In addition to its authority over banks and credit unions with assets over $10 billion, and their affiliates, the CFPB is the first federal agency with supervisory authority over certain nonbank financial companies. These nonbanks include mortgage lenders and servicers, payday lenders, and private student lenders of all sizes, as well as larger participants in the debt collection, consumer reporting, auto finance, student loan servicing, and international money transmission markets.
