve to an appropriate standard. This requirement ensures that the road meets appropriate standards and that the community is not faced with future maintenance or development costs for that road. Generally, properly serviced blocks can Orange Juice command a higher price than unserviced blocks, so the developer stands to recoup the cost of providing those Bulk Sales at $2.50 per Litre (bring in your own container) services. For a number of reasons, some subdivision applications have previously been subject to delays, caused by requests for more information or amendments to the original application. Each application is assessed against the Norfolk Island Plan and related controls and policies. Since April this year, the Planning Officer has progressed all subdivision applications outstanding since 2004 and 2005, with only one application from 2006 remaining to be finalised. The Tenth Legislative Assembly approved the Norfolk Island Plan as the document controlling development, land uses and subdivisions, and the Plan 5Litres cannot be changed to suit particular situations unless the person applies to amend the Plan. An amendment $12.00 2 Litres to the Plan requires approval of the Legislative $5.50 Assembly. The Norfolk Island Plan currently requires that each portion in a subdivision have satisfactory Tuesday 3rd & Thursday 5th October access and an acceptable level of servicing. Tuesday 26th & Thursday 28th September Sales between 8am and 2pm Members of the public and applicants are invited Sales between 8am and 2pm to discuss planning and development issues with cash salescash only salesTrade ly enquiries welcome the Planning Officer. This approach was used for sections 1, 2 and 3 with great effect. By the time we got to section 4, it was obvious a different technique was required as we were entering the area of the project that we call the “rain forest”. Here the microclimate is very different and if we simply proceeded to remove all of the noxious plants, a significant change would occur in that microclimate. Therefore we have used a technique of layering where we cut and stem inject the unwanted Community Update and Notice of Public plants and layer them on the ground. This acts as bulk Viewing Session mulch. Update It’s hard to believe that it is a year since we began the project. Fortunately we decided to start the project in the worst affected area. It was our original intention to mechanically remove most of the heavy infestation of noxious plants. However, very early on in the project, and after consultation with local advisors and the Envirofund managers a decision was taken in to instead manually remove the infestation and chip it back onto each area.

Most of the larger Olive trees have been retained, but stem injected (to slow down or stop the reproductive cycle). This approach does 2 things. The “thinning out” provides an opportunity for already established natives to flourish and the retained Olive trees provide shelter for newly planted natives without major disruption to the microclimate. Second only to shift workers, teenagers are the most sleep-deprived group in the world. Studies have shown that 90% of Australian Year 10 students aren’t getting enough sleep, and that 15 per cent build up such a substantial sleep debt that they can’t even work at school. As the academic year progresses, this can have a grave impact on their physical and mental well-being. Teenagers who get less sleep are more likely to be late for school, or absent; they fall asleep in school, and get poor grades.

Hormonal changes can make falling asleep more difficult. Conscientious, high achieving students who cram in lots of extra-curricular activities can be left energy-poor. Many teens consume “energy drinks”, but these can contribute to sleep problems and anxiety among young people.

Irritability, frustration, reduced concentration, poor motor co-ordination and a weakened immune system are just some of the effects of sleep deprivation. When teenagers don’t get the sleep they need for healthy functioning, it may cause poor performance at school and on the sporting field. Worse still, pimples seem to flourish in sleep-deprived skin And the effects of chronic under-sleeping don’t get any better as you get older. Too little sleep amongst adults is associated with an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity and accidents. If your adolescent is tired and grumpy on waking, or falls asleep in class or at the dinner table, he or she is probably sleep-deprived. Less obvious signs include increased irritability, memory lapses, decreased initiative, judgement and decision-making, poor attention span and motivation. Encourage daily quotas for computer, internet and phone use. Don’t allow TV in your teen’s bedroom: it reduces sleep quality and quantity. Develop a family routine of having one hour of screen-free and food-free time before bed. Unstructured family time together is good for relationships. Discourage stimulating drinks such as tea, coffee, coke, energy and sports drinks. Encourage a regular sleep schedule – going to sleep and getting up at about the same time each day Encourage a brief after-school nap (20-30 minutes if needed).

is an important part of sleep hygiene, since some research has shown that children in families with high stress levels are more likely to sleep poorly. Routines and rituals are powerful ways to help control stress. - this is a skill which will benefit your whole life.

The beneficial effects of exercise on sleep are well documented though it is not recommended just before bed-time. A swim, a bike ride or any preferred activity in the afternoon encourages a helpful level of weariness. Alcohol can make us drowsy but is a depressant that can seriously disrupt sleep, and is best avoided altogether by teenagers. A major change in sleeping patterns, along with other changes, can be a sign that an adolescent is suffering from worries that are best addressed sooner rather than later. Information comes from ‘teenmatters’ magazine, thanks to an article by Thea O’Connor and from “Surviving Adolescents” by Michael Carr-Gregg.

The Need For Hope In a world torn by war, famine, economic instability, family conflict, disease, and disaster, people need hope. When a person has hope, his life has meaning and purpose, and he can overcome incredible hardship. A brilliant psychiatrist and observer of human nature, Victor Frankl was a Jewish survivor of the German concentration camps. As a prisoner living for many months on the knife-edge between death and life, he witnessed time and again the essential human need for meaning. He noted that survival in the camps wasn’t as dependent on physical strength as it was on the possession of a deeply felt reason to live. He observed that prisoners usually died if they lost hope and had no purpose for carring on. What hope does our world have? For most modern people, hope can’t be separated from a dream for a new age. Humanity is facing so many crucial problems that only a radical break from the destructive ways of the past seems capable of offering solutions. Francis Schaeffer wrote, “People are hungry for something which will give them hope in life... they are also afraid. Things really do seem hopeless, even on the level of everyday life with its threats of a lower standard of living...of famine and ecological disaster, of devastating war. And they are looking for any answer”. People who do not put their hope in God have no alternative but despair as they think of the future for mankind on planet earth. Christianity reassures people that death is not merely the absurd ending of a meaningless life. The Christian faith promises everlasting life to those who believe in Jesus Christ. What is the reason for biblical hope? The Bible teaches that life in this world is worthwhile. Biblical optimism is founded on faith in a personal God who is in ultimate control of the universe and who gives meaning to history. G.N.

We had great weather for our first local rugby games. The first game was a good game with Ian’s Glorious White Knights taking on Ronny Nobbs Red Team. There were some good runs by Mal and Craig, a good intercept by Frank and Tim was the playmaker. The next game saw Gary’s Green team against Ronny’s Red Team. Pooh had an easy try, just too good for the reds, Jeff showed some great passes and Craney scored with no chase by the greens. Our last game was Gary’s Greens versing Ian’s White Knights. This was another good game, with a good run by Brandt, but Frank saved the day and stopped the try. Our Man of the Match Award went to Frank Stanton. Whinger of the Day went to Ian Anderson and our Encouragement Award went to Trent Christian. All in all everyone had a great afternoon and we look forward to making the next comp an even bigger, better, funnier day. On a more serious note, we are going to put in an order for more Creaky Ol Convict Ugly Jumpers soon. If anyone in the community would like to purchase one please call Raewyn Tarrant or Gary Dowling before 15th November. Cost $50 to members, $60 non-members.
