PIONEERS TO HOST “NATIONAL GIRLS AND WOMEN IN PIONEERS OF THE SPORTS DAY” CELEBRATION JAN. 31 WEEK (Jan. 26) William Paterson University will celebrate “National Girls and Women in Sports Day” on Saturday, Jan. 31, with a series of free events off ered at the Recreation Center on campus.

A free basketball clinic for girls of all ages will be conducted from 9:45 – 10:45 a.m., followed by a discussion about Title IX and its impact on female athletes. Lunch will be served from 12:00 – 12:45 p.m., followed by the tip-off of William Paterson’s women’s basketball game against nationally-ranked Kean at 1:00 p.m. At halft ime of the contest, the Pioneers’ female student-athletes will be honored for their academic and athletic achievements during the last year.

Free T-shirts will be given to the fi rst 200 girls/women in att endance. Hartwell touched fi rst in both the 50 (26.68) and 100 (57.73) frees during a 120-118 win at Division II Queens College Jan. 21, and also was a part of the 400 medley relay team that turned in a winning time of 4:24.12. At The College of New Jersey Jan. 25, she was the Pioneers’ lone individual winner, fi nishing fi rst in the 50 (25.86) and 100 (56.81) frees. Hartwell also helped post a winning time of 1:57.57 in the 200 medley relay against the Lions.

William Paterson was again forced to foul, and TCNJ’s Frank fi nished the Pioneers’ comeback hopes with two free throws with less than two seconds left . Senior Courtney Nelson (Newark, N.J./Bloomfi eld Tech) tied for game-high scoring honors with his 19 points, while sopho- more guard Gabriel Paul (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) added 10 tallies. Lucas contributed six points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals for William Paterson. TCNJ made 19 of 26 (.731) free throws compared to William Paterson’s 10-for-13 (.769) eff ort. TCNJ took the 35-23 lead into the locker room as Klimowicz posted a double-double in the fi rst stanza of play with 16 points and 12 boards. WP pulled within one point, down 21-20 with 6:24 left , before the Lions went on a 7-0 run over the next minute. The Pioneers shot just 25.0 (9-36) percent from the fl oor during the fi rst stanza, and each team turned the ball over 13 times but TCNJ owned a 18-8 edge in points scored off the miscues. William Paterson bounced back to shoot 41.9 (13-31) percent during the second half and forced 13 Lion second-half turn- overs.
