The Record Producer As Nexus: Creative Inspiration, Technology and the Recording Industry
The Record Producer as Nexus: Creative Inspiration, Technology and the Recording Industry A submission presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Glamorgan/Prifysgol Morgannwg for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Michael John Gilmour Howlett April 2009 ii I certify that the work presented in this dissertation is my own, and has not been presented, or is currently submitted, in candidature for any degree at any other University: _____________________________________________________________ Michael Howlett iii The Record Producer as Nexus: Creative Inspiration, Technology and the Recording Industry Abstract What is a record producer? There is a degree of mystery and uncertainty about just what goes on behind the studio door. Some producers are seen as Svengali- like figures manipulating artists into mass consumer product. Producers are sometimes seen as mere technicians whose job is simply to set up a few microphones and press the record button. Close examination of the recording process will show how far this is from a complete picture. Artists are special—they come with an inspiration, and a talent, but also with a variety of complications, and in many ways a recording studio can seem the least likely place for creative expression and for an affective performance to happen. The task of the record producer is to engage with these artists and their songs and turn these potentials into form through the technology of the recording studio. The purpose of the exercise is to disseminate this fixed form to an imagined audience—generally in the hope that this audience will prove to be real. -

Record Executives Dream of Being: an Innovator, a Barrier Breaker and An
Blackwell’s mother’s family had settled in Jamaica in the 1700s after the Inquisition chased them out of Portugal. In Jamaica they began selling rum, cattle and sugar. Those were good businesses then and remained so for the next two hundred years. Chris was bom in London in 1937 to an Irish aristocrat, Middleton Joseph Blackwell. When Chris was six months old, he was brought to his mother’s family’s mansion in Jamaica to be raised. He was brought home. At age ten, Chris left Jamaica to be edu cated in England, feat he was already too free-spirited to slide into the British class system. left Harrow in 1955 and returned to Jamaica, where he worked at odd jobs while falling more and more deeply in love with music. In 1959 he started Island Records, Which at first mostly supplied Ja maican records, including early efforts by the fledgling Wailers, to Britain. Always curious and still a very young man, Blackwell also took a job as a second assistant to the director of the first James Bond movie, Dr. No, filmed in Jamaica. Offered a permanent job in the production company, Blackwell asked a fortune-teller what to do. She told him his destiny lay with music. Blackwell passed on 007. In 1964 he produced Millie Small’s “My CHRIS BLACKWELL IS w hat Boy Lollipop,” which sold six million copies around the world. Chris Blackwell was on his way. That same year, he recorded the Spencer record executives dream of Davis Group with Stevie Winwood. “Keep On Running,” “Gimme Some Lovin’ ” and being: an innovator, a barrier “I’m a Man” gave Blackwell big hits, an influx of cash and the start of a long, fruitful rela breaker and an international tionship with Winwood. -
Studio: an Introduction to the History and Culture of the Residential Recording Studio
The “Resort” Studio: An Introduction to the History and Culture of the Residential Recording Studio by Gabrielle Kielich A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, ON © 2015 Gabrielle Kielich Abstract Residential recording studios began to emerge in the 1960s. They were located in remote areas, featured onsite living accommodations, state-of-the-art technology, and recreational amenities. The “resort” studio conceptualizes the function and use of these studios as alternative workspaces. In this thesis, three case studies illuminate their development, ownership, and operation, and their intersection of work and living spaces in isolation. Resort studios were marked by diversity, but featured consistent design and working conditions. By combining the workplace and living space in relaxed atmospheres, resort studios blurred the distinction between work and leisure. However, their isolation from distractions created a concentrated creative work environment. The resort studio highlights music production as a social process beyond an industrial context, and draws attention to the confusion around musicians’ work as play. This thesis situates the resort studio within the continuum of studio configurations to contribute to a more complete version of studio history. ii Acknowledgements The past four years at Carleton have been among my most rewarding. My decision to return to university and change the direction of my career has brought with it transitions, challenges, excitement, and the support of many people. I would first like to thank my supervisor, Paul Théberge, for providing so much guidance on this project, from its very early days to full realization. -
Talking Heads from Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia
Talking Heads From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Background information Origin New York City, New York, United States Genres New wave · post-punk · art pop · funk rock · worldbeat Years active 1975–1991 Labels Sire/Warner Bros., EMI Associated acts Tom Tom Club, The Modern Lovers, Brian Eno Past members David Byrne Chris Frantz Tina Weymouth Jerry Harrison Talking Heads were an American rock band formed in 1975 in New York City and active until 1991. The band comprised David Byrne (lead vocals, guitar), Chris Frantz (drums), Tina Weymouth (bass) and Jerry Harrison (keyboards, guitar). Other musicians also regularly made appearances in concert and on the group's albums. The new wave style of Talking Heads combined elements of punk, art rock, funk, avant-garde, dance, pop, and world music with the neurotic, whimsical stage persona of frontman and songwriter David Byrne. The band made use of various performance and multimedia projects throughout its career. Critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine described Talking Heads as being "one of the most critically acclaimed bands of the '80s, while managing to earn several pop hits." In 2002, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Four of the band's albums appeared on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and three of their songs ("Psycho Killer", "Life During Wartime", and "Once in a Lifetime") were included among The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. Talking Heads were also included at #64 on VH1's list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time", placed among Rolling Stone 's similar list as well. -
