SEASON PREVIEW

Coach Joe McKeown and his staff expect the same thing at the beginning of every season – to win the conference championship and to make a run in the NCAA Tournament. There’s no reason to think in 2005-06 that the Colonials won’t. GW returns four starters and eight letterwinners from last year’s team that won 23 games and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to the talent the Colonials have coming back, McKeown made it his mission in recruiting this year to address the two main areas of weakness last season – lack of size in the frontcourt and lack of a consistent shooting presence from the outside. To do this, he brought in five freshmen, four of which are over six feet tall and the fifth is a sharp-shooting guard that will help stretch opposing defenses.

“Last year we had to change a little bit what we like to do,” McKeown said. “Hopefully this year, with our added size we can go back to being more of post-up, jump-shooting team, which has really been our bread and butter over the years.” Coach McKeown expects sophomore Sarah-Jo Lawrence to THE FRONTCOURT step up her game in 2005-06. 2004-05 SEASON REVIEW

The phrase “we don’t rebuild, we reload” gets thrown a lot in sports. But that’s exactly what the GW women’s basketball team did in 2003-04 – they reloaded. With the loss of the reigning 2004 Atlantic 10 Offensive and Defensive Players of Years in Cathy Joens and Ugo Oha, respectively, and the departures of A-10 Sixth Player of the Year Valerie Williams and point guard Marsheik Witherspoon, many people thought the Colonials would have a down year. All GW did was win a share of the regular-season conference title for the fifth time in the last six seasons, post 20-or-more victories for the 14th time in the last 15 years, and earned an NCAA Tournament berth for the 12th time in the last 16 years.

Things didn’t look good for the Colonials in their season opener, but showed the resiliently they would exude throughout the year. They fell behind District rival Georgetown by 16 points in the first half on Nov. 19, but outscored the Hoyas, 43-30, in the second frame to post a 67- 62 triumph. Jessica Simmonds spearheaded the comeback with a game-high 17 points in her first game as a Colonial after sitting out 2003-04 after transferring from Providence.
