In the Penland wood studio, 2007.

“Since 1975, Doug has been to me the best friend and ally that anyone could wish for,” recalls fellow woodworker Stephen Proctor. “The house he shared with Kathie was a melt- ing pot of congeniality and warmth, and I am forever grateful for their hospitality. Doug was and always will be a magic part of the Penland aura.” “He was as patient with a beginner as with a skilled woodworker,” recounts his student Cathy Adelman. “He was the epitome of a generous teacher and an important part of my Penland experience. Not only that, but I’ve long felt that if I were ever in trouble east of the Mississippi, the first call I’d make would be to Doug. He was the most loyal, depend- able friend one could have. You could count on him no matter what.” Wood sculptor Sylvie Rosenthal describes Doug as a dear friend, mentor, and second father. “Early in my time working with and for Doug, we had a conversation about the dif- ference between a boss and a mentor,” she remembers. “A boss is someone you work for, a simple exchange. A mentor is someone who has the other’s best interest in mind, encour- ages them, and holds them accountable to their own dreams. Doug is a mentor in the tru- est sense; for those of us Doug mentored, his words and encouragement are with us.” Sylvie, like all of Doug’s friends, has many stories of projects and jokes with Doug that she holds dear. But it is perhaps these thoughts of hers that sum up so perfectly what made Doug such an exceptional teacher and example to all those lucky enough to know him: “Through his life, the way he worked and lived, Doug showed countless others that what you do is more than a job, that it is making a life. Doug was a dedicated friend and mentor who influenced and encouraged many. He took chances on projects and more importantly on people.” We are honored to name Doug Sigler Penland’s 2018 Outstanding Artist Educator. 11 12 FEATURED ARTWORK FEATURED ARTWORK FEATURED ARTWORK 13

Using the movement of the wood to lock the joints together and an ancient tradition as my guide, I play with ideas to create a new form that feels like it has been there forever.

I present this piece as an undiscovered object from the 1860s—as a piece commissioned by Cornelius Vanderbilt during the Golden Era. He had just returned from his grand tour of Asia and marveled at the use of bats as a symbol of good luck there. Fascinated by his Currier and Ives calendar depictions of scenes from the four seasons, he hired artisans to create a three-dimensional depiction of each, while including bats for luck. This piece was for a special place in the Biltmore mansion, above the fireplace in his library, and there it hung until sometime around the turn of the century it was taken down for cleaning and then was lost, seemingly forever. Last year, however, a young intern at the Biltmore was assigned to clean up one of the attics, and there, tucked away in a corner, was 8 Bats, 4 Seasons.

432 Laura Wood Blue Impulse, Pendant Brass, sterling silver, steel, powder coat, uvarovite, plastic cording Pendant: 41/2 x 4 x 2 inches Retail value: $800

My interest in body as site began with self-expression through dance and performative arts. The human form, as a result, offers continual inspiration in how I create jewelry. Though my work is sculptur- ally autonomous, it is intended to have a direct relationship to the body, as another dynamic canvas through which to facilitate tactile transformation while pushing the line into three dimensions. 104 SATURDAY Live Auction
