Columbus County continues to see a positive economic impact from tourism, according to a study prepared by the U.S. Travel Association for Visit North Carolina. The economic impact of tourism in Columbus County in 2015 was nearly $52.5 million and represents a 2.8 percent increase from 2014, according to the report. Columbus County received about $1.43 million in local tax rev- enue from tourism, and the state collected more than $3 million in sales taxes in Columbus County from tourists, according to the data. Researchers estimate tourism saves each resident about $79 in taxes each year and generates more than $6.4 million in payroll in Columbus County. Tourism numbers reached an all-time high statewide in 2015, according to the report. The $21.96 billion in total spending repre- sented an increase of 3 percent from 2014. “All eight economic development regions of the state had spending growth of 2 percent or more, and 91 percent of the state’s counties saw direct tourism employment growth from 2014 to 2015,” said Wit Tuttell, executive director of Visit North Carolina. “Tourism continues to be a major driver of economic development across North Carolina, which is the sixth most-visited state in the country.” Jennifer Holcomb, president of the Columbus Chamber of Com- merce and Tourism, said local tourism businesses and organiza- tions’ dedication and hard work in developing and maintaining Staff photo by Grant Merritt quality products is a factor in the increase. “While we work hard Tammy Brooks rides the mechanical bull at Melody Campbell’s home on Saturday during an end-of-summer to promote our county and its assets, it’s the people who run the party for mental health and special needs clients sponsored by Carolinas Home Care Agencies. That is very positive.

LELAND - Three straight incomplete passes to the end zone put an end to hopes of victory in the final seconds of play Friday as the White- ville Wolfpack fell to the host North Brunswick Scorpions 21-20 in a season-opening high school football game. A severe weather alert was posted at half- time with Whiteville leading 14-7, which ended up delaying the game for more than 2-1/2 hours. Although no rain fell, there were reports of lightning in the surrounding area. It marked the third straight year that the opening game match-up between the two rivals had been al- tered by unfavorable weather conditions. The Wolfpack took the loss despite rolling up 305 yards of total offense while holding North Brunswick to a total of 193 yards. “I thought we did a good job of running the football and we did pretty well on defense, mainly in the first half,” said WHS head coach Luke Little. “It’s a tough loss, but hopefully the experience will help us as the season goes on.” Photos by Grant Merritt The Wolfpack scored on its first possession South Columbus sophomore running back Trequan Bellamy, makes a quick cut between East Bladen defender Tim Blanks (75) of the night with Bradley Pridgen capping a and Kyle Tatum (3) while en route to the end zone for his 10-yard game-winning touchdown run in the season football opener drive with a nine-yard run. While the ECHS defense showed some incon- sistency, it still came up with some big plays. Coach Maurice Huey said that while the loss was disappointing, there were some bright spots for the Gators, who gained only one win in their last two seasons. “Mistakes put us in a hole, but our team never gave up,” said Huey, who came to East Columbus after serving as an assistant at St. Pauls. “There is still a lot of football left to play and it’s our goal to get better and better each week.” East Columbus will have its next game Fri- day when it travels to play the Lakewood Leop- East Columbus back Kenji Bowen finds ards.
