Carmel Rd for about 6.4 miles to Rt turn at blinking light onto Falls Rd. Take Falls Rd for about 1.5 miles to Rt onto Gunpowder Rd, then about 2.3 miles to 5-way stop. There will be numerous stream crossings, about 1,500 feet of climbing, some rocky sections of trail, and our pace while hiking will be 2.5 - 3 mph. – 2 – SATURDAY, JULY 12 – KIDS’ HIKE! – PATAPSCO VALLEY STATE PARK – HILLTOP WEST – 3M Hikers four years and older are welcome to join their parents, grandparents or other adults in beautiful PVSP. We’ll see Ilchester Tunnel, Blodes Dam, the Swinging Bridge, Ilchester Rock and other cool stuff on this easy three-miler. We’ll stop to discuss archaeological sites, industry on the river, the railroad, local flora and fauna, trail etiquette, maps, etc. The hikes are very doable for young hikers and can be adapted to the ability and interests of the group. Adults without kids are also welcome to join us for an easy/medium hike. – 7 – WEDNESDAY – SEPTEMBER 10 – SLEEPY CREEK SOUTH – 11H This is the fourth hike of a four part series covering the Tuscarora Trail as it traverses the Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area, just west of Martinsburg, West Virginia. This is a circular hike with 11 miles of distance and 1500 feet of climbing. We begin at the High Rock Parking Lot and follow the Old Historic Packhorse Trail (an old colonial road connecting Martinsburg and Romney) until it intersects with the Tuscarora Trail. We follow the Tuscarora Trail north climbing 1000 feet to the summit of Shocky Knob with a fine view to the west. Continuing north along the ridge we arrive at the Mini-Knife Edge Trail. This optional side trail involves crawling over the knife-edge and is not for the faint of heart or those afraid of heights, but there are splendid views of the Shenandoah Valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains await those who undertake the venture. After the short optional detour, we return to the Tuscarora Trail and continue following the ridge north until we reach Locks-of-the-Mountain Gap. At this point we leave the Tuscarora Trail and return to the High Rock Parking Lot via a side trail. There is the possibility for a post-hike dinner stop.
